Chapter 1

Author: Flowers in Streams
I froze where I stood, unable to believe a word of it.

Matthew and I had known each other since childhood. After more than a decade together, everyone in the royal capital of Kingsport knew how much he cared for me.

To marry me, he had barely passed the two trials my father had set for him. Then, he petitioned outside the Shaw estate for three days and nights before my father finally agreed.

He had said he would never marry anyone but me.

Sabella Lane was also my closest friend. She had not been in Kingsport for long, but we were alike in temperament. It wasn't long before we shared everything with each other.

She knew Matthew was the only man in my heart. She had even once teased me by saying that if she were a man, she would fight Matthew for me.

The two of them even got jealous over who could invite me out that day.

To say they had been secretly involved with each other and that Matthew would torture me for fifty years because of her?

What a ridiculous joke!

I was about to argue with the old woman in the bronze mirror when the door to the bedchamber was suddenly shoved open from outside.

The candles shook hard and nearly went out.

My heart lurched as I hurriedly lowered the veil over my head again and grabbed the corners of my dress with both hands tightly.

My heart was pounding, and I felt both nervous and shy. However, my husband did not comfort me gently, nor did he hand me the wedding cup that symbolized eternal union to seal our marriage.

Instead, a large hand reached over and tore the veil from my head. The force was so great that it knocked my wedding hair ornaments away.

The wedding night I had imagined countless times was shattered in that instant.

I looked up in shock and saw Matthew, his face tight with fear and anxiety. A fine layer of sweat covered his forehead, and the eyes that had once held such tenderness for me now held only panic and urgency.

He did not even glance at the face I had carefully made up for him as he held my shoulders tightly. "Gwendolen! Sabella was abducted. I have to save her."

My mind buzzed as if I had just suffered a blow. The old woman's words from the mirror echoed in my ears again, one by one.

When Matthew saw my face go pale, he seemed to realize he had been too rough. His tone softened as he hurried to explain. "You and Sabella are closest friends. She means more to you than anyone. Of course, I can't stand by and do nothing."

After he said that, there was a glint in his eyes as he glanced at me with guilt.

The sight sent a chill down my spine, and I couldn't help but shiver. So… everything the old woman had said was true. All my questions and refusals died immediately.

I lowered my eyes, hid every emotion, then looked up again with a calm face. "Alright."

My voice was very soft, but he heard it clearly enough.

Matthew had thought I would cry, make a scene, or even try to stop him, so he had already prepared what he would say to soothe me. "I know tonight is our wedding night, but a life is at stake. You wouldn't feel at ease if we sent someone else to find her..."

Halfway through, he stopped and stared at me in disbelief. "What did you say? You agree?"

I nodded and pulled myself free of his hands, then I pushed him toward the door. "You're right. A life is at stake, and Sabella is my closest friend. No matter how you look at it, you should go and save her. Make haste. You must bring Sabella back safely. Take as many of the estate's guards as you need. The more people, the better. Go. Do not delay."

The more generous and understanding I acted, the more confused Matthew became. He stared at me for a long time. Only when I urged him again did he snap out of it. His need to save Sabella overcame every doubt.

He no longer hesitated and walked out of the room. "Gwendolen, wait for me."

One night, I looked into the bronze mirror again. This time, the old woman in the mirror spoke first. Her voice was no longer hoarse, and her eyes were clear with a gentle smile in them. "I listened to you and left that place. I used the little money I had left to open a small school, where I took in homeless children. Watching them read and write made my heart feel alive."I was sincerely happy for her. From then on, I began expanding my business beyond the royal capital. I traveled over mountains and rivers, saw smoke rising over the desert, and watched rain falling over the river towns in the damp south. My horizon grew wider with every landscape and scenery I had seen.Ten years passed in a flash.I was invited back to the royal capital to attend a royal banquet in the palace. During the banquet, the idle chatter of several noblewomen drifted into my ears."Have you heard? That marquess froze to death in the abandoned temple west of the city a few days ago.""Which marquess?

  • Future Reflections   Chapter 8

After running out of the dungeon, the first thing he did was go to the Shaw estate. He pounded on the estate gate every day, shouting Gwendolen's name until his voice went hoarse. I ignored it and merely made tea and read books in my personal courtyard.Gunter blocked him outside and stopped his harassment for me.At first, he simply kept Matthew outside the gates. Later, Matthew tried to force his way in. From beyond the walls of my courtyard, I would then hear the dull sounds of fists hitting flesh, along with Matthew's painful groans.Gunter would not hold back. Every time, Matthew had to be carried back by the servants of his estate. But the next day, he would appear on time again, and the cycle would repeat.I was very annoyed, but I was also too tired of him to pay any attention.Only half a month later did he finally stop coming, and I thought he had finally given up. But a servant came to report that Matthew had sold all the lands and properties under his household's name

  • Future Reflections   Chapter 7

The dream was over. When Sabella opened her eyes again, she was in a cold, damp dungeon. In front of her, Matthew sat in a chair and stared at her with a dark sneer.Sabella sat bound to the torture rack, her hair messy and her face terrified. "Matthew? Where is this? Why am I here?"When she saw Matthew, tears immediately welled in her eyes, and she put on that pitiful look again. Matthew's expression was hidden in shadow and hard to see clearly, but the pressure around him was terrifying. He did not answer. Instead, he simply clapped his hands coldly. Two guards dragged a bloodied man and threw him in front of Sabella. It was the bandit. He had been beaten beyond recognition and had only one breath left.Sabella's eyes narrowed, and all color drained from her face, but she still forced herself to stay calm. "Matthew, what... What's the meaning of this?"When the bandit saw Sabella, he struggled to raise his hand and point at her as if he had seen a lifeline."It was her…. I

I walked to the dressing table. The old woman in the mirror was still leaning against the bed, her eyes empty and lifeless. Perhaps my resolve surprised her too, because a faint glint seemed to appear in her clouded eyes.I did not ask her anything more.I already knew the truth. From now on, I would walk my own path and create my own future.I wrapped the bronze mirror in a cloth and placed it in the box I had prepared earlier. When I walked out of the estate's main entrance, I looked back one last time.Matthew was gripping the bandit's collar, his face dark as he questioned him.I smiled coldly as I climbed into the carriage and returned to the Shaw estate without looking back. The wheels rolled on, crushing everything from the past behind me.When I returned to the familiar estate, my parents were already waiting at the gate. When my mother saw the wound on my shoulder, she burst into tears. After comforting my parents, I returned to my courtyard alone. From a brocade box

  • Future Reflections   Chapter 5

I looked toward the voice and saw a tall figure standing at the courtyard's entrance. He stood straight with his back straight, surrounded by the air of a man long hardened on the battlefield. With one look, he silenced all the noise in the courtyard. It was my older brother, Gunter Shaw.He had rushed back overnight from the military camp a hundred miles away after receiving the letter I had sent last night.Matthew did not recognize him, however. Gunter had been tasked to reinforce the border for years and rarely returned to the royal capital, so Matthew had never met him. When Matthew saw me looking at Gunter, panic flashed in his eyes. It instantly turned into the ugly rage of humiliation. "So this is he, Gwendolen?! I was wondering where you got the courage to demand a divorce! It turns out you'd already found your next man on our wedding night!"He pointed at Gunter and cursed, "Where did this man come from?! How dare he barge into my estate? Men, break his legs!"Before h

  • Future Reflections   Chapter 4

A sharp pain in my shoulder blade woke me from my sleep. I opened my eyes, but there was no one beside me. Only the bronze mirror that connected to the future was safely placed beside my bed.The old woman in the mirror looked at my miserable state and chuckled twice. "Foolish child. Matthew ignored and tortured me for five decades, and I only learned the truth yesterday. Sabella never died. He kept her in another estate, hidden away as his mistress for fifty full years!"They lived happily together surrounded by children and grandchildren, while I lived with guilt and blame for hurting my closest friend. I spent my life with only a rosary and prayer books for company, alone and miserable."I listened quietly to her accusation. Every word was soaked in blood. However, my heart no longer stirred. "The one hundred thousand silver coins you gathered for him became the wealth he used to support Sabella."And back then, it wasn't that he failed to bring back the frost rose during his tr
