His face turned deathly pale, his eyes filled with terror and regret.

Without hesitation, he shoved Jennifer aside and bolted toward the door.

Jennifer gasped, nearly losing her balance. She wanted to ask what was happening, but before she could, Patrick had already sprinted out of the dining hall. Confusion and unease swirled in her heart as she hurried after him—

Only to be met with a scene that shook her to the core.

Patrick’s steps were frantic and unsteady as he staggered toward his daughter. He ripped off his jacket and wrapped it tightly around her small, motionless body which lay in a pool of blood. His tears streamed down, falling onto his daughter’s bloodstained face.

At that moment, it was as if his entire world had collapsed.

"Mommy, is Daddy… crying for me?" She curled up in my arms, tilting her head up, eyes filled with confusion and innocence. "Mommy, does Daddy regret it? Why is he crying?"

Her gaze, like a deep and endless spring, reflected my face with painful

Just as I arrived, I overheard Jennifer speaking to Johnny, "Last time, I told you to frame that wench. I clearly said you needed to shed a little blood to make it look like a real heart condition, but you were too afraid of the pain."If I hadn’t been smart enough to bribe the doctor into exaggerating your illness, how else could we have gotten that woman to give up her heart for you? Do you really think Patrick would keep indulging you forever?"I’m warning you—if you don’t start listening to me, I won’t forgive you!"After saying this, she viciously kicked Johnny’s frail body, sending him crashing to the floor.Having vented her frustration, Jennifer casually adjusted her appearance. She pretended to be gentle, straightening the slightly askew birthday hat on Johnny’s head, and spoke in a sickeningly sweet tone, "Baby, when you see Daddy Patrick later, remember to be good. Make sure he doesn’t get too upset. Cling to him and remind him that today is your birthday. Ask him to sta

After speaking, I drifted toward the living room with Nina.In the living room, the police were questioning Patrick about me."Mr. Hart, after an in-depth investigation, we found that your wife's wounds were not properly stitched. The wounds were left exposed, and she died from the unbearable pain."I really don’t understand. As the wife of the powerful Hart Corporation’s head, how did she end up dead in a rundown rental apartment? Her cause of death was an untreated wound that led to infection and complications. Can you give us a reasonable explanation?"The officer's voice grew louder, filled with intense suspicion.Patrick’s face turned ashen at those words. I knew that expression too well—he must have remembered the ugly truth from the past."Officer, I divorced Winnie half a month ago though I can't disclose the specific reasons."But you must have made a mistake about the wound. I did ask Winnie to donate her heart, but I also arranged for an artificial heart to be install

Jennifer gently tried to persuade him as well, "Patrick, Lily is right. What’s done is done. Right now, we need to get through this first."Patrick stared blankly at Jennifer, his voice hoarse and broken as he said, "I caused Nina’s death. And now, like a coward, I’m trying to hide her away. She will never forgive me."A flicker of disgust flashed in Jennifer’s eyes, but she quickly suppressed it."Nina has always been an obedient and understanding child. Her love for you runs deep in her bones. She will surely understand that everything you’re doing is for the good of this family."Standing beside me, my daughter scrunched up her tiny face, full of disdain."After everything he’s done, he can forget about my forgiveness!"Desperate for any lifeline, Patrick latched onto Jennifer’s words. A trace of self-deceiving relief flickered in his eyes."Yes, you’re right. Nina has always been the most considerate toward me. She wouldn’t hold this against me."Hearing this, Lily immediat

The dinner plate was overturned and crashed onto the floor with a piercing noise.Patrick’s hands trembled uncontrollably, his phone nearly slipping from his grasp. He roared in fury, "What the hell are you talking about? What rental apartment? Are you messing with me? Do you have a death wish?"The person on the other end seemed unfazed as if already accustomed to such reactions. Ignoring the man’s agitation, they spoke in a solemn tone, "Mr. Hart, please remain calm. This is the city police department. We received a report about a foul odor coming from a rental unit and discovered the body of a young woman who had been deceased for three days."The deceased has been identified as your wife, Winnie. Her daughter, Nina, is currently missing. If you have any information, please inform us immediately."Patrick was so shocked by the news that his phone slipped from his grasp and crashed onto the floor. His bloodshot eyes locked onto Lily as he demanded, "Lily, did you hear what they j

Nina immediately opened her mouth to defend herself."I didn’t take it, I—"Before she could finish, Patrick roughly grabbed her by the ear, his eyes full of disappointment. "The moment you came back, I knew you were up to no good! Just like your scheming mother—stealing now, are you? Tell me, where did you hide it? Don’t make me search you!"The sudden accusation made my mind go blank. I instinctively rushed to protect my daughter, screaming at Patrick. How dare he hurt my child? Did he really believe everything Jennifer said?Nonetheless, I was just a formless spirit. No one could hear my fury.Nina clutched her ear, tears streaming down as she pleaded, "I didn’t take Aunt Jennifer’s bracelet! Mommy didn’t teach me to steal! She’s lying! She’s a bad person! Don’t believe her!"Her tearful defense only fueled Patrick’s fury. He ordered her to kneel, then told Jennifer to search her. With a triumphant smile, Jennifer pounced like a vulture, tearing at Nina’s dress."Where did y
