Chloe and Mia called to show me the view of the countryside. Soon enough, I forgot the scene with my uncle and got immersed in their talks when my phone chimed with a new email. The moment I opened it, excitement shot through me.

“Guys, my internship placement just came in!” I squealed.

“No way! Where did you get posted to?” Chloe asked eagerly.

I scanned the email quickly. “It says I'm assigned to the Aurora Corpor..” My breath caught in my throat. “… isn't that the huge ass marketing company?”

Mia gasped. “That's a major company! You're so lucky!”

We ended up shifting the discussion to our internship placements before we disconnected the call. I couldn't keep my excitement to myself and rushed to inform my mom, who only smiled and congratulated me.

“I know you will do well. Welcome to the real world temporarily,” she commented, giving me a high five.

“Take this fruits to your uncle, he’s in his room. You both can eat that while you catch up with him.” She shoved a tray in my hands and started packing for work.

Did she just send me to the lion’s den? How was I put up with the tension between us?

I entered his room to see him packing his bag at the edge of the room. He definitely didn’t expect me in his room.

“Mom told me to bring you some fruits,” I slid the tray on the table.

I leaned back in the chair right in front of him, stretching just enough for my t-shirt to ride up my thigh slightly. I caught his gaze flickering down before he masked it with indifference.

“Guess I'll finally have the house all to myself again,” I began. “Not that I minded your presence, Uncle.”

His eyes raked my bare legs slightly, but he kept his face neutral. “Don't go around behaving like this with other men, Cassie.”

I let out a short laugh. “And why not? You don't get to control me.”

He tilted his head, a smirk tugging at his lips as he approached me. His face was just a few inches apart from mine as his tall frame towered over me where I was. My heart, which I thought was hardened, began to beat against its ribcage uncontrollably.

“I love disobedient and stubborn ladies. They're the most fun to break because I can fuck them into submission.”

I swallowed hard, my body betraying me at his words. I hated how easily he could make me feel this way.

“You think I’m one of them?” I chuckled lightly, trying to mask my feelings

His hand slowly stroke my face, causing me to gulp down a thick wad of spit. It reminded me of the sinful night, all details vividly playing in my head.

“Take care of your fears first. You are trying too hard to hide them.”

His words stung me. I didn't say another word and just jumped up, turned on my heels, and stormed out of the room. His words were echoing heavily in my head, and the reaction was damning; my panties were soaked already. I needed a distraction badly.

***

I couldn’t get the encounters with my uncle off my head. Ever since he left, his scent and memories were everywhere. The sitting room smelled like him, anytime I open the fridge, it felt like he would pin me on the counter like the other night.

“You need to get this off your head,”

I kept repeating to myself and immersed myself in other activities, just to close that chapter of my life and move on.

The following week, Alex pulled up in front of the massive building to drop me off like my mom instructed. I tendered my internship letter, and it was confirmed immediately by the HR. My acceptance letter was printed, and I signed it before the HR boss also signed it. She signaled for one of the employees to direct me to my new office.

She led me to the elevator leading to the top floor of the building as I looked around.

“Lucia”

Immediately, I returned the pleasantries and responded with “I’m Cassie.”

She took me person in charge of the office we got to and introduced me as the new intern that was posted to her floor.

“I see you are assigned here. The office of the CEO's secretary is currently vacant. With your educational background, you should be able to fit in perfectly. Liz will fill you in what it takes and your desk is right beside the CEO's. I trust you to handle the job well,” the boss explained with a thin smile.

“You can follow me,” the person who I suspected to be Liz motioned to me and led me to the other side of the office.

“Your seat is here, right in front of the CEO’s office and you can go through the manuals on the table. It contains your work schedule and tips on the CEO’s preferences. Once you can follow them, he’s not hard to serve.”

I listened with rapt attention and engraved all she had said in my brain. I settled in my seat after the necessary steps had been taken, and it occurred to me that I hadn't introduced myself to the CEO.

With my straightened navy blue skirt, I headed to the door and pushed it open. I walked into the CEO's office to see him buried in work at the end of the room.

His cologne filled my nose, calling back a certain memory I didn’t want to remember but life is full of coincidences so I never imagined Nicholas being my boss.

The CEO sat behind the massive desk, casually flipping through a file as I walked to the front of his table.

“Good morning, sir.” At that moment, his sharp eyes looked up to meet mine. My legs froze and my body turned ice-cold, but he wasn't shaken.

His lips curled into a slow smirk.

“Surprise? Sweetheart.”

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Attack

Work was just there for me. My mouth was shut throughout most of the day because I had nothing to discuss with anyone. I tried to make myself invisible and remove myself from every gossip since I had a new focus.Getting back from work tired, I just dropped my bag on the sofa and dragged my feet to the kitchen. I was halfway through reheating the leftover pasta when the banging started. it was not a polite knock and not even the impatient kind. This was angry, heavy, the kind that rattled the frame of my rented apartment door. My stomach turned cold at the sudden interruption, fear washing over me but it felt familiar.I knew that rhythm; it was something I got used to as I grew up.I walked to the door slowly, my grip tightening around the spoon in my hand, as if that would protect me.“Zara! Open the damn door!”My father’s voice that was slurred, rough, and louder than the hallway deserved, rang through the frame of the door.I swallowed hard. “What do you want?” I called through t

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   The Norms

The meeting room was colder than usual, the hum of the AC penetrating through the low murmur of our voices. The oval table was crowded with laptops, folders, coffee cups, and the restless energy of several interns who knew Cassie ran these sessions like a drill sergeant with perfect hair ever since she became the manager.Cassie stood at the head of the table, scrolling through her tablet, her blazer fitted like it had been made just for her, her hair pulled back in a way that made her look like she’d stepped out of a magazine spread on corporate efficiency. She didn’t need to raise her voice to get attention; she just had it. That’s who she was. She was the intern manager, which meant every one of us was here to submit our weekly progress reports for her review.I sat three seats from the end, my folder balanced on my lap. Across from me, Ryan lounged back like the chair was an afterthought, tapping his pen in a lazy rhythm. It wasn’t the work that made me uneasy; it was the fact tha

    |Zara|Steam curled lazily from my mug, the faint scent of chamomile wrapping itself around me like a soft blanket. I’d dropped my bag by the couch the second I got in, kicked off my shoes, and switched on the lamp in the corner, the one with the amber light that made everything look softer than it really was.The lamp has been my friend for days because I feel better with the light coming from it once it’s on. It’s like a therapeutic glow for my dark world. The day at the office had been quite tolerable. That was more than I could have said a month ago. People still glanced at me the way you do when you’re not sure if someone’s contagious with bad luck, but at least they weren’t whispering anymore like the first week I got back from my suspension. My desk was the same, my tasks the same, but inside of me, there was a difference. Even though it was small, it was still there.I curled my legs beneath me, pulling the throw blanket over my knees, and opened my journal. The pen hovered

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Don't Stop

We moved slowly, but with an urgency that wasn’t about rushing. It was about not wasting a single second and enjoying it thoroughly. I slid my hands beneath the hem of his T-shirt, feeling the warm planes of his back, the way the muscles shifted under my touch. When I pushed the fabric higher, he caught the hint, pulling it over his head and tossing it aside before settling back over me.Every brush of skin against skin felt like fire meeting water. It was sharp, then soft, leaving behind a hum that curled low in my stomach. His lips wandered from mine to the curve of my jaw, down to the hollow of my throat, lingering there until my fingers tangled in his hair.“I’ve wanted this,” he murmured against my skin, his voice rough, “since the night we left for this trip. Every time you looked at me, every time we laughed… I wanted to close the gap and just have you wrapped in my arms.”“Then don’t stop now,” I whispered, spreading further for him.His hands cupped my breasts, slowly smoochi

Later, as we walked back to the hotel, the air was warm against my skin, with the faint sound of music drifting from somewhere down the street. His hand found mine quickly, naturally, and I didn’t pull away; I locked it in the more.“Feels like we won’t get this kind of time anymore,” he said after a while.“We might not,” I agreed, glancing up at him. “Which is why I’m trying to memorize every second.”He squeezed my hand, and in that small, quiet gesture, I felt his heart connecting with mine. The one that tells you that even if the world outside sees you one way, the truth between you is deeper, harder to hide, and impossible to undo.At the door to my room, I hesitated before leaving his fingers. “Thank you,” I said softly.“For what?”“For making this trip feel like… more than work.”He didn’t reply immediately, just studied me like he was deciding whether to say what was on his mind. In the end, he only said, “Sleep well, Cassie.” As he kissed the back of my hand and wavedI clo

  • GUILTY DEVOTION   Nostalgia

By noon, my notebook was a mess of ink and half-legible scribbles, the pages smudged where my pen had raced to keep up. My wrist ached in that satisfying way it did when the day was worth documenting because they all had a lot to say.We stopped for a quick roadside lunch. The restaurant served us a plate of soft, doughy rolls still warm in the center and cold mango juice served in cloudy plastic cups. I leaned back on the bench, letting the shade from the corrugated tin roof cool my skin.Nicholas caught me staring at the horizon. The fields stretched endlessly under the sun, rippling like gold where the light hit just right.“You like it here. I can feel it and see it in your eyes,” he said.“I do,” I admitted, glancing at him. “It’s… slower and real. It feels like a world I really want to live in.”His mouth quirked in a faint smile. “This is dangerous.”I raised a brow. “Dangerous how?”“You might decide not to come back,” he teased, tearing a roll in half and handing me the piece
