Liz POV

I stare at my sister in shock.  She is in a wedding dress that is almost identical to my own.  She must have run the whole way here because she is out of breath.  She braces herself on her knees and pants heavily.

I scoot past her to the door and quickly flip the lock.  “What are you doing in here?” I hiss at her, trying to keep my voice down.

“I have come to rescue you,” Belle whispers.  “I will take your place. It's my job to begin with!”

“No,” I say sternly.  “I am doing this, and that is final.”

Belle runs her fingers through her hair and grunts in frustration.  “Liz, you don’t have a wolf.  It could be dangerous for you here.”

I pull Belle into my arms and hold her close to my body.  She has only just turned eighteen.  She still has so much to experience in life.

I blink away the tears that threaten to fall and ruin my makeup.  “It is time I protect you,” I whisper into her ear.  “You don’t always have to be the strong one.”

Belle pulls away from me and whimpers.  “But I am the strong one.  You aren’t meant to be a spy.  Please let me take your place.”

“Just this once, let me protect you,” I beg of her.  “I love you more than anything.  I cannot let you ruin your whole life because some evil man wants a show of power.”

“What if he finds out that you took my place? He would kill you!” Belle cries as she leans into my hug, resting her head on my shoulder.

He would be upset for sure, but he can’t back out when we are on the altar.

I look into my sister’s eyes, and Belle is staring at me, hoping to change my mind.  She is waiting for me to let her take my place. If a bad marriage won’t ruin her whole life, being a spy on the devil would certainly end it for her. I can’t let that happen.

A knock on my door pulls me from my sister, and I gesture for Belle to hide under the bed. “Please,” I mouth to her silently.

She shakes her head angrily from side to side and holds her ground.

“Just a moment,” I yell out.  “I am still getting dressed.”

I pull Belle into the dressing room and shut the door behind us.  “If they find you here, there is no telling what they will do to you or me.  Just please.  Let me do this for you.  Let me do this for the family.”

“You have spent the past nine years trying to prove yourself worthy to be part of this family when it isn’t necessary,” Belle has tears streaming down her face.  “No one cares that you are adopted.  No one cares that you don’t have a wolf.  You are part of the Wilks family.  Blood or not.”

“How can I feel like part of the family when I don’t have a wolf?  I don’t belong.”  I say as I sniff back the tears forming in my eyes.

“We love you,” Belle cries.  “Please.  Don’t do this for me. It should not be you.”

I quietly step toward the door of the dressing room and slip out.  Locking my sister inside.  I can hear her silent sobs as she realizes that I have locked her in.

“For the sake of the both of us, please be quiet,” I whisper through the door.  “I love you.”

Someone bangs on the door loudly once again.

“Who is it?”  I call out.

I hear the lock on the door click open, and I brace myself for who might come through the door.  Nico, the patriarch of the Phalen family, waltzes into the room without answering me.  “My, my, my,” Nico says as his eyes graze over my body.  “You certainly do clean up nicely.  Are you ready to marry my son?”

A blush travels across my cheeks, and I have to look away from Nico’s heated gaze. I don’t trust myself to speak.  I swallow hard and nod my head.

“That is good,” Nico smirks.  “And you remember our deal?”

“I am supposed to report back to you about your son, Deimos,” I whisper.

“Your family would be safe so long as you behave, little girl,” Nico says as he runs his hands over my shoulders.  “Now, let’s get you married.”

Nico looks me up and down with a smile on his face.  Grabbing me by the elbow, he steers me out of the bedroom and down the hall.

As we enter the gardens, I pause.  Waiting for my father.  I had assumed my father would be giving me away, but I was wrong.  He is sitting with my mother in the front row.  Tears are streaming down my mother’s face, but my father glares at Nico with a grim look on his face.

Nico continues to hold onto my elbow painfully as he leads me to the archway.  I try to keep my eyes straight ahead, but the whispers of those in attendance pull my attention.

“I heard she begged her father for the marriage,” one woman says.  “Deimos really wanted to marry her younger sister.”

“She is adopted, after all,” another woman replies.  “She isn’t even a true member of the Wilks royal bloodline.”

Another woman leans forward in her seat.  “She must be desperate for a mate.  Can you imagine stealing your own sister’s fiance? She is twenty-five and has no wolf.  There is no chance of her finding her mate.”

Keeping my eyes straight ahead, I ignore the painful comments of those in attendance.

Once we reach the archway, I notice an elderly man standing before me.  He gives me a sympathetic look, and I try to remove my elbow from Nico's grasp, but he holds tight.

I grit my teeth and plaster a fake smile on my face.  I don’t want to give anyone a reason to believe I don’t want to be part of the marriage.

Nico finally lets go of my arm and takes his seat among his family.  I look to my right, wanting to lay eyes on my groom finally, but there is no one standing there.  I am standing at the altar alone.  Where is my groom?

Murmurs start spreading, and though no one bothered to explain to me I understand after a moment:  Deimos refused to show up to the wedding because he is embarrassed to be married to the replacement daughter.

My face flushes with embarrassment.  I want to crawl into a hole and die.  Deimos thinks so little of me that he refuses to attend the wedding.  I can hear my father growling with protest behind me, which only adds to my shame.  I have failed.

The elderly man clears his throat and offers me a weak smile.  “We are gathered here today to join together Deimos Phalen and Elizabeth Wilks,” his voice echoes over the crowd.

Oh, Goddess, I try to remain standing.  We are having the wedding without the groom.

  • Game of Power: The Adopted Luna's Redemption    Epilogue

Liz POV I am staring out of the window with a checklist in my hands. Each item on the list has been checked several times. There is nothing else that I need to do. The Lunar Ball is already underway. From my window, I can see groups of people slowly making their way into the town hall that has been transformed into a ballroom. It has already been decided that I will be arriving last, even after the royal Lycan family. Stepping away from the window, I check my makeup in the reflection of the mirror. My face is still round from being pregnant, and my belly is still swollen. Thankfully, the dress that Stella picked out for me hides my round figure. I almost look normal. A quiet knock on my bedroom door pulls me from my reflection. “Come in.” The door only opens slightly, and my sister, Belle, squeezes through. I expected to see her in a ballgown, ready to join the party, but she is not dressed for the occasion. She is in her leather fighting gear. Her hair is pulled ba

Liz POVThe sun is warm on my face, and my eyes flutter open. A blue sky spotted with fluffy, white clouds comes into view. I lay my hand on my stomach, and it is flat. No trace of my pregnancy. Quickly, I get to my feet and look around. Once again, I am in the clearing behind the Moonstone Pack house. The place where my parents died. Everything feels warm and inviting. Is this what death feels like?A woman walks in my direction, and I immediately know who she is. “Mom,” I call out as I run toward her. I reach out my arms to embrace her, but my hands move through her body like she is made of mist. Looking between my hands and my birth mother, I am confused. “Why can’t I touch you?” I cry. My birth mother lets out a sharp sigh and wipes the tears falling from her eyes. “Now is not your time.” “I’m not dead?” I whisper. “You are stuck between this life and the next,” my birth mother explains. “You have a choice. You can stay here in the afterlife. Or you can fight to

Liz POV Six Months Later I have been staring at this screen for so long that my eyes are starting to go crossed. Since the battle, there has been so much to do. Each of the rogues that was detained has been questioned and subsequently put to death. As much as I hated to admit it, Faris Jr was right. A precedent had to be set that we were not a pack to be challenged. As if there wasn’t enough on my plate, Faris Jr decided that the next Lunar Ball would be held at our pack. It is only a few weeks away, and almost all of the planning has been done. I slam the screen of my laptop shut and pinch the bridge of my nose painfully. The pup growing inside of me kicks me roughly, and I groan uncomfortably. My stomach has grown to an enormous size over the past six months. Just when I didn’t think it was possible for me to get any bigger, I did. Bracing my hands on the arms of my chair, I struggle to push myself out of the office seat. As I am attempting to stand, someone knocks o

Deimos POVI know I am leaning heavily on Elizabeth as we make our way out of the forest. My arm is flung over her shoulder, and she is struggling to keep me on my feet. But she doesn’t give up, and she doesn’t complain. As soon as we break through the tree line, I see medics running toward us. Elizabeth lets out a sigh of relief, but I am not ready to go to the hospital. As Alpha of the pack, I need to oversee the cleanup of the battle. The medics take me from Elizabeth. They try to make me lie down on a stretcher, but I refuse. “I need to see my men.”“Alpha,” one of the medics tries to reason with me. “You are injured.” “I am not dying,” I groan at the medic, and I struggle to make my way up the hill to the pack house. My hands claw at the ground in front of me as I try to make it to the top of the hill. I can hear Elizabeth groan behind me, and she wraps her arm around my waist to help me to the pack house. “You really need to be seen,” she hisses under her breath. “La

  • Game of Power: The Adopted Luna's Redemption    Chapter 107

Liz POV I don’t look over my shoulder to see what Faris Jr is doing, but by the look on Nico’s wolf’s face, it is horrific. I can tell that Nico’s wolf wants to run from the Lycan King, but something is keeping him here. He has to know that this is a battle he cannot win, but it appears he is willing to die trying. Something furry brushes up against my leg, and I glance down to see Duko standing at my side. He looks awful. Deep cuts are oozing across his black fur, and chunks of flesh are missing from his body. I don’t know how he is still standing. ‘I’ve got it from here,’ Deimos voice breaks through my mind. But I don’t move from my protective stance. ‘You are injured.’ ‘I have been worse,’ Deimos lies to me. ‘This is my fight, not yours.’ I know I have to back away. Deimos needs to be the one to kill his father. After everything he has been through, he deserves that much. Nico’s wolf is pawing at the ground, growling at Duko. They are getting ready to attack ea

Liz POV “You can run, but you can’t hide,” Nico calls out from behind me. “I know these woods like the back of my hand. I will find you.” Panic and adrenaline are coursing through my veins as I slip between the trees. I duck under low branches and squeeze through narrow tree openings. Trying to find any way to slow Nico down. My feet are slipping on the fallen leaves as I run, but I try not to let it slow me down. I have never done much training, and I am beginning to get winded. ‘I don’t know how much longer I can run,’ I whine to Majesty. ‘You just have to keep going for a little longer,’ she encourages me. ‘Our mate is on his way. I can sense it.’ I don’t dare look over my shoulder as I flee. I don’t want to know how close Nico is to catching me. He is faster and stronger than I am. I may have been able to take down Brittany with just my claws, but I won’t be able to take on Nico alone. I trip over a fallen branch and tumble onto the ground. Glancing over my s
