FAZER LOGINEverything happened in slow motion after that. Ariana knew a moment of sheer terror as she looked into the black eyes of Paul and Sam, realising what they intended to do to her, knowing she would never hug her Dad again, or mess up a cheer, or dance at homecoming. Admitting it was cowardly but unable to prevent herself from doing it anyway, Ariana closed her eyes, hoping they would at least knock her out before dragging her up into the woods.
The sound of someone else running through the water sickened Ariana further, and tears fell from her eyes, thinking it was Derek, having recovered from the kick to his balls, so when the brother’s grip on her vanished, it took a few moments for her to open her eyes.
The sight that greeted Ariana was like a scene from a movie. A figure dressed all in black was fighting the two brothers at the same time, making it look like he did it for a living. Muscles bunched up as her hero laid into Paul, turning at the last second as Sam launched himself at the attacker, trying to protect his brother, but he was met with a large fist to his jaw, and he fell to the ground, allowing Ariana to get her first glimpse of who was saving her.
Harsh grey eyes locked with hers over the brutal scene unfolding as Hael held one of the brothers in a headlock, while fisting his meaty hand into the other brother's hair, twisting it further every time the brute tried to move.
Ariana’s next-door neighbour barked something at her as he tightened his hold around Paul, but she didn’t hear him, preoccupied in macabre fascination with the way Paul’s face was turning from a bright red to an almost bluish purple as his eyes rolled into the back of his head.
“ARIANA!”
This time she registered that Hael was talking to her, as he let go of the man he’d choked unconscious, to turn to his brother, drawing back his fist and slamming it twice into Sam’s bloodied face.
Both of the brothers lay unconscious at Hael’s feet, and Ariana had the sudden urge to laugh. After everything that had happened to her today, all she could do was laugh, and so that’s exactly what she did.
Hael looked at her as if she had completely lost her mind, causing her to laugh harder, on her ass in the rain, being watched by one of the sexiest males in school.
Time stood still as he stayed a safe distance away, giving Ariana the moment she needed as if he could relate to how she felt, and Ariana was grateful. So many well-meaning people who tried comforting others wound up invading personal space and boundaries, offering hugs or non-stop chatter, but not Hael; he just stood there, offering safety while she lost her mind.
Trying to stand up, Ariana’s laughter quickly turned to tears as her ankle buckled again, only this time, before she fell, Hael was there, grabbing onto her arm and holding her steady.
“Do you think you can balance on one foot for a second?” He asked quietly, concern evident in his dark gaze, “I think so.”
After assuring himself that she wasn’t going to fall again, Hael shrugged off his jacket and placed it around her shoulders. Until that moment, Ariana hadn’t realised how cold she was and admitted she might be going into shock.
Hael, however, looked in complete control of the situation.
A groan interrupted any further attempt at conversation as one of the brothers started regaining consciousness, and Hael’s face contorted with fury. “Stay down!” He commanded, kicking Paul in the face, knocking the larger boy out completely.
Hael stepped closer, in the pouring rain, his grey shirt plastered to his perfect body, and Ariana had a moment where she was in danger of swooning. In this minute, it was just the two of them, the cheerleader with a reputation, and the most dangerous guy in school, looking at each other without their masks on. Slowly, Ariana reached out, offering her hand to her neighbour, the cute boy next door who secretly listened to her Dad’s bedtime stories, and when he clasped it, a small grin bringing out his dimples, something changed, evolved, and in the months ahead, would manifest as the time they fell in love.
HAEL'S POV
I had to physically restrain myself from killing those two filthy cunts, when I got closer to the water and realised it was my woman screaming, and I saw their grubby fucking hands touching her. I damn near lost my goddamn mind. Paul and Sam were predators, but their older brother Derek was usually the instigator and the puppet master of all of their crimes. They were parasites in the woods and hardly ever crossed my path, but I knew of them. It was my job to know everyone in the area, and I prided myself on doing just that. There would be time to punish the McCann brothers after I’d got Ariana home safely and made time to contact my guys to help with some jungle justice.
Then she held out her hand, and all of a sudden, I felt all fluttery-me, the next in line for the family business, nervous because a woman I would gladly die for wanted the safety of physical contact with me. I grabbed that hand so fast I'm sure I broke some kind of record, and my face lit up like a kid at Christmas. Jesus Christ, I really have got it bad.
“If it hurts too much, let me know, okay?” I’m trying to earn some cool points back by being less creepy, but damned if I could get myself to let go of her hand; if anything, my body was reacting like superglue, wanting to bind itself to Ariana as tightly as possible. To be fair, she didn’t seem to mind. I don’t know how much it had to do with going into shock, which I could see she was trying to hide from me, but a part of me secretly hoped that she continued holding my hand and hobbling along because she craved my touch as much as I craved hers.
This thing growing between us felt like it could be real, and not just a reaction to being saved from a bad situation, but I won’t push. When it comes to Ariana Scott, I was a patient man. I can wait.
It was a slow walk back to my car. I tried not to stare too much at the girl holding onto my hand, but it was hard. Especially when she looked at me like I was some kind of hero, I’ll be damned if I’ll correct her, though, after all, if there was a soul out there that I would do heroic shit for, it was her.
Hael walked into his home to find Max on the scaffolding pulling wallpaper off the upper walls; He had to hit something, anything at this point because instead of feeling on top of the world after the hot kisses earlier, he had somehow fucked it up, making Ariana think he wasn't really interested. That fucking moron who honked his fucking horn could've been a faction rival, and he was so caught up in the moment that, if it had been any of the rivals, Hael would've been killed, or Ariana caught in the crossfire, but of course he couldn't come out and tell her that."Well, you're in a right mood, aren't ya?" Max was high up enough on the scaffolding to feel safe, watching as Hael became a human wrecking ball. Walls got smashed, timber was thrown, and the nail gun was being wielded like a handpiece. There was no getting in the way of the boss in this mood; only destruction would calm the beast."I am twenty fucking years old!" Down goes the nail gun, replaced by a sledgehammer, and what
The air was warm and balmy, the perfect night for a walk, and as Ariana watched Hael put on his boots, she gathered her courage.Hael sauntered off the porch; his way of moving was so seductive that Ariana could feel the now-familiar pull in her gut signaling her desire for this dangerously attractive man, and God, when he grinned like he was doing right now, it made the butterflies in her stomach take flight.Hael Wilder was twenty years old, two years older than Ariana, and no doubt very experienced if the gossip mill was right about him. The man screamed sensuality in everything he did, from spearing meat up with a fork and bringing it slowly to his mouth, to walking with that predatory roll of his hips, the way he was doing now. Hael was over six feet by a few inches, and Ariana had already seen him half naked when his friend Max and he fixed up his family home, so she knew he was all muscle. Not like a bodybuilder, more streamlined, if there even was such a thing.Heat pooled low
I'd been hanging out with Ariana for weeks now since the McCann boys "left town." Sometimes I could feel her eyes on me whenever we weren't together, and dinners next door were now a nightly thing. Max warned that I might need to buy bigger clothes, a taunt that has me chasing him across the field and into the street. But damned if it isn't the happiest I could ever recall being. Max was on me to take care of our business interests, and I was, but it didn't go unnoticed that I'd been lenient lately. And people were getting too used to it. Soon, I would have to become the monster people feared again just to keep things running smoothly.Ariana shared a sweet smile with me as we sat across from each other, eating our dinner and swapping school stories. She blushed whenever I smiled back, and our eyes seemed to be glued to each other. I could feel my heartbeat start to drum, gaining momentum like a runaway freight train; I didn't even try to deny that I'd fallen for her hard. "So, Hael,
The house looked lived in again, and as Ariana and Raymond pulled into the driveway, the smell of Hannah’s home cooking came to greet them.“If you change your mind about needing home help, let me know, Queen, because I will take Miss Hannah off your hands in a heartbeat.”Ray got out of the car, grabbed their purchases, and headed up onto the wraparound porch. He turned around with his eyebrow arched, though he realized Ariana was still in the car.She waved towards the house, “You go in, I just need a few minutes to prepare.” And with that and a twirl that only Ray could pull off in heels, he disappeared into the house.Ariana let out a deep sigh; they’d pulled in late last night and gone to bed as soon as they could, so she didn’t get a chance to look at her childhood home until now.Memories of playing hide-and-seek with Dad, dancing on the porch without a care in the world, the Summer nights bouncing on the trampoline while Jack tended to their garden, throwing the ball for the do
This is the first time I have introduced my characters six chapters into a story. I am doing this because the pace of the book will start to get faster, and if the characters get confusing, you can come back to this chapter.Mercy is a diverse town where people stay, and businesses are owned by the same families for generations. In Mercy, there are two Mafia families who have had a truce for the last decade. The old Dons are talking about settling down and having their sons take over the business. Hael and Damien are the sons destined to rule the empires, but with two new Dons at the helm, proving themselves as leaders sometimes means old ties need to be cut and new contracts are fought for, new territories built and a new rule will reign as they see fit, no matter the cost.Raymond is Ari’s best friend. He is a force to be reckoned with, grew up in foster homes, is openly gay, and was bullied in school until one day Ariana sat down beside him, and they became instant besties. The ocean crashing was enough to wake Paul from his slumber; his head was groggy, and he felt disoriented. As he tried to rub the sleep from his eyes and failed, Paul realised he wasn’t in his bedroom.Looking around, he saw wet sand and, further out, the ocean crashing onto the shore. Sitting at the entrance of what was obviously a cave, a lone figure faced him.“Oh, good, you’re awake.” The man stood, dusting off his shorts, smiling as he ambled towards him.As the man's face came into view, Paul realised it was Hael. His brothers always scoffed when Paul tried to tell them to watch out for him, but he'd bet his month's wages if they saw the look on Hael’s face now, they would agree he was dangerous.Hael sidestepped two mounds, and Paul didn’t pay them much attention; he just wanted to know what was going on.“Do you know why you’re here?” He asked as soon as he reached Paul.“I dunno, man. I went to bed and woke up here?” Paul tugged on the chains that he was hogtied with, confused
