DAMIEN’S POV

“Please, Don. I swear I did not betray you.”

Marco's voice shakes so badly that every word seems to scrape its way out of his throat, but I keep the gun resting loosely against my thigh while I study the man kneeling on the concrete floor of my casino.

Blood has dried beneath his nose, one eye is already swelling shut, and his expensive shirt is ruined from where my men questioned him. He keeps looking at the gun as though staring at it long enough might convince me to put it away. It won't.

“You sold my shipment route,” I say, my eyes steady on him.

“I didn't. I swear to you.” His voice trembles.

“You sold my shipment route, Marco.”

“Don... I was forced to do it.”

“By whom?”

His mouth opens, but nothing comes out. I lean back in my chair and watch the hesitation settle between us.

That is the thing about lying to me. Most people think the lie is the dangerous part, but it isn't. The dangerous part is after I ask a question and they need too much time to answer it.

“I had debts,” he finally says through sobs. “They threatened my family.”

“You should have come to me.”

“I was afraid. I was an idiot. I am sorry.”

“No.” I scoffed. “You should have been more afraid of the men you betrayed.”

His face crumples.

“Please, Don. I have two children. You know I have two children. I can pay you back. I can give you names, money, whatever you want.”

“You already gave them something more valuable than money.”

He stares at me, his face pale. I lean forward, my voice low but firm. “My route.”

His eyes trembles, fear seeping in.“I…I can fix it.”

“You can't fix this one.” I stand, and Marco immediately begins shaking his head.

“Please, Don. Boss, I am sorry.”

I raise the gun to his head.

“Don, please!!”

I pull the trigger. The shot cracks through the room, and Marco's body drops heavily onto the floor.

Warm blood spatters my cheek. For a moment, I simply stare at him, then one of my men steps forward and holds out a folded white cloth.

I wipe the blood from my face and glance toward the body. “Get him out.”

Two men move immediately. Another reaches for the door, but before he can touch it, a burst of gunfire erupts from somewhere above us.

The walls tremble. Someone screams, then another shot tears through the ceiling. I look toward the stairs.

“What the hell is happening?”

“Don, we're under attack.”

I take the gun from the table instinctively.

“Then stop standing here and kill them.”

I walk upstairs as the casino erupts around me. Chairs scrape across marble, glass shatters beneath running feet, and the music that had been blaring a few minutes ago suddenly cuts off in the middle of the song while armed men flood through the eastern entrance.

My security team returns fire. One attacker steps through the smoke with his weapon raised, and I shoot him before he gets a chance to aim.

Another man comes from behind him, and I put a bullet through his shoulder before finishing him with a second shot. The third sees me and runs. I follow him through the service corridor.

He reaches the back exit before I catch him, and I grab the back of his jacket hard enough to slam him against the wall.

“Who sent you?” My voice thunders.

He laughs through blood. “You think killing me changes anything?”

“Not really.” I press the barrel beneath his jaw. “It just means I have one less person to ask.”

His smile disappears. “They know where you're going next.”

I watch his face carefully. He is telling the truth, that means someone inside my organization sold us out.

I pull the trigger. His body slides down the wall, I step over him and walk outside.

My driver brings the car around.

“Go!”

The engine roars as the car shoots forward, the tires screeching against the road. We tear through the city, with two black SUVs appearing behind us less than a minute later.

“They're gaining on us,” my driver says.

“Keep your eyes on the road. Don't lose your focus.”

A bullet punches through the rear window. Glass sprays across the seats, and my driver curses as he swerves around a taxi.

I check the magazine in my gun. I should be thinking about the leak, I should be thinking about which one of my men is going to disappear before sunrise.

Instead, I am thinking about the fact that someone has managed to drive me out of my own casino. I click my tongue, the thought irritating me.

“Take the next left,” I say, adjusting my jacket.

“There are too many people on that road.”

“Left, now.”

He turns.

I see the flower shop ahead, warm lights spilling through the windows, and a woman moving somewhere inside. Perfect.

I open the door before the car stops. I move fast, keeping my head low as I barge into the shop, the bell above the flower shop ringing when I push through it.

I don't look at the woman at first. She is standing near the back, half-hidden beneath a row of hanging plants, and the light doesn't reach her face clearly enough for me to see who she is.

That is exactly what I need. I cross the shop quickly, and she turns toward me.

“Can I help you?” Her voice is sharp and urgent.

I catch her wrist before she can finish. She gasps, eye trembling in fear, she tries to pull away.

“Shh,” I say, pressing a finger against my lips. “Don't scream.”

MARA'S POVI wake to the sound of the heart monitor beside my mother's bed. For a few seconds, I lie still, staring at the ceiling while I try to remember where I am. My neck aches from sleeping in the chair, and there is a dull pressure behind my eyes that tells me I must have been asleep for hours. Then I turn my head.Mum is lying beneath the white hospital sheets, an oxygen tube beneath her nose and wires running from her chest to the monitor beside her.The memory of last night comes rushing back.I sit up quickly, and the room tilts for a second. I grip the arm of the chair until everything settles, then lean toward the bed.“Mum?”Her eyelids move. I reach for her hand instinctively, my eyes widening with fear.“Can you hear me?”Her eyes open slowly, and when she looks at me, I see how tired she is.“Mara.”Her voice is so weak that I almost don't hear it.“Don't talk,” I whisper, rubbing my thumb over the back of her hand. “Please, just rest.”She closes her eyes again.I sit

  • GODFATHER'S ANTIDOTE    CHAPTER 7: She's A Puzzle I Can't Solve.

DAMIAN'S POVI watch Mara disappear through the front doors. She doesn't look back, not once, and that bothers me more than it should.A few minutes ago, she was standing against a wall with my hand around her waist, trying so hard to convince me she didn't want me that I could almost hear the lie in her breathing. Now she is gone, and I find myself staring at the empty doorway like an idiot. I don't like that. I have never been the man who waits for a woman to leave and wonders where she's going.Women usually make that part easy. They come to me.They flirt, they touch, they offer themselves before I've decided whether I want them. I have had beautiful women in every city I have visited, women who knew exactly who I was and wanted the danger that came with my name.None of them stayed in my thoughts after they walked away, but somehow, Mara does. She has managed to create a space in my mind for years without even knowing it. I noticed her long before she ever knew my name.I remembe

  • GODFATHER'S ANTIDOTE    CHAPTER 6: Falling For The Wrong Guy.

MARA'S POVDamian moves toward the door. I grab the back of his jacket and yank him away before his hand reaches the handle.“What the fuck is your problem?” I whisper, keeping my voice low even though every nerve in my body is screaming. “Do you want us to get caught?”He turns slowly, that irritating smile is sitting perfectly in his face. “Wait, Us?”“Yes, us.”He looks down at the hand clutching his jacket, then back at my face. “Take me away from the equation, baby.”“How do you mean?” I ask.“You're the only one who sees a mess here.”He steps closer. “All I see is an opportunity.”My stomach twists. “What opportunity?”His eyes gleam with pure mischief. “Let him know his bestie has his older brother's hands all over her.”My mouth falls open. “You are crazy.”He grins, “Yea, I've been told.”“How did I end up with a sick freak like you?”He laughs quietly. Another knock lands against the door, louder this time, it sends shock to my spine.“Mara? Are you good? Why so quiet?” Adr

  • GODFATHER'S ANTIDOTE    CHAPTER 5: A Thorn In My Flesh

MARA'S POV“I'm sorry, Mrs. Vescari, but could I use the bathroom?”Isabella smiles immediately. “Of course, darling. Upstairs, second door on the left. You can take your time.”“Thank you, ma'am.”I push my chair back, trying very hard not to look toward the staircase where Damian disappeared a few minutes ago.But I catch myself glancing up. He is nowhere around. That's good. I turn away before Adrian notices me staring towards the staircase. “I'll be right back,” I whisper into Adrian's ear.He smiles and nods. “Take your time.”I make it halfway up the stairs before I finally breathe properly. What the hell is wrong with me?I reach the bathroom and close the door behind me, then lean against it with both palms pressed flat against the cool wood.My reflection stares back at me from the enormous mirror. My cheeks are still warm from the drama. “This is ridiculous.”I turn on the tap and splash cold water over my face, I stare at myself. The man I've spent years quietly loving is

  • GODFATHER'S ANTIDOTE    CHAPTER 4: BUMPED

MARA'S POV I wake with a sharp breath and stare at the ceiling while the last pieces of the dream disappear, but his face is still there. That stupid, arrogant face with those dark eyes and those lips that had no business feeling that good against mine. I squeeze my eyes shut. “Mara, you are a total mess.” My voice sounds ridiculous in the quiet bedroom. I turn onto my side and pull the blanket over my head as if I can hide from my own thoughts. It doesn't work. I remember the way he grabbed me, the warmth of his body against mine, and the way his voice dropped when he told me he needed my help. I remember being terrified, then confused, and then—his lips. God. Why am I still thinking about his lips? I have been kissed before, okay, just once back in college during a dare game, but atleast i know what a kiss feels like. So why does this one keep replaying in my head like someone has pressed a button and forgotten to turn it off? I sit up and rub both hands over my fac

  • GODFATHER'S ANTIDOTE    CHAPTER 3: BUTTERFLY

DAMIEN'S POV“What are you doing?” Her voice trembles slightly.“I need your help.”I back her against the wall and place one hand beside her head. Her breathing turns uneven beneath my presence.“There are men outside looking for me, and if they come through that door, I need you to pretend I'm supposed to be here.”“What the hell?” She struggles to pull free. “You're hurting me.”I loosen my hand immediately. “Listen, I won't hurt you.”She snaps, “You just dragged me across my shop and pinned me to a wall. What am I supposed to think?”“Yeah, I know.”“Then let me go.”“I will, as soon as they're gone.”Footsteps sound outside. Her eyes dart toward the door, and I hear the vehicles stopping outside. They're close.I pull off my jacket and throw it onto a nearby chair, then loosen my tie and toss that after it. The jacket carries my name without needing a word spoken.I whisper, “Stay calm. Act the part of my girlfriend for five minutes. If they see you frightened of me, they'll com
