Chapter 3

作者: Big Bready
"What did you call him?"

Caitlyn suddenly turned around and grabbed Millie Sheppard's wrist tightly. She then looked Millie up and down.

Millie struggled free, handed me the medicine, and stepped in front of me to protect me.

"You're a bad person! Don't hurt my dad!

"Get out! This is my home!"

Caitlyn clenched her fists for a moment. She then slowly released them.

She looked at Millie for a long time and said nothing.

After a long silence, she finally asked in a deep voice, "Whose child is she?"

My heart felt like it had been crushed in someone's grip. I could barely breathe from the pain.

My phone suddenly rang. It was the cemetery salesperson.

"When are you going to pay the money you owe–"

Before he could finish, Caitlyn snatched the phone away and hung up.

"Did you find a woman like this just to get revenge on me? Someone who does nothing but ask you for money every day?" She asked through clenched jaws.

My throat felt dry. I started coughing.

Caitlyn frowned. I felt her warm palm on my back while she gently patted it.

"That explains why I've waited five years and never saw you come for revenge.

"Ian, you're destroying yourself just to hurt me!"

A mocking smile appeared at the corner of my mouth.

How could someone who was about to die have the strength to hate anyone?

She grabbed my hand as if she had finally made up her mind.

"I'll make arrangements for that kid.

"Come home with me."

She looked at me. Her eyes finally turned red.

"Let the past stay in the past. Okay?

"Ian, I'll find a good family for this kid. As long as you come home, I won't hold anything from the past against you."

I pulled away and pushed her out the door.

"Caitlyn."

A soft chuckle came from outside.

I instantly clenched my fists.

Mason stood at the entrance. He had a designer suit that looked completely out of place with this run-down shack.

He grabbed Caitlyn's hand and smiled as he waved his phone.

"Why do you spoil Nelly so much? I just cooked dinner, and you're out here promising to buy her a gourmet burger.

"The bodyguards told me you came here, so I came over as quickly as I could."

He finally saw me.

His smile froze.

"I-Ian?"

After seeing Caitlyn nod, he froze for a second. His eyes instantly welled with tears.

"We finally found you! Perfect timing. I already made dinner. Why don't we eat together?"

I stared at him.

"With you? The murderer who burned his own mother alive?"

Mason's face turned pale. His eyes reddened.

"Ian, I didn't mean to do it back then. Those years weren't easy for me either. They were afraid people would discover the truth, so they forced me to stay inside that 99-story safe house. Caitlyn and Nelly watched me like a hawk the entire time."

He looked up with a bitter smile.

"You were in prison. I was just imprisoned outside."

I coughed so badly I couldn't speak. Millie ran over and pushed him away.

"If you don't leave, I'm calling the police!"

Mason froze. He looked at Caitlyn. He then smiled and grabbed Millie's hand.

"Oh? Does Ian have an illegitimate daughter out here?

"She's definitely his biological daughter. Whenever something happens, all she knows is calling the police."

He glanced back at Caitlyn's dark expression and thoughtfully added, "Don't worry, Caitlyn. Having the entire family reunited matters more than anything. When I get back, I'll clean Nelly's room and let–"

Caitlyn's expression changed.

"Enough. If he hadn't been so petty back then and insisted on calling the police–"

She glanced at me coldly. "He wouldn't have suffered all these years. He asked for it."

Mason held my hand and leaned close to my ear.

"I'll take good care of your daughter, Ian."

He paused.

"Of course, just like how I took care of your adoptive mother."

My eyes narrowed.

"I showed her the surgery where they changed your face into mine.

"She could have survived, but she couldn't handle it mentally. That night, she bit through her oxygen tube.

"She suffocated herself to death."

Mason's expression changed from fear to emptiness. He stood up, walked over to Caitlyn, wrapped his arms around her waist."Caitlyn, I only did it because I loved you too much."I was a fake heir. Before Ian came back, everyone said you and I were a perfect match made in heaven. But the moment he returned, everything changed. I was afraid you would forget me. I was afraid no one would want me anymore. Everything I did, it was only because I loved you too much."Caitlyn pried his fingers away."The person I was engaged to was a member of the Sheppard family, but you are not part of the Sheppard family. You never were."She raised the scalpel again. "How many times did you cut his face? I'll make you experience every single one of them."Mason suddenly backed against the wall. He pulled out a report with trembling hands. His eyes went wide. "No you can't! I'm the father of your unborn child!"Caitlyn stopped moving her hand.Mason looked like he had grabbed onto the last lifeli

I floated beneath the ceiling and looked down at the body lying on the operating table. It looked pale, thin, and lifeless.A white sheet was placed over the body up to the chin, revealing only a face full of scars.I laughed bitterly. In the end, I still hadn't saved enough money for the grave beside my adoptive mother's.The hospital corridor at midnight was quiet like a cemetery.I tried to pass through the window and leave, but something held me back. I could only drift around above the ward. Then I saw Caitlyn. She walked over quickly. Her shirt was wrinkled, and her eyes were bloodshot. There was a dried blood mark on her cheekbone. This wasn't the calm and elegant Caitlyn I knew. Every time she showed this expression, it was because of Mason. She stopped in front of the ward door for a moment. She then walked straight toward me.She passed through my body. She froze. She suddenly turned around and looked at the empty space behind her. She raised her hand and looked at

"Pull up the surveillance footage."Dr. Cameron hesitated for a moment, but he still went to the security office.Ten minutes later, a laptop was placed in front of Caitlyn. It was a black-and-white footage of the night from three years ago.An elderly woman lay on the hospital bed. Her entire body was wrapped in bandages, and her eyes were closed. The door opened. Mason walked in. He was in a suit with his hair perfectly styled and a gentle smile on his face.He sat beside the bed. The old woman opened her eyes."It's me, Mason."Her eyes widened instantly.Mason retrieved his phone, unlocked the screen, and held it in front of her.The video showed Caitlyn's operating room.Caitlyn was standing under the surgical lights with a scalpel in her hand. She was performing my face replacement surgery.I lay unconscious on the operating table. My face was covered with blood-stained gauze. My original features were already impossible to recognize. The old woman's body began shakin

The lights in the operating room were still on.Caitlyn leaned against the wall. Her fingers subconsciously rubbed against the edge of her sleeve. Her heartbeat suddenly went out of control."Get all of Ian's medical records. Bring the doctor who performed my surgery back then."She suddenly recalled some things. She recalled how I coughed up blood every time the seasons changed, but she had never asked why.She recalled how every time she brought up having another child, I would open my mouth, sigh, and refuse. Now she knew why.Back then, I wanted to say, 'The person who saved you was me. I can't have another child anymore. I'm in so much pain,' but I never said anything. That was because Mason had taken the chance first. He held onto fake medical reports while pretending to be her savior. She believed him.Footsteps came from the end of the hallway.Dr. Cameron, who had performed the surgery years ago, was dragged over. He was still wearing pajamas under his white coat.

Caitlyn didn't even know how she ended the call. How could I possibly have only one kidney?Someone must have tampered with things while I was in prison."Investigate."She pushed open her secretary's office door. Her voice was hoarse."What exactly happened to Ian during those three years in prison?"Her secretary froze for a moment and immediately stood up.Caitlyn didn't sit down. She paced back and forth around the office."I personally spoke to the prison warden back then. I told them to take care of him."It sounded like she was trying to convince herself. She believed no one would dare hurt her husband.Where did that kid who called me Dad come from?Could she know something about me?Caitlyn's secretary's fingers hovered over the keyboard. She carefully spoke."Dr. Sullivan, I found something about that kid.""Speak.""The girl's name is Millie. She's four years old."The secretary gulped."She isn't Mr. Sheppard's biological daughter."Caitlyn stopped walkin

My body moved before my mind could react.I lunged at Mason and grabbed him by his throat."How dare you? She was your biological mother!"Mason leaned against the wall. His eyes turned red as he laughed."So what if we were switched at birth? I was born to be rich. Why should she come looking for me? Who does she think she is?"Ian, anyone who treated you well deserved to die."Warm liquid gushed out from my nose.It seemed I didn't have much time left.Fine. I'd take someone down with me.My face was violently slapped to the side. I crashed into the wall.Caitlyn stood where she was. Slowly, she lowered her hand."Are you done?"Mason's health was ruined because he saved me. You only spent a few years in prison for him. What exactly are you complaining about?"You'll always be my husband. With that title, who would dare say anything to you?"She paused before gently wiping the blood from the corner of my mouth with her fingertip. Her voice softened."Mason took care of
