Emma watched from the farmhouse window as people began moving along the road toward her property. Some carried empty containers. Others carried sticks or weapons.

Not everyone in the crowd wanted violence. Some were desperate, their faces drawn, their movements slow. They had been convinced that Emma was deliberately withholding resources.

Rafe checked the entrances and made sure the two houses could communicate. He urged Emma to stay inside while he spoke to the crowd.

"No." She grabbed her sh

"Tell me everything." Emma's voice came out low and flat, and she was surprised by how steady it sounded. "Every word. Start from the beginning."Derek rubbed the back of his neck. The wind pushed dust across the concrete between them. "I was told the payment was for special treatment. An experimental course, something your father's regular doctors couldn't offer.""And you believed that.""I didn't ask." He glanced at her, then away. "Adrian promised me a large reward for delivering it. I took the envelope and handed it over. That was all.""You never wondered what was in it?""I didn't want to know.""Did you know it was connected to my father's death?""No." He said it too quickly. "Not then. I swear I didn't."She held his gaze until he looked at his shoes. "Did you ever feel guilty?""I did what I had to do.""That isn't what I asked.""It's what I've got." His jaw worked. "I wasn't responsible for what happened afterward, Emma. I was a courier.""You chose money over a man's lif

Emma kept staring at the screen long after Rafe handed her the phone. The pixels blurred and sharpened as her eyes swam, but the two figures on the step never changed. Adrian, calm and upright. Derek beside him, hands in his pockets, shoulders loose, like a man waiting for a cab."I thought he'd run," she said. "After the lodge. After what he said to me.""He didn't run." Rafe's voice was flat. "He went home.""He's been with Adrian this whole time." Her throat tightened. "Every time I thought he was hiding, he was reporting.""Probably for much longer than we realized," Nathaniel said. He sat on the floor with his back against a pillar, one hand pressed to his ribs. "Derek wasn't a pawn Adrian picked up last year. He's been inside this operation for a decade.""He gave Adrian my movements." Rafe crouched beside her. "Where we were headed, who we were with. That's how they found the lodge, and the settlement, and the bank.""I know." She handed the phone back. Her fingers had gone col

Nathaniel pinched the screen to enlarge the photograph. The page was creased and torn at one corner, but enough of the typed lines survived to read. "This is a transfer of ownership," he said slowly. "A major portion of the infrastructure project, signed over to you.""Legally?""Legally. Before your father died." He tilted the phone. "There's a condition, though. You have to activate it in person. Present the original document, verify your identity. Nobody else can do it for you."Emma stared at the line. The room around her seemed to go very quiet. "So Adrian can't take it without me.""Not unless he forces you to cooperate.""Which is why he keeps trying." Rafe's voice was dark. "And why he lost his temper when you said no.""What does the project actually control?" Emma asked.Nathaniel scrolled through the photos until he reached a list. "Water storage facilities. Underground pipelines. Emergency power equipment. And a large tract of land around a reservoir, a big one, east of th

The first gunshots came from the road, three sharp cracks in a row, and the whole yard seemed to inhale at once."Back from the entrance!" Rafe's voice cut over the shouting. "Everyone away from the gate, move!"Emma grabbed the nearest child by the wrist and pulled. Behind her, boots hammered the gravel, and a woman was screaming for someone named Danny. Nathaniel had Margaret by the elbow and was shoving folders into a canvas bag with his free hand, his bandage already slipping."Take the vehicles!" Emma called. "Children and the injured first. Go!"People ran in every direction. A man dragged a mattress toward the truck for no reason Emma could see. A girl kept calling for her shoes. The settlement was coming apart in front of her, and she could do nothing except keep moving. Then she heard the sound of splitting plastic. She turned. One of Adrian's men stood at the back of the school beside the water storage, an axe in his hand. He swung again, and the big blue container cracked fr

Adrian didn't shout again. He waited. Through the gap in the boards, Emma watched him stand at the edge of the yard with his hands folded in front of him, like a man waiting for a late train."He's alone at the front," Rafe muttered. "But he has at least a dozen behind him.""Eleven," Nathaniel said. "I counted.""That's not better."Emma's mouth had gone dry. She smoothed her jacket over the photograph she'd tucked inside it, as if he might see it through the fabric. "He wants me to come out.""Absolutely not.""If I don't, they'll come in." She turned to face him. "I'll stay where you can see me. Close enough to run.""Emma...""We said we'd decide big things together." She held his eyes. "So decide with me."He looked at her for a long, hard moment, and she could see him weighing every way it could go wrong. Finally, he exhaled. "Ten steps. Not one more.""Ten."She pushed open the door and walked out into the glare. The air smelled of dust and engine oil, and the men along the fen

“Whose name?” Emma gripped Margaret’s wrist. “Tell me.”“I’d rather you read it.” Margaret drew a breath. “The agreement was written before your father died. Adrian signed it, and your father, and Rafe’s father.”Emma looked at Rafe, who had come up beside them, pale and silent.“What did it cover?”“Ownership of a project meant to build emergency water and power infrastructure for communities in a crisis.” Margaret’s mouth tightened. “Your father believed it would save lives someday. He was right. And Adrian wanted to own all of it.”“Rafe’s father handled the finances,” Rafe said, almost to himself.“He did.”“Why wouldn’t my father sign the final terms?” Emma asked.“He found out what Adrian planned. Not to help people, but to control who could reach the water and the power. To charge for them.” Margaret’s voice was bitter. “Your father refused. Adrian threatened his family, and that’s when he started hiding evidence. If something happened to him, he wanted you to find the truth.”
