The glass door slid shut behind Ethan as he stepped into Tom's lawn. Thin sprinklers scattered lazily across the grass sent arcs of water glistening in the late afternoon sunlight, and the air held a faint smell of wet grass and mud. Somewhere over one of the fences, a dog barked once before settling into a low growl. Behind them, Tom's house thudded with the low pulse of bass-heavy metal music. It wasn't loud enough to be distracting, but its low boom rattled the walls and shook the wooden porch beneath them. Actually… the place was quieter than Ethan expected. “Your home’s silent today," Ethan said to Tom as he swung his bag from his shoulder and dropped it to the floor. "Frank isn't in?” “He is," Tom answered with a sigh. “I guess he's just sleeping." Ethan nodded. That explained the low music. Leaning forward, Tom placed his arm on the table and ran it across the surface, sweeping off the rain-plastered leaves to the floor. He was about to drop his books when Ethan called him. “Hey, wait." Tom paused before turning to Ethan, his brows creased. "Yeah?” “I just-you…” Ethan stuttered, his grip tightening around the strap of his backpack crumpled at his side. “I wanted to know if your sister’s in." Tom blinked, his brows arching. "My sis?” he repeated, his book dropping to the table with a low thud. “Well.. she is in. Why are you asking though?” Ethan bit down on his lips, his gaze dropping to the floor. His thoughts traveled back to what his brother had said to him. And the chill that ran down his spine when he nearly sniffed his secret out. Highschool was ending in a few months and he wasn't ready to be tagged as the ‘gay kid’. That could do a lot to his messed up reputation. He needed to ask Chloe out. “Well, I was wondering if she'd be going to the dance," he said, lifting his gaze to meet Tom's. "I thought maybe we could—” “Ethan," Tom cut in sharply, his gaze narrowing. "Uh… yeah?” Tom's head tilted slightly. “Are you trying to fuck my sister?" Ethan's eyes widened as he took a large step back. "Yo, hell, no,” he said quickly, shaking his head. "I'm not trying fuck Chloe. I just… I need someone to go to the dance with so that my brother won't see…" He swallowed his words, running a hand through his hair. “Just… never mind,” he said instead, picking his bag up again. “Let's just get to work." Tom let out a snort first, then slowly descended into a loud cackle as he held his sides. Ethan, now confused than ever, just stood there staring with a frown on his face. "What the hell are you laughing at?” he asked, already settling on one of the seats behind the table. “Did I say anything funny? You think I can't get your sister?" That shut Tom up immediately. “First of… no, you don't have any fucking game,” he began, dropping down on the seat opposite Ethan. “Secondly, I was only laughing ‘cause I was messing with you. My sister’s leaving town today to celebrate her boyfriends birthday.” “Oh," Ethan mumbled, slowly nodding. "Of-fucking-course, she has a boyfriend.” “Oh, cheer up." Tom stretched, slapping Ethan's shoulder gently. "I heard you were paired up with Roseanne yesterday. You could ask her out." Ethan scoffed. “I'd rather die." The quick statement tore a single laugh out of Tom and Ethan chuckled too. But he knew that wasn't the truth. If it really came down to it, just so he could avoid his brother's brashness, he'd do the unthinkable. He'd ask Roseanne out. That's if she wasn't dating Blake already… The mere thought of his name sent a jolt down Ethan's spine as his thoughts traveling back to the stare he had given him back in class. That knowing look that seemed to only draw Ethan closer— “Man, are you having a hard-on thinking about my sis?" Tom's voice instantly pulled Ethan back to the present. He looked up to see his best friend staring down at his trousers from under glass table. His eyes dropped down to his crotch where his dick prodded the zipper, begging to be seen. "Shit,” he cursed under his breath as he pushed down on his hard-on. "Look it's… it's not… she's not the reason… let's just get to work, please." Ton stared at Ethan for a second too long, his brows furrowed and eyes narrowed. “Sure," he muttered, turning his book open. “Let's get to work." Ethan crossed his legs, chewing against the side of his mouth as he fixed his gaze on the open notebook in front of him. He tapped his pencil lightly against the page, forcing the image of Blake into the creases of his thoughts as he tried concentrating on the words dancing in front of him. Tom’s eyes remained on Ethan until he got bored and returned back to his own books. The tension soon eased away and everything returned to normalcy as both boys began solving delved into their works. For a long moment, there was silence—broken only by the thud of Frank’s music and the dog barking over the fence. Then Ethan spoke, absentmindedly. “Okay,” Ethan muttered, adjusting his glasses. “If the reaction rate doubles when the temperature increases by ten degrees, then the catalyst—” BEEP. The sharp sound caused Ethan to look up. He found Tom looking down at his smartwatch, trying to turn off an alarm. “What's it for?" he asked, leaning back against his seat. “The alarm, I mean." Tom glanced up at Ethan briefly before snapping his book shut. Without a word, he stacked all three together and stood up. Ethan blinked, watching as he brushed dried leaves off his jeans and stretches his arms. “What are you doing?" he asked, his brows furrowing. “Why are you standing up?" “I'm going to meet a… friend,” Tom said, shrugging casually. "No big deal.” Ethan cocked his head slowly, his eyes narrowing. "A friend?” he repeated as a slow smirk tugged at his lips. "Well, I never knew you even had any.” Tom rolled his eyes and snorted at the remark. “Ha ha. Very funny.” "So…” Ethan mumbled, fiddling with his fingers. "You're going over to your… friend's place to study then." “Yeah," Tom answered simply, already tucking his books under his arm. "Sorry you have to do it alone.” Ethan kept his smile as he swallowed the lump forming in his throat. "No big deal," he said after a sharp exhale. “Make sure to send my greetings to whoever they are.” Tom nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. “Will do." Ethan saluted in response before returning his attention back to his textbooks. Tom turned toward the sidewalk and was already halfway across the lawn when he paused. His frame drooped lightly as he let out a sigh. Then slowly, he turned back toward Ethan. "Um… yeah,” he said, scratching his head with his free hand. "So… Blake actually invited me to his place to… help him... with his assignment."THE COMMISSIONER'S REVENGECommissioner Daniel Hayes stood at the big window of his office and watched the police station below him. The day was late and the sun was already setting behind the building. Officers walked along the parking lot, talking in small groups. It all seemed quite normal to Hayes.Except, it wasn't. Not for the first time in his life, someone had put Hayes into an awkward position, where he was unable to do anything to help his department. And this someone was Sheriff Marcus Reed.Hayes turned away from the window and went straight to his desk. The thin brown folder sat on it. Hayes watched the folder for a few moments and took it off. The folder contained pictures. One picture was of the drug store. Another was of the elderly owner. Third one was of Jake Sanders and Aaron Thompson.Hayes looked at it for a few seconds. "Two bastards," he muttered and threw the picture on the desk. The surveillance video had provided more than enough proof. The faces were clearl
RUN AS FAST AS YOU CANMorris drove like a desperate man. Tires squealed as he spun the cruiser into the next turn, missing a delivery truck and speeding down the empty street."Ethan, Jesus!""Dude.""Do you want me to not worry when you're driving like a madman?""Yeah.""You're not making me feel better!"Blake looked through the rear window. Three SUVs were following them. "They're catching up!""I know.""How are they following us if they're three streets behind?""Because they don't want that memory card reaching the commissioner.""You really are working for Hawthorne, then?""He's the one who sent me after you.""So why didn't he come himself?""Because he can't.""Why?"Morris' expression grew darker. "Because someone from the department is watching him."Silence fell into the car. "Then he is trapped too?""Not exactly. He's investigating the sheriff. But he needs evidence."Thomas held up the memory card. "So he sent you because he needs this.""Exactly."Horn honked behind
NO PLACE TO HIDEEthan had never run that fast in his life. It was hurting his lungs and legs, but he kept running, even though his body screamed for him to stop. From behind, there were steps hitting the pavement."Faster!" Thomas shouted."I'M TRYING!"Blake caught Ethan by the arm and pulled him around the corner as another gunshot rang out. BANG! Ethan jumped. "Jesus!""Keep moving!" Blake shouted. They were running between the two old buildings, stepping on the puddles forming in cracks of the pavement. Gina was following them close behind. "Where are we going?" she shouted.Thomas looked behind him. "I don't know!""You brought us here!""I KNOW!"Another shot rang out behind them. Thomas instantly ducked. "Fuck!"They reached the end of the alleyway and stopped there. There was a chain-link fence blocking their path. Ethan stared at it. "You've got to be kidding me."Gina turned around. Steps were getting louder behind them. "They are catching up with us."Blake climbed on the
THE OLD TRAIN STATIONIt seemed like a place not worth being at after midnight. Cracked road and broken streetlamps led to the abandoned station, which was completely engulfed by rusted railroad tracks going into the darkness. The vegetation swallowed the pavement around the station.Gina carefully drove her car near the abandoned station."This place is creepy," Blake muttered.Ethan glanced through the window. "Can't disagree with you on that."Gina parked in the parking area and switched off the engine. The sudden silence sounded heavier than the car noise. Nobody moved for some time. Then Gina turned to her friends. "None of us leave the car alone."Blake nodded. Ethan took out his mobile. 11:31. The message was delivered. They were here."Hello?" Ethan shouted through the window. His voice got lost in the darkness. Nobody answered.Blake directed his gaze toward the abandoned building. "Maybe whoever sent these messages is not here."All of a sudden some metallic noise echoed ins
BEFORE MIDNIGHTNeither of them moved for several seconds. The message was still on Ethan's phone.YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.Underneath it was another message.AFTER THAT, THE COMMISSIONER GETS EVERYTHING.Blake looked slowly at Ethan. "What exactly do they have?""I don't know.""You said you believe they have the whole video.""I said I believe."Gina walked towards them and held out her hand. "Let me see." Ethan gave her the phone. She read both messages twice and handed the phone back. "Whoever that person is, he doesn't want to see Aaron and Jake arrested."Blake frowned. "Then what does he want?"Leverage. Gina glanced at the window. "He wants something from them."Ethan couldn't think fast enough. "What could they possibly want?"Gina remained silent. But then Blake's expression changed. "The drugs."Ethan looked at him. "What?""Aaron's drugs." Blake stepped forward. "If somebody stole them, maybe this is the reason why this has all happened."Ethan recalled Jake's words. They
THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERAThomas' eyes never left the screen in front of him. For a few seconds, he couldn't breathe. It was a grainy video captured by some camera. There was a hooded person standing under the flickering light outside the drugstore. And on his neck was hanging the silver chain — that same chain that he wore almost every day during the last two years."That's..." the officer next to Commissioner Hawthorne started."Yes, I know." Hawthorne leaned over closer to the screen. The image wasn't clear — the face of the person was barely recognizable beneath his hood, and from this angle he couldn't be sure who it was. But the chain was clear. And he recognized it. Just not on Thomas. On somebody else."Play the footage one more time."The officer hesitated. "But sir, we've already viewed it three times.""Well, view it the fourth time."The images started rolling backwards. There was the drugstore. There was Aaron and Jake entering it through the rear. Several minutes pass
THE TASTE OF REGRETThe house carried the strong smell of beer–one that Ethan knew too well. It mixed with the faint scent of cigarette smoke clinging to the couch cushions and curtains, welcoming him as he opened the door. Coughing, he pushed through the ash cloud as he prayed his brother was alr
KISS ME LIKE YOU HATE MECoach Daniels' sharp whistle rang out, echoing across the empty court. The sound of squeaking shoes and quickened breath filled the space as everyone huddled at a corner. “Alright, y’all pair up,” Coach Daniels shouted in a thick southern accent, as he grabbed a basketball
THE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET 2The name hit Ethan like a brick and he found himself choking on his own breath. His head snapped up instantly to Tom standing a few feet away. “…Huh?” was all that slipped past his lips as his eyes widened. Tom just shrugged again like it was nothing. "He met me after
LEFTOVERSThe class buzzed with almost instantly. The moment Dr. Keller said they should pick their partners, the sound of chairs scraping across the floor echoed across the room as students began turning toward “Calm down," Dr. Keller shouted over the noise, slamming his palm against the desk. “G
