“How was it?” Selene was at the door as soon as I arrived at my main chambers, her Bambi eyes wide with curiosity and anticipation. She looked like a child finally released from her governess.

I stepped inside, shutting the door in Sylvester’s face.

“It didn’t,” I said flatly, kicking off my shoes.

Selene blinked

“Was it because of the armor? Did he have a hard time taking it off, or did he think it was ugly and was unaroused, or maybe…” She gasped, her voice dropping a few octaves, “afflicted?”

“None of that,” I answered, my tone clipped as I walked towards my bed and sank in.

Last night had been nothing short of torture. The moans still echoed in my mind as if they had been drilled into my skull.

I hadn't slept with the king, but I might as well have from the way his concubines had screamed his name all night. It had felt too much like a violation.

“He said he would not consummate the marriage until I am ready to.”
