He held a manila file in one hand and wore the same smug expression he had before the scandal broke. His face was the same but his bigger stature made her rake his body with her angry stare.

"You’re back and the first thing you did was to annoy me with some petty things?" she said, her voice flat as she walked back to her seat.

"Is that disappointment I hear? It looked like you didn’t want me back."

"It's apathy. You should try it sometime and see how good it feels."

He chuckled. "You haven’t changed; you are still quick with the barbs. I thought a relationship would have softened you."

Her jaw tightened. "Don’t talk about me like you know me."

"Touchy." He took a few steps closer. "I thought I’d leave you a little peace offering. Clearly, your taste hasn’t matured. What a waste; someone else would have been interested."

"Clearly, you still think gestures erase damage."

Ryan leaned on the partition wall of her cubicle. "I'm trying, Cassie. I am trying to make amends. You don’t have to

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Closer to the People

The morning started with the smell of fried pastries drifting up from the street market below our hotel. I stood at my window for a moment, watching vendors set up their stalls while the town slowly woke up. Their pots were clanging, voices rising and falling in easy conversation, and the air was filled with the sweetness of fried dough and ripe fruit.Nicholas was already waiting in the lobby when I came down, sleeves rolled up, tie loose. There was a coffee in his hand and another sitting on the low table beside him.“You timed it perfectly,” he said, handing it over. “Strong enough to wake the dead.”“Perfect,” I replied, taking a grateful sip. “Because you have about twenty minutes before I start behaving like a zombie.”He smirked, watching me over the rim of his cup. “I’ve seen you at your worst. Zombie’s still better than cranky Cassie.”I arched a brow. “Oh really? And who exactly is brave enough to stick around for cranky Cassie?”He gave a slow, deliberate glance around the

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   With You

I hadn’t realized how badly I needed to breathe until the train pulled out of the capital. The office, my mother’s watchful eyes, and the invisible office politics that always seemed to hover over me, all of it shrank away in the window’s reflection.Nicholas sat across from me in the first-class cabin, his laptop open but untouched. He was watching the scenery blur by as if the next three days were already unfolding in his head. It was a glance at first but I decided to look at him, feeding my soul with all of his face with my hands under my chin for a long time for support.“You’ve been smiling since we left the station,” he said without looking at me.“Have I?” I tilted my head, feigning innocence, my head turning to the window with a swift jerk.He smirked. “It’s… suspicious.”“Suspicious or contagious? You are smiling too.” I countered. His eyes finally met mine, warm but assessing all my moods and gestures. “We’ll see.”The trip to the Midwestern region took four hours by rail,

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Mission

Nicholas and Cassie arrived at the Governor’s office about two hours later after getting Victoria’s call, stepping into the air-conditioned cool of the reception area. Cassie had opted for a pale blue blouse and black slacks, which was professional but soft enough to keep her from looking like she was trying too hard. Nicholas, in his usual fitted suit, looked as composed as ever, though she caught the way his hand brushed lightly against hers as they followed the aide toward the Governor’s office. She spent Friday night with him because her mother traveled for a meeting and they had a nice time catching up on the cuddles and snuggles they have missed due to work and other things that happened with Chloe. She spent most of those weeks trying to help her put evidence together for Dr. Weller.Victoria was already seated opposite the Governor, her expression as strong and firm as a marble statue. She offered Cassie a brief nod that could mean “good to see you or don’t embarrass me”; it w

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Buzz

Monday mornings in the Governor’s office had a rhythm of their own; everyone kept moving like the hum of a well-tuned machine that knew exactly when to speed up and when to stall. Staff trickled in with travel mugs of coffee, laptops tucked under their arms, and that mix of weekend nostalgia and weekday urgency in their eyes.It was the sign for a busy Monday morning. The open-plan workspace buzzed quietly. Aides moved between cubicles, carrying files and murmuring about policy updates that were just published, while a junior assistant fumbled with the printer in the corner. Someone had left a half-eaten muffin near the reception desk, its wrapper crumpled like an afterthought. In the conference prep room, Victoria Montgomery stood reviewing a thick folder that was brought in by one of her assistants. Her black tailored dress fit perfectly, and the subtle gold brooch at her collar caught the morning light. She looked like someone who’d never allowed jet lag to win a battle in her life

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Safe Place

Cassie knocked lightly on Nicholas’s office door before slipping inside. He looked up from his laptop, his expression softening the moment he saw her.“You heard about his resumption?” she asked, leaning against the frame.“That Ryan’s back?” Nicholas closed the lid of his laptop. “Yes. HR told me about his resumption yesterday and he just left my office not quite long ago.”Cassie stepped in and shut the door. “It’s… weird. The whole office feels different, like there’s an invisible camera following me around. I just feel kind of unsettled.”Nicholas’s eyes darkened. “He said something to you? Just today that he resumed?”She shook her head. “Not exactly but he left a cupcake on my desk with a note. I tossed it in the bin, and of course, he had to walk in right then, seeing me do it.”“Cassie…”“I didn’t let him get to me,” she said quickly. “But still, just seeing him here, walking around like nothing happened… it’s exhausting.”Nicholas came around the desk, resting his hip against
