During college, Cindy Crammer brought over two sets of breakfasts every day. One was for me, and the other was for my roommate and best friend, Mark Jefferson. The breakfast she brought me never changed. It was always just sandwiches and oatmeal. Mark's breakfast, on the other hand, always had a perfect balance of meat and vegetables, and she never repeated the same meal twice. Even for my birthday, the gifts she prepared came in two sets. My birthday gift was always four simple greeting cards. Mark got concert tickets, a handmade rhinestone photo mosaic, a custom-made suit, and a pinky ring. When it came time for our graduation trip, the three of us arrived at the train station together. Mark and Cindy scanned their documents and passed through without any trouble, but I was stopped outside. Cindy slapped her forehead in frustration and smiled at me apologetically. "I only remembered to book Mark's ticket. I forgot yours. "We've already made it through. I don't want to waste the money. I'll take you on a trip for two next time." Mark patted his chest and made a promise to me. "Don't worry, Jason. I'll take good care of Cindy for you." I watched their backs as they walked away side by side, laughing and chatting. I let out a bitter chuckle. I didn't want to keep lying to myself anymore. I turned around and bought a ticket home. "Dad, you said I had to get married right after graduation. I agree! "Remember the referral I made for an intern named Cindy? Cancel it!"

Chapter 1

On the way home, Cindy Crammer kept sending me messages to apologize.

[Jason, I really didn't do it on purpose.]

[It's just that when I was halfway through buying the tickets a few days ago, Mark got drunk and got into a fight outside.]

[If I hadn't gone to the police station to bail him out, he could've gotten into deep trouble. You would've blamed me for not helping him.]

I, Jason Gunther, recalled what happened a few days ago when I was talking to her on the phone in the dorm.

We were in the middle of a sweet conversation when the call suddenly disconnected.

I sent her countless messages, but she never replied.

A bad feeling rose in my chest. I didn't even bother putting on my shoes before hurrying to her dorm.

I scraped off a large patch of skin on my foot against a rock on the way there, but I still limped forward through the pain.

Despite being physically and mentally exhausted, I searched until dawn. In the end, I saw Cindy nervously supporting a completely drunk Mark Jefferson.

They walked right past me.

I could feel the cold wind through my clothes. It sent chills down my spine.

Later, Mark used the iodine solution Cindy had given him to clean my wound.

"Jason, Cindy was just afraid something would happen to me outside and that you'd worry.

"Honestly, she did it all because of you!"

Several times, I thought of asking him, 'Why did you call Cindy when you were drunk? Why did Cindy ignore me when you were in trouble?'

But I never asked.

Mark's message popped up right then.

[Didn't you tell me you wanted to marry her right after graduation?]

[I've been helping you test her out these past few days.]

[What do you think? Was my sacrifice great enough?]

I stared at those words. Every single one of them felt like a jab at my ego.

Just yesterday, I had seriously told him, "Mark, you and Cindy are the two most important people in my life.

"After graduating, I'm going to marry her. You have to be my best man!"

He stiffened visibly while sitting across from me. He then relaxed and smiled.

"Don't worry. I'll definitely be at the same wedding as you."

My eyes slowly filled with tears. The pain in my chest became unbearable.

I didn't reply to either of them privately. Instead, in our group chat, I typed out each word slowly.
