Carysse’s cheeks went red at his words.
Stupid body.
“Here is the plan. But first, ever heard of Gairoshi?”
Ashki squinted his brows. Carysse tilted her head slightly in curiosity.
“Perhaps you could begin on the history of Gairoshi, my child.”
“I will answer that later, Elder Shimar. I want to clarify what Gairoshi is to…them.”
Carysse knew why he hesitated. He was about to say ‘my friends.’
“Gairoshi is a phrase from the old language of Apharoth. It means grit for glory,” explained Chaos.
A strong wind blew outside the tent and some of the cold breeze got in. Carysse knew she felt the icy air but also felt it from her insides. It was like Gairoshi was a bad omen.
“It is an ancient practice much like the gladiators in the arenas found in the outskirts of this nation. It even almost has the same rules where representatives from each tribe gather to duel, making their way to the top until one only remains. In Gairoshi, it's slightly different. Anyone can join. Everyone, whether you are a peasant or a prince, has a chance to win the prize.”
“The crown,” Elder Shimar continued. Carysse didn’t get it at first. ‘What crown?’ she thought. And then it dawned upon her.
Chaos looked at the elder but he nodded and Carysse became all the more shocked, the meaning of Gairoshi sinking in.
“I see. So it is a selection. On who will be the next king,” Ashki concluded.
Chaos nodded with satisfaction, happy that Ashki was a fast one.
“I don’t blame you if you don’t know. You were busy surviving after all,” Chaos said and looked at both Ashki and Carysse.
Yeah, and we wouldn’t have been in such a tight position if you were with us.
“I’ll just have you know, my children, this Gairoshi that you are talking about–its last practice was during my grandfather’s time and it was banned for many decades due to its brutal nature. Killing during the dueling is not allowed. However, that rule doesn’t cover when you are outside the arena.” Elder Shimar’s voice quivered a little but immediately smiled to erase the fact that he shuddered at a memory. “Please continue, my child.”
“The revival of Gairoshi was something that shook the whole world. King Visian declared Gairoshi a year ago. It was in exchange for the ceasefire here at Thalisse.”
“What?” Carysse could not help but react.
“You must have noticed yourself. Why has no soldier found you here when they were such a large army that attacked two years ago. This is why you can now rest easy because no one is coming to find you. Even Saizen Lifir, the prince that attacked us, is not here. Everyone is busy preparing for the Gairoshi which will happen in a month.”
The wood cackled softly as all of them took in all the information. It was suddenly too much for just one night. Carysse had the urge to get the tea beside her so she grabbed it and drank all of it in one gulp. When she set the cup on the floor, Chaos was looking at the rug on the floor with his fists clenched. He had this seriousness that meant he was about to say something deep.
“Carysse and Ashki.” There was a heavy tone in his voice. “Will you travel with me to Apharothia and fight with me at the Gairoshi?”
Carysse almost coughed the tea out of her body. She had not expected that.
“Y-you are participating?”
Chaos flashed her an irritated look as if offended by her question.
“Should I not?”
“That’s not what I meant. This Gairoshi–what’s in it for you?”
He gave her a long look before answering. “As Elder Shimar had said, the sole winner of the Gairoshi will be the next king. And when you’re king, you can do whatever you want.”
“Say it, my child. Be honest.”
“I…as funny as this might sound,” Chaos looked away for a bit, already feeling the embarrassment of what he was about to say.
“If I win, I will drive any presence of Saizen Lifir’s influence which he had been building for the past two years. You will no longer live in this secluded area with little pasture and limited resources. You will no longer hide out of fear of the colonizing soldiers. For the victims of the attack for two years, I’m tempted to say that I will revive them but that’s impossible yet I have not forgotten them. I still remember all their names. Giving an inheritance to the families left behind is what I can do best. I will then multiply the size of the original land of Thalisse, till it, build houses, and leave all its territory and resources in your hands. I’m going to restore Thalisse, my own homeland.”
It was for the first time in history did Carysse hear such words come out from his mouth. The Chaos she knew was not interested in such things. He was just a random cold guy with the lean body and experience of a young warrior who excelled in combat but skipped writing and reading classes from the other teachers. He was an anti-social who only wanted to team up with Ashki or her sometimes and never gave a second look to the others. To think that the Chaos now wanted to accomplish such a noble feat, it was like she was seeing another Chaos. What had happened to him for the past two years that he was missing?
“So? What’s your full plan then? What do you have in mind for us?” It was not surprising that Ashki was into this immediately. He was always the enthusiastic one.
“Even I need companions, you know. In Gairoshi, if the contestant happened to be in an accident, anyone from his household or team can continue.” Chaos was relaxed now. From where he was squatting, he lifted one of his legs where he placed his bandaged hand to rest.
“Ashki, I know your strength. Truth be told, you are more qualified than me to enter. That is why I need to have you at our back. Though I already said that it’s on me to fulfill my wish, if ever I get my ass kicked or killed, then it’s still a sure win if you will continue in my stead.”
He spoke of his death like normal. The sudden uneasiness made Carysse admit that she didn’t like what he said no matter how much she hated him.
“And as you have been told, playing dirty outside the arena is common in Gairoshi and there are no rules that prohibit it. We need one more person who will act as our guard and a lookout. There is a reason why the best team is always composed of three.” Chaos looked at her.
“It’s unfair how you boys always get to be in the spotlight,” Carysse snorted after realizing her part.
“Then we can switch roles if you want,” Chaos blatantly said.
“Hmph,” she just said but did not raise an issue. Though she was not belittling a support’s role, especially in Chaos’ plan, she was just used to being at the frontlines for the past two years.
“You said that Gairoshi will already happen in a month and the place where it will be held will be at Apharothia, the center city. When will we travel?”
It was Elder Shimar who replied in a sad voice.
“Now.” The Elder folded his right leg, his strong leg, as if to stand up. “Get your necessary things, my children. You leave this very hour.”
Elder Shimar was the only one who moved, Carysse catching the old man by the shoulders because he suddenly attempted to stand without any support.Carysse snatched his wooden cane from the ground and helped him regain his posture. “Elder Shimar? What’s with the hurry?” asked Chaos.Chaos was not the only one to notice the different tone in the Elder’s voice. Ashki’s head turned to the direction of the entrance of the tent. “Don’t tell me,” he said as he stood and went near it, his ear pressed upon the thick cloth acting as the tent’s door.“Ashki?” Carysse asked with a hint of fear.Ashki looked at the Elder and both of them seemed to have a mutual talk with their eyes.''I am so sorry, Chaos, my child,'' Elder Shimar said with a low voice. ''It seems like you won't have the time to visit the children tomorrow even though I assured you earlier and even volunteered to accompany you..''Chaos clenched his right fist but then released it as he slowly stood up. ''I see,'' was his only r
If they had left one minute later, Bal would have caught up with them.''Bal?'' Chaos asked as they ran the trail. They had knocked the two guards unconscious earlier at the village entrance. Bal had taken all the guards and even their weapons for his bravery show. That was careless of him. What could have happened if the real enemy suddenly showed up? Would the two incompetent and drunk guards be able to defend the village? Would Bal make up for it?Earlier, when Carysse heard the sound of weapons clinking and the footsteps together, she could only think of one man that could gather such a force. It would be impossible for a normal child to discern such noises but they were warriors of Thalisse. They trained with nature ever since they could hold weapons. This already happened before when he wasn't in favor of Elder Shimar's rules and she couldn't believe he was actually doing it again. She was late to perceive it though. No wonder Elder Shimar and Ashki noticed it first. A renowned
Carysse almost cried as she bandaged Ashki's left arm. Good thing it wasn't his battle arm but it still hurt to see her friend wounded badly. Ashki was the first to be attacked when he scouted for them. He said that they came out of nowhere, the same as how Carysse felt it earlier. ''I don't know but.. it felt like they were waiting for us,'' Ashki said. True enough, the mountain was filled with different routes and trails. Why were they on the specific road that the three of them took? Their attacks were also intentional, intended to kill them. They weren’t holding back. Ashki’s words made the atmosphere colder than what the night should be. Carysse saw Chaos clench his fists near the entrance, his eyes hidden. ''Chaos, do you have any idea who they are? You always distance yourself if you know something.'' Carysse didn't mean to be harsh but if this was part of Chaos' plan, she was not falling for it. ''Then you have to relax yourself. You also tend to pinpoint your fingers w
As soon as Ashki jumped, Chaos grabbed Carysse by the waist again and carried her out of the cave, plummeting to a ravine. They were not hybrids unlike in the age of Elder Shimar where everyone practiced ancient magic. But what they lacked in magic, they made up for their trained bodies. They were pure humans but leaping to dark chasms weren’t really that new to them. It was one of their regular physical exams when they were still trainees. Still, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t scary.Carysse shut her eyes as she felt trees wheeze past through them and gravity pulled them to the ground but Chaos did a good job of holding her tight.By luck, for the second time, they fell on water, and that was a thousand times better than crashing on earthen ground. This time, the river was a little warmer and wider that they had to swim. Chaos helped her up. She was surprised she still had her bag. Chaos also has his lightsword strapped tightly at his back. It made her think of Ashki already and she supp
They were jumping from one branch to another, making Carysse hope that they could actually go over the boundary without any Mahan at their tails. She had lost count of how many minutes they were already running peacefully. If that was the case, then Ashki bought them enough time. A wave of guilt washed over her mind knowing that they left behind a friend just for them to be able to move forward. No, we will see each other again.Ashki said it himself. No one was going to die tonight, only the Mahan. He was not a weakling. He was the best of them three. Carysse filled her thoughts with positivity. She had to stay focused on her own goal.Chaos was in front of her, leading the way. As his back was facing her, she couldn't help but see the similarity two years ago when she was chasing him, trying to make him come back. They pressed on, passing through trees, until they were almost past the boundary. After that, the moon was covered by clouds, and the shadows came.Carysse didn't know if
The old fort was gloomy than ever. Once upon a time, it was a stronghold for the kings of Apharoth whenever their main camp in the flatlands was wiped out. The place served as their last resort, hence the name, Bezelius or Last Bronze in ancient Apharoth language. It had walls that soared fifty feet high. Plus, it stood on top of a hill and so the four towers touched the clouds during the wet season. It was one of the reasons why it was abandoned. During the seven years of the Great Cold, it was rendered useless because it froze its own soldiers. Shrouded in fog, heavy clouds, and continuous rain, the country began to slowly forget Bezelius that once acted as a shield of the people but of course, people always forget. Only the shadows stay. Now, it was a perfect hideout for the Mahan people.“It’s been three days,” a bearded man wrapped in a thick purple scarf started. He sat cross-legged on the small plain throne “Why haven’t the assassins returned?”“Maybe they encountered something
At the palace, another war was being fought, not by mere weapons but sharp words that were far more dangerous than swords.Visian Vahamor, the king of Apharoth, garbed in velvet and gold clothes, was doing his best not to explode in anger because of the dispute before him. His right and left chancellors were at it again. They seem to have forgotten that they were in the presence of His Majesty.Chancellor Dasran, the king's only sure friend, was already red in restrained anger. The king wanted to take a break from this spat because they had already been debating for more than two hours and no one one was backing down.''Chancellor Dasran, do you really think, with all your experience as an aide to the royal throne for almost twenty years, that reviving an old tradition is an effective way to stop a war?'' A brown-bearded man with a calm expression asked Dasran. He was Waharis, the Left Chancellor, and his subtle tone even with all their bickering meant that he came here prepared.''It
They had detected her. Of course, they would. Carysse was not from here so it was inevitable that the city guards posted on almost every visible rooftop would notice. The singing drunk men sang of the mighty Apharothia at the ship last night. They mentioned the city with flying gold swords. Carysse thought that it was just a play of their tipsy state. The sentries at the entrance weren’t strict as they let anyone enter. But now that she was walking the first street, she could see why Apharothia was called the center city and why they were worthy of being the host for Gairoshi. Their guards weren’t on the ground. They were stationed above. Clothed in red and gold armor, they were like magicians with swords or arrows. She saw one of them nudge his pair's elbows and his partner nodded to the others, as if giving a signal. Looks like it was true that Apharoth was not lenient to its security. Carysse walked faster, her wooden sandals pounding the pavement louder than she intended. The a
