I stood before the cabin mirror, far from the fading clamor of the party on the upper deck. The ivory satin gown still fell perfectly, my makeup remained nearly flawless. Yet there was something powder and lipstick could not hide: the look in my own eyes—those of a woman carrying too many stories behind a single silhouette of a smile.

A soft knock on the door drew my attention. “Ana, may I come in?” It was Mama’s voice—gentle, but always breaking through the thickest walls.

I opened the door. She was there with a light shawl over her shoulders.

“Not going back to the party?” she asked. I shook my head. “I just needed a moment to breathe.”

She stepped inside and sat on a small chair by the porthole.

“If I didn’t know you from the days you played with dolls, I might truly believe you’re a girl in love,” she said.

I allowed myself a faint smile. “You’re the only person on earth who knows who I really am.”

Mama was silent for a long moment, then spoke softly. “Are you certain Hugo truly d

We made landfall, but not gracefully. We were dragged in like a bit of plastic tossed about by the surf.“I can’t feel my waist,” I muttered.“I can’t feel my dignity,” Hugo replied. We lay on the sand, faces to the sky. Then a wave snatched the raft and pulled it back into the sea.“THE FRYING PAN!” Hugo yelped, leaping up like a hero.“Forget it,” I said, shaking my head. “The sea owns it now. What you should worry about is the raft. We have no idea where we are.”“You don’t understand. That pan was sacred.”“Let the ocean sanctify it.”We ended up sitting on a rock, silent, staring at the water. Hugo hugged his knees; I rested my head on his shoulder.“Is this our honeymoon?”“If it is, it’s the ‘emotional-expansion’ edition.”We both laughed. Tired, half-mad, yet oddly content. Honestly, this was more exhausting than trudging after Hugo to that lodge when our car broke down in the snow.We were still perched there when a strange sound came from the bushes.Click! The unmistakable

Fifty“How am I supposed to... clean it?”I took a deep breath. Of course. I should’ve known a young master like him had probably never done this sort of thing in his life.“Move. Let me handle it.”From the gear drawer, I found a small folding knife. Apparently part of the frying kit. With steady, practiced movements, I began to clean the fish on the wooden board Hugo had just used as a makeshift surface. He could only watch, mouth slightly open in awe, as if witnessing a woman cook for the first time in his life."You're amazing.""I'm starving.""Same here."At the back of the boat, Hugo managed to set up a small portable stove from the emergency kit. The gas was almost gone, but just enough to fry something.I placed the fish slices onto the pan, its surface now hot. The smell of fresh fish filled the air, carried gently by the sea breeze. No salt, no butter, no seasoning at all. We were counting on the natural saltiness of a creature born and raised in the ocean. Hopefully, that

"So what now? Are we going to live here and become modern fishermen?""Do you want me to catch fish with my bare hands?" Hugo asked, glancing into the water like he was genuinely considering it."No. I want you to call the boat rental and ask for a rescue before I actually bite you," I muttered, hugging my knees as I stared out at the endless sea, now far too vast and... quiet. The sea breeze teased the ends of my hair while our small boat bobbed gently, drifting along the slow current. Oddly enough, amid my irritation, I felt like the main character in some classic novel, stranded at sea with an unreliable man who, despite everything, was still ridiculously charming."I tried calling," Hugo finally said, raising his phone. "But it seems the signal has gone swimming with the dolphins."I hissed under my breath, looking at my own screen. No Signal."Perfect. Like a horror movie, but with an unreasonably beautiful backdrop," I grumbled, staring up at the flawless blue sky."Are we going

Hugo’s catch saved me not only from an ungainly tumble but also from losing the last scraps of dignity I still clung to after the bikini fiasco.“You really must be more careful, Mrs Cassilas,” he whispered, his still-wet chest pressed far too close for my heart’s comfort.I eased him away, lungs working overtime, though not from shock so much as from the steady assault my husband launched on every line of defense I had left.A few minutes later, freshly changed and sipping chilled watermelon juice, Hugo handed me a small flyer.“I have a romantic idea for this afternoon,” he declared, cross-legged on the bed in a white T-shirt and loose linen pants that made him look like a yoga prince. I narrowed my eyes, wary.“You know, your last ‘romantic idea’ ended with water in my ears and a bikini nearly swept away.”“This one is guaranteed to be more elegant,” he said, bright with enthusiasm. “We’ll cycle through the old village—apparently it’s full of aesthetic photo spots.”My curiosity st

I turned slowly, taking in his half-drenched face, the lashes clumped by water. Inwardly I cursed the effortless beauty apparently reserved for creatures like him.“What do you mean you lost? You were the one who jumped in first!” I snapped.“A noble sacrifice,” Hugo said, hand to chest in melodramatic fashion. “I knew you couldn’t resist the lure of this pool for long, so I surrendered for love.”I rolled my eyes. “What sappy romance did you study this morning?”He chuckled and pivoted me to face him. “Since I lost, I get a kiss, right?”“Isn’t it the other way around? The loser gives the kiss.”He pretended to ponder, then nodded. “Very well… I’ll give you a kiss.”Before I could dodge or slap him. Hugo brushed a quick, soft kiss on the tip of my nose. Far too sweet to refuse.“That’s a violation,” I muttered, narrowing my eyes.“A violation?” He gave me a sly, strategic smile. “Where exactly were you hoping I’d kiss you?”I jabbed toward his stomach, but before my fingers reached h

That morning, I woke not to an alarm—but to someone, or rather a someone, staring at me from too close a distance. “Hello,” Hugo whispered. I nearly hit him with a pillow—fortunately, I remembered we were in a luxurious villa on our honeymoon. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I croaked. “I’m just making sure you’re real,” he said, brushing my hair—still somewhat messy. “Not a dream from eating too many oysters last night.” “And your verdict?” “You’re real,” he replied, smiling. “And your hair… it’s spectacular. Like modern abstract art.” I nudged his face gently. “Never say that in public.” “Alright. But… you’re still captivating,” he whispered, and kissed the tip of my nose before I could dash to the bathroom. An hour later, we stood on the villa’s balcony. I wore a casual dress and straw hat, while Hugo wore a white linen shirt and shorts. It should have been the perfect honeymoon vista. But of course it wasn’t—because Hugo pulled me to the poolside just as a server a
