Elder Shimar was the only one who moved, Carysse catching the old man by the shoulders because he suddenly attempted to stand without any support.
Carysse snatched his wooden cane from the ground and helped him regain his posture.
“Elder Shimar? What’s with the hurry?” asked Chaos.
Chaos was not the only one to notice the different tone in the Elder’s voice. Ashki’s head turned to the direction of the entrance of the tent. “Don’t tell me,” he said as he stood and went near it, his ear pressed upon the thick cloth acting as the tent’s door.
“Ashki?” Carysse asked with a hint of fear.
Ashki looked at the Elder and both of them seemed to have a mutual talk with their eyes.
''I am so sorry, Chaos, my child,'' Elder Shimar said with a low voice. ''It seems like you won't have the time to visit the children tomorrow even though I assured you earlier and even volunteered to accompany you..''
Chaos clenched his right fist but then released it as he slowly stood up.
''I see,'' was his only reply, his eyes showing sadness but when he caught Carysse looking at him, he brought back his straight face with no emotions.
The Elder let go of Carysse's hold on him and walked towards a wooden chest sitting in the corner.
''Carysse, my child, be vigilant. Always. The reason why I'm telling you to leave right now is because I smell predators marching right up to this tent.''
He opened it and snatched three small stuffed bags made of snakeskin. It was their supplies specifically stored for the assigned scouts or hunters who would be expected to be out for a night or two.
''Elder Shimar, it's not yet the season for the wolves in the forest to--''
Carysse stopped when she heard it herself.
Her heartbeat spiked.
''No...''
Ashki grabbed her by her elbow, his small but deadly ax already in his other hand.
''Let's go, Carysse.''
''But our other things,'' she said.
''This should be enough,'' Chaos said as he took hold of the bags. ''Don't worry about your other necessities. I have everything prepared at Apharothia.''
''You heard him. Now go, my children. I can't accompany you with my weak legs. I will stall them here. They can't harm me anyway.''
The three looked at Elder Shimar leaning on his cane. Stories said that he was the best warrior of his time and he was the only one to live to such a ripe age. There was nothing they could give but reverence to the old man.
''Mark my words, Elder Shimar. You will see Thalisse restored with your own eyes,'' Chaos boldly said.
''Aye, I will make sure that I will not die yet. Neither are you allowed to, until you fulfill your promise.''
The Elder walked to the entrance and held it open with his shivering hands.
''Run along, my children. And don't look back.''

Never had Bal the Big Man been so irritated in his life.
After the incident earlier this afternoon with the entrance of Chaos, the youngling who deserted the village two years ago, he was so pissed off with how the rules were broken.
Any outsider that hinted of the location of their hideout should be killed immediately.
The village agreed. Everyone swore that they would never compromise their location even if their heads were about to be cut off.
Many heads rolled for the past two years. It seemed inhumane but if it was for the survival of Thalisse, even Elder Shimar approved of it. They threw to the river the bodies of any unaware soldier that attempted to pass through their territory.
Some of the villagers even got caught outside by the roaming soldiers while hunting for food or just scouting but they chose to die by the sword rather than expose the secrets of the whereabouts of their sanctuary.
And now that someone actually had the guts to write them a letter and leave it at the entrance of their hideout, that was way beyond more than being knowledgeable of their whereabouts. Someone knew of the exact location.
That was why Bal was so infuriated when Carysse, the girl who was taking orders from the Elder, brought the rascal into the village. And to his anger, that scarred boy named Ashki actually approved of it.
Of course he had his doubts so he kept an eagle eye on Carysse. And then, Chaos' face was revealed.
No wonder the sender of the letter knew the entrance to the hideout.
He couldn't blame the Elder for taking him in immediately. That was how he was--a soft old man who was overjoyed at the return of an adopted son whom he had brought up. Bal would understand if that son of his stayed by his side as a proper kid would do but when they needed Chaos the most, he left them without any word and without clear reason.
But it just didn't sit right with him.
Why would a deserter suddenly appear after two years?
It was not impossible to think that he came back as a spy. Another thing that justified his doubts was the leaked story of what he did to Carysse two years ago.
Carysse was chasing him to the boundary, they said. And then he did the unthinkable--something considered grave to Thalisse where they treat each other as family even when not related by blood. The girl only tried to stop Chaos from leaving and the boy tried to kill her.
No matter how much he hated the younger generation, he still could remember he actually pitied the girl when they brought her back to the village, bloody, pale, and was on death's door.
And her bringing him back to the village safe and sound after two years was the dumbest thing Bal had ever seen. If he were the girl, he would have sliced him the first moment without any hesitation.
Which was why he led twenty full grown men equipped with spears and swords towards the tent of Elder Shimar.
They were walking through the forest that led to the tent, hidden with the help of the night. The original plan was to move earlier at dinner but he didn't want the women and children involved and so they had to wait until everyone was sound asleep.
He never underestimated the three younglings. He knew of their potential and even more for the Elder. As a retired veteran of war, Elder Shimar was still sensitive to his surroundings.
That was why they chose midnight as their meeting time but to their bad luck, it was the full moon. They would be easily seen and so they had to move along with the help of the shadows.
One of his men informed him that the candles were not yet out at the Elder's tent. Meaning, they were still awake.
They had to move before morning. Bal was not raising a revolution. He only wanted to express his dissatisfaction with the presence of Chaos in the village without any disciplinary actions imposed on him. The women were scared of Chaos and they had every reason on why they should be.
He had to do this for the sake of Thalisse. He may be sent to the caves that served as their makeshift dungeons as punishment but he will be glad to go if he will be imprisoned along with Chaos.
Now as they were walking towards the tent, one of his men was running towards him--his informer.
''T-They left! They already left!''
If they had left one minute later, Bal would have caught up with them.''Bal?'' Chaos asked as they ran the trail. They had knocked the two guards unconscious earlier at the village entrance. Bal had taken all the guards and even their weapons for his bravery show. That was careless of him. What could have happened if the real enemy suddenly showed up? Would the two incompetent and drunk guards be able to defend the village? Would Bal make up for it?Earlier, when Carysse heard the sound of weapons clinking and the footsteps together, she could only think of one man that could gather such a force. It would be impossible for a normal child to discern such noises but they were warriors of Thalisse. They trained with nature ever since they could hold weapons. This already happened before when he wasn't in favor of Elder Shimar's rules and she couldn't believe he was actually doing it again. She was late to perceive it though. No wonder Elder Shimar and Ashki noticed it first. A renowned
Carysse almost cried as she bandaged Ashki's left arm. Good thing it wasn't his battle arm but it still hurt to see her friend wounded badly. Ashki was the first to be attacked when he scouted for them. He said that they came out of nowhere, the same as how Carysse felt it earlier. ''I don't know but.. it felt like they were waiting for us,'' Ashki said. True enough, the mountain was filled with different routes and trails. Why were they on the specific road that the three of them took? Their attacks were also intentional, intended to kill them. They weren’t holding back. Ashki’s words made the atmosphere colder than what the night should be. Carysse saw Chaos clench his fists near the entrance, his eyes hidden. ''Chaos, do you have any idea who they are? You always distance yourself if you know something.'' Carysse didn't mean to be harsh but if this was part of Chaos' plan, she was not falling for it. ''Then you have to relax yourself. You also tend to pinpoint your fingers w
As soon as Ashki jumped, Chaos grabbed Carysse by the waist again and carried her out of the cave, plummeting to a ravine. They were not hybrids unlike in the age of Elder Shimar where everyone practiced ancient magic. But what they lacked in magic, they made up for their trained bodies. They were pure humans but leaping to dark chasms weren’t really that new to them. It was one of their regular physical exams when they were still trainees. Still, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t scary.Carysse shut her eyes as she felt trees wheeze past through them and gravity pulled them to the ground but Chaos did a good job of holding her tight.By luck, for the second time, they fell on water, and that was a thousand times better than crashing on earthen ground. This time, the river was a little warmer and wider that they had to swim. Chaos helped her up. She was surprised she still had her bag. Chaos also has his lightsword strapped tightly at his back. It made her think of Ashki already and she supp
They were jumping from one branch to another, making Carysse hope that they could actually go over the boundary without any Mahan at their tails. She had lost count of how many minutes they were already running peacefully. If that was the case, then Ashki bought them enough time. A wave of guilt washed over her mind knowing that they left behind a friend just for them to be able to move forward. No, we will see each other again.Ashki said it himself. No one was going to die tonight, only the Mahan. He was not a weakling. He was the best of them three. Carysse filled her thoughts with positivity. She had to stay focused on her own goal.Chaos was in front of her, leading the way. As his back was facing her, she couldn't help but see the similarity two years ago when she was chasing him, trying to make him come back. They pressed on, passing through trees, until they were almost past the boundary. After that, the moon was covered by clouds, and the shadows came.Carysse didn't know if
The old fort was gloomy than ever. Once upon a time, it was a stronghold for the kings of Apharoth whenever their main camp in the flatlands was wiped out. The place served as their last resort, hence the name, Bezelius or Last Bronze in ancient Apharoth language. It had walls that soared fifty feet high. Plus, it stood on top of a hill and so the four towers touched the clouds during the wet season. It was one of the reasons why it was abandoned. During the seven years of the Great Cold, it was rendered useless because it froze its own soldiers. Shrouded in fog, heavy clouds, and continuous rain, the country began to slowly forget Bezelius that once acted as a shield of the people but of course, people always forget. Only the shadows stay. Now, it was a perfect hideout for the Mahan people.“It’s been three days,” a bearded man wrapped in a thick purple scarf started. He sat cross-legged on the small plain throne “Why haven’t the assassins returned?”“Maybe they encountered something
At the palace, another war was being fought, not by mere weapons but sharp words that were far more dangerous than swords.Visian Vahamor, the king of Apharoth, garbed in velvet and gold clothes, was doing his best not to explode in anger because of the dispute before him. His right and left chancellors were at it again. They seem to have forgotten that they were in the presence of His Majesty.Chancellor Dasran, the king's only sure friend, was already red in restrained anger. The king wanted to take a break from this spat because they had already been debating for more than two hours and no one one was backing down.''Chancellor Dasran, do you really think, with all your experience as an aide to the royal throne for almost twenty years, that reviving an old tradition is an effective way to stop a war?'' A brown-bearded man with a calm expression asked Dasran. He was Waharis, the Left Chancellor, and his subtle tone even with all their bickering meant that he came here prepared.''It
They had detected her. Of course, they would. Carysse was not from here so it was inevitable that the city guards posted on almost every visible rooftop would notice. The singing drunk men sang of the mighty Apharothia at the ship last night. They mentioned the city with flying gold swords. Carysse thought that it was just a play of their tipsy state. The sentries at the entrance weren’t strict as they let anyone enter. But now that she was walking the first street, she could see why Apharothia was called the center city and why they were worthy of being the host for Gairoshi. Their guards weren’t on the ground. They were stationed above. Clothed in red and gold armor, they were like magicians with swords or arrows. She saw one of them nudge his pair's elbows and his partner nodded to the others, as if giving a signal. Looks like it was true that Apharoth was not lenient to its security. Carysse walked faster, her wooden sandals pounding the pavement louder than she intended. The a
“Zeikontour, huh.” The word was foreign to Carysse’s mouth. She knew that in the ancient language, it literally means ‘raise your ranks’. But with her being a Thalisse citizen, it was not unusual that they didn’t know a lot of things in the outside world. “Gairoshi was banned for centuries, right? But Zeikontour wasn’t. It was meant to be for those who wanted to become queen but when Gairoshi became dormant, it was now an event that opened opportunities for ladies who wanted to rise above society. Now, any girl can go from being a stable girl to a feudal lady and even higher,” the lady explained. “Just like me,” she giggled. “I am a daughter of an ordinary merchant. But now I do my own trades. My goal this time is to go a little higher than just being a merchant boss. I’m aiming to become a feudal lady–a true achievement of those who were born in the slums.” Carysse looked at her while they were walking. “Ma’am, may I know your name?” she asked. It was preposterous of her earlier
