Chapter 3

Author: Silk & Feathers
I was making the final preparations for my escape when Melanie Renault showed up at the mansion under the excuse of "checking on me".

Benedict happened to be at the office handling an emergency that day, so only a few maids were in the house with me.

The instant Melanie's overpowering perfume reached me, every drop of blood in my body turned cold.

"Mrs. Stiles, long time no see."

She didn't even bother hiding the satisfaction in her voice.

I stayed seated on the couch and said nothing.

Her heels clicked steadily toward me until a sharp crack suddenly broke the silence of the living room.

"Oh, I'm so sorry." Melanie gave a light laugh. "I accidentally stepped on your palette. Then again, I guess you won't be needing it anymore. It's not like a blind woman can paint."

I dug my nails hard into the palm of my numb right hand. They sank into my skin, but I couldn't feel a thing.

My silence only encouraged her.

Melanie leaned in until her lips were close to my ear and lowered her voice so that no one else could hear.

"Mrs. Stiles, I have to say, your eyes are wonderful. You know, they're mine now. And last night, when Benedict looked into these eyes, you should've seen the way he kissed me…"

My stomach churned, but I tamped down the urge to vomit.

"Doesn't it bother you?" I asked coldly. "Walking around with pieces of someone else's body inside you?"

"Bother me?" Melanie laughed. "I'm about to leave for a world tour. Meanwhile, you'll spend the rest of your life trapped in this house, hiding from the world because you can't even take care of yourself."

Just then, voices sounded near the entrance.

Benedict's mother and sister had arrived.

"Oh, Melanie! You're here!"

Whitney Arnold sounded eager when she greeted Melanie. The moment her attention shifted to me, however, her tone hardened.

"Look at you. You're blind, you can't do anything for yourself, and you can't even bring Ben a glass of water anymore. What good are you as his wife? Just step aside and let Melanie marry him instead!"

Trisha Stiles immediately joined in. "Exactly. Melanie's a world-class artist who's about to go on an international tour. And you? You can't even take care of yourself."

I endured their insults in silence until familiar footsteps came from the front door.

Benedict was home.

Almost immediately, Melanie cried out and fell to the floor, knocking over the hot coffee on the coffee table as she went down.

"Ouch! That hurts!"

She clutched her wrist and looked up tearfully as Benedict entered. "Ben, I was just trying to pour Evelyn some coffee. But I think she's been in a bad mood because she pushed me all of a sudden…"

Benedict strode toward us. Without hesitation, he went straight to Melanie, carefully helped her to her feet, and moved protectively in front of her.

"Are you okay? Did the coffee burn you?"

He anxiously checked her hand, and only after making sure she wasn't hurt did he finally turn toward me, his tone accusatory and impatient.

"Evelyn, you can't see. Stop reaching around when you don't know what's in front of you! Melanie starts her tour next month. What are you going to do if she gets hurt because of you?"

I remained where I was, my empty gaze turned toward his voice.

This was the same man who had sworn to become my eyes and take care of me for the rest of my life.

Yet, the moment Melanie was involved, he didn't even bother asking what had happened before deciding I was at fault.

I lowered my head, the blood draining from my face, and made my voice as timid as possible.

"I'm sorry… I didn't mean to."

Seeing me so meek and helpless finally stirred the faintest trace of guilt in Benedict.

He sent Whitney, Trisha, and Melanie away, then came back to me and gently wrapped his arms around me.

"I'm sorry, honey. I shouldn't have spoken to you like that." He sighed. "To make it up to you, I've rented a private island for our anniversary next week. We'll renew our vows under the fireworks. How does that sound?"

After the storm, Benedict completely lost it.Years of heavy drinking and refusing to eat had already taken a toll on his body. By then, the disease had already spread throughout his body.Stiles Group officially entered bankruptcy proceedings soon afterward.Whitney and Trisha took what little money remained for living expenses and disappeared overnight. The man who had once run Stiles Group and commanded everyone's attention was now lying alone on an extra bed in the hallway of an overcrowded public hospital, with very little time left. Then, during a violent storm one night, Benedict became delirious.Despite being close to death, he suddenly found enough strength to rip the IV from his hand and stumble out of the hospital unnoticed.Wearing nothing but a thin hospital gown, h

Three days later, Benedict somehow scraped together some money by selling the last of his personal belongings. He spent it all on the finest art supplies he could find, including expensive canvases, custom brushes, and the paint I'd once loved. Then, in the plaza outside Horizon Tower, he had a small glass studio built to shield the supplies from the rain.He kneeled outside it in the middle of a downpour, soaked from head to toe, holding a sign he'd written in his own blood."Evelyn, please paint again. I want to see you go back to the dream you loved."Holding a black umbrella, I walked through the rain with my security team and stepped inside the glass studio. The moment Benedict saw me, excitement shook his entire body.He scrambled inside after me and held out a custom-made paintbrush with both hands, staring at me with desperation and hope."Honey, go ahead. Paint anything you want. I'll clean your brushes for you every day. I'll spend the rest of my life posing for you i

Benedict's outburst immediately threw the ballroom into chaos.Several members of my security team rushed forward and pinned him to the carpet only a few feet away from me."Let me go! That's my wife! Evelyn, look at me. It's Ben!" He fought desperately against them, lifting his head so he could keep staring into my eyes. One moment he was crying, and the next, he was laughing through his tears."You can see now. Thank God. You're alive. You're really alive…"Whitney and Trisha quickly pushed their way through the crowd.Whitney froze when she saw me, but her shock lasted only a moment before excitement lit up her face.I knew exactly what she was thinking. If I was still Benedict's wife, then as far as she was concerned, the Stiles family was saved."Evelyn, you're alive, and you're running some huge conglomerate."Whitney marched toward me, immediately slipping back into the same entitled tone she'd always used."Where have you been for the last three years? Do you have an

Three years later, at an exclusive private hospital in Newell, the doctor carefully removed the bandages from my eyes. The sudden burst of sunlight was so bright that I instinctively squeezed them shut.A few seconds later, I slowly opened them again, and the world came back into focus.A brilliant blue sky stretched beyond the window, white clouds drifted overhead, and right in front of me, Josephine stood with tears streaming down her face."Evelyn, you can see!" She threw her arms around me. "You can finally see again!"I hugged her tightly, a relieved smile spreading across my face.During my three years overseas, I'd not only undergone a successful corneal transplant, but I'd also reconciled with Grandpa's family and officially taken over his enormous multinational conglomerate.Three years in the business world had changed me completely. The naive, timid woman I'd once been was gone. I'd learned when to be ruthless, when to make difficult decisions without hesitation, a

When Benedict finally woke from his coma, he completely lost his mind. One sentence from my Braille journal had destroyed whatever restraint he had left. It was Melanie's smug admission that she'd paid the driver to cause the crash.Benedict used every off-the-books contact and resource Stiles Group had to reopen the investigation and uncover the truth at all costs.Once he started throwing enough money at the investigation, answers came quickly.A huge payment from Melanie's personal account was sitting in the driver's overseas bank account. But that wasn't the worst of it.Benedict kept digging and eventually uncovered the truth behind the incident from three years earlier, when Melanie had supposedly taken a knife for him.As it turned out, the man with the knife wasn't some random criminal at all. Melanie had paid him to attack Benedict so she could step in and make herself look like his savior. With that performance, she'd convinced Benedict that he owed her his life. From

The fire burned through the entire night and wasn't extinguished until an unexpected downpour swept across the island at dawn.By then, I was already aboard Josephine's private jet, listening emotionlessly as she described the drone footage playing on her tablet. The beautiful hillside mansion had been reduced to ruins.Benedict was on his hands and knees, digging through the wreckage with his bare hands like a madman. His bodyguards kept trying to drag him away, but he fought them off and continued tearing through the debris. His expensive suit was scorched and ripped. Both of his hands were covered in blood, but Benedict seemed completely oblivious to the pain."We found her!
