On the way to an art exhibition, I get into a devastating car accident. My face is covered in blood as my husband, Benedict Stiles, frantically tears through the wreckage. He pulls me free and rushes me into emergency surgery. As the anesthesia begins to take effect, I vaguely hear his voice. "Doctor, she's already unconscious and badly injured. Remove her corneas and transplant them into Melanie right now. Her world tour's kicking off next month. She can't afford to lose her sight!" "But your wife is an artist, too," the doctor says in a trembling voice. "If she goes blind, it'll destroy her!" Benedict's tone leaves no room for discussion. "Melanie took a knife for me years ago. I owe her my life, and I'm going to repay that debt. "Once my wife loses her sight, I'll transfer all the shares I own to her and make sure she's taken care of for the rest of her life. I'll be her eyes. But Melanie needs her sight back immediately." I tell myself that I must be dreaming. But when I wake up, my entire world is pitch-black. The sheer absurdity of what he's done overwhelms me, along with despair. So when Benedict books an entire private island and prepares to renew his vows to me beneath a sky filled with fireworks, I don't hesitate to set the whole island on fire.

Chapter 1

"Honey, you're awake."

Benedict Stiles' voice was hoarse and unsteady from crying, his tone filled with a devoted husband's concern.

If I hadn't heard him give the order, I might have been moved by how devastated he sounded.

I didn't answer. I simply turned my unfocused eyes toward his voice.

Benedict immediately pulled me into his arms. His voice cracked as he said, "I'm sorry… I should've protected you.

"The doctor said pieces of the windshield went into your eyes during the accident. The damage was too severe. They did everything they could, but… they couldn't save your sight."

How could he hold me this tenderly and cry over what had happened when he was the one who had my corneas removed and given to his first love?

"But don't worry." Benedict cupped my face, his tone urgent. "I swear I'll transfer all my shares to you. You'll never have to worry about money again. I'll take care of you at home for the rest of your life. From now on, I'll be your eyes. I'll take care of everything."

I swallowed the nausea rising in my throat. I didn't scream at him or fight to get away.

I knew exactly how helpless I was.

A woman who had just gone blind and couldn't defend herself had nothing to gain from exposing him now. If Benedict realized I knew the truth, I might not survive long enough to escape him.

So, I leaned weakly against his chest and clutched his shirt with trembling hands.

Tears spilled down my cheeks as I played the part of a woman whose entire world had fallen apart and who had no one left to depend on but her husband.

"Ben… I can't see. I can't see anything…"

"I'm here. I'm right here."

He stroked my back gently, soothing me like someone calming a pet.

Then I instinctively tried to lift my right hand and touch the bandages around my eyes. That was when I realized, with sudden horror, that I couldn't feel anything below my wrist.

I tried again, harder this time, but the hand that had held a paintbrush countless times refused to move.

"My hand…"

The panic that tore through me now was real as I screamed, "What's wrong with my hand?"

The entire room went silent.

Several seconds passed before my attending physician finally spoke, his voice hesitant.

"Mrs. Stiles… the impact from the accident completely severed the nerves in your right hand. With the medical treatments currently available, the damage can't be repaired."

Benedict tightened his arms around my trembling body and kept murmuring into my ear, "It's okay. I'll take care of you."

But the moment the doctor finished speaking, I unmistakably felt Benedict let out a long breath.

Of course, he was relieved.

Blind and crippled, I was helpless enough for him to control, with no way to escape his grasp.
