Chapter 3

Author: Nancy Hart
I saw through Esther's intentions immediately, but I didn't let it show. Gently freeing myself from her embrace, I said, "Next week is the company's celebration dinner. I'll make the announcement then."

Esther's eyes lit up. She quickly concealed her excitement and faked an affectionate tone. "Once Jon takes over the company, you won't be as busy anymore. Then, we can travel abroad together and relax."

I watched her performance with quiet amusement and said nothing.

Soon, the day of the company's dinner arrived. The venue was packed and lively. I stepped onto the stage to deliver my speech. Near the end, I announced that Jonathan would be taking over the company, then signed the share transfer documents on the spot.

As thunderous applause erupted throughout the hall, William suddenly walked onto the stage and headed straight toward me. He took out a paternity test report and handed it to me.

"Years ago, I also tried to have a child through IVF," he said. "But the hospital mixed up our samples. Jon is my biological son. Give him back to me."

The entire room erupted in shock. People immediately began whispering among themselves.

"How could this happen? Mr. Barkley raised Jonathan and turned him into a brilliant businessman. I can't imagine how much effort that must've taken."

"His uncle is actually his biological father? This is insane!"

"Mr. Barkley just handed the company over to Jonathan, and now this guy suddenly shows up claiming Jonathan's his son. Doesn't that seem a little convenient?"

Jonathan stood frozen in place, unable to believe what he was hearing.

I looked at William and smiled calmly. "If Jonathan is your son, then I'll return him to you."

My parents hurried onto the stage. "Sean, let's investigate this properly before making any decisions."

"Exactly. How could Jon possibly be William's son? The procedure was done in a legitimate hospital. There has to be some kind of mistake. Maybe that paternity test is fake."

"There's no need to investigate," I said flatly. "Jon really is William's biological son. I had a paternity test done when he was born. We're not related by blood."

William stared at me in disbelief. "You did a paternity test the moment Jon was born?"

The crowd was equally stunned. They couldn't understand my reasoning. If I'd known from the start that Jonathan wasn't my son, why had I raised him as my own, and even handed him the company's shares?

Someone asked, "Mr. Barkley, if you already knew Jonathan wasn't your son, why did you keep it a secret? Why raise him as your own?"

William said with disdain, "Isn't it obvious? He couldn't have children himself, so he wanted to keep my son for his own. Luckily, I found out the truth and got my son back."

Esther walked up to me and slapped me across the face. "Sean Barkley, I never looked down on you because you couldn't have children. The hospital mixing up the samples was an accident. But you lied to me all these years and treated me like a fool. I want a divorce!"

I knew exactly why she was striking first. She wanted to hide her own guilt and use the opportunity to ask for a divorce.

"Esther, everyone else may not know the real reason why we couldn't have children, but you do."

A flicker of panic flashed in her eyes. She couldn't even meet my eyes.

Staring at her, I spoke clearly. "The reason we couldn't have children wasn't that I was infertile. It was because you put drugs in my milk every single day!"

Esther froze. When she recovered, she protested in a panic. "I did no such thing! Don't blame your own problems on me."

William stepped forward to defend her. "I know my sister better than anyone. She would never do something like that."

I looked at him and laughed. "Of course you know her well. You've been sharing a bed with her this whole time."

William's face instantly went pale. He lowered his head and put on a hurt expression. "Sean, I know you're upset because I've taken Jon back, but you can't slander us like this. Esther and I are innocent."

Esther glared at me furiously. "Will is my brother. Stop trying to ruin his reputation. The hospital mixed up the IVF samples. It's not Will's fault."

Below the stage, several employees who happened to be Esther's relatives immediately chimed in.

"Yeah. They're siblings. There's no way they'd have that kind of relationship."

"He's just bitter because William is taking Jonathan back, so now, he's trying to smear his name!"

The more they talked, the more worked up they got. One of them picked up a slice of cake from the table and hurled it at me. "Sean, you're shameless!"

"You've gone too far! The Small family isn't one you should offend!"

Esther and William watched me with smug expressions, as though they thought victory was already in their hands.

But I remained calm, looking at them with a cold smile.

I had tolerated them for years. Today, it was finally time to settle the score.

When my parents found out I'd been kidnapped, they immediately agreed to Esther's demands. While we waited, Esther grew increasingly agitated. She was afraid my parents would call the cops and worried she wouldn't get the money. She glared at me and snapped, "Call your parents again. Ask them where they are. Why aren't they here yet?"I frowned at her. "They'll be here." After a brief pause, I added, "Why don't you untie me first? Don't worry. I won't run. You'll get your money."Esther suddenly flew into a rage and kicked me as hard as she could. The chair tipped over with me still tied to it, and I crashed to the floor. Pain shot through my body, and tears welled up in my eyes. She grabbed me by the throat and roared, "I'm warning you. Don't even think about trying anything. If I don't get my money, I'll kill you!"I gritted my teeth and glared at her.Just then, I heard movement at the door. Soon, my parents rushed inside."Esther, don't hurt Sean. We brought the money. L

The next issue I needed to deal with was my marriage to Esther. After killing William, Esther went into hiding. The only thing I could do was hire a lawyer and file for divorce, cutting all ties with her once and for all.One evening, after work, I arrived at the parking garage. Just as I was about to unlock my car, a dark figure suddenly darted out from the shadows. It was Esther. She was covered from head to toe, with a cap pulled low over her face. If I hadn't looked carefully, I might not have recognized her.She grabbed my arm and burst into tears. "Honey, I'm innocent. William deceived me. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?"I coldly pulled my arm away. "Don't call me that. It makes me sick. I've already hired a lawyer and filed for divorce."Hearing that, Esther broke down. She dropped to her knees, crying uncontrollably. "Honey, I really know I was wrong. Please don't be angry with me. We can't get divorced! I want to hide overseas. Give me a million dollars."

William kept dodging, but he still refused to admit anything. "Esther, don't listen to Sean. Believe me. Jon is your son. That report is fake."Esther hesitated for a moment. Seeing her waver, I couldn't help but laugh. "This is exactly why I said you're an idiot, Esther. If the report I gave you is fake, then why don't you take Jonathan for another test yourself?"She stared at me for a long moment. Seeing how confident I was, she realized I wasn't the one lying. Then, she turned back to William and continued kicking and punching him. "You bastard! You're still trying to lie to me? I won't fall for it again. Talk! Whose child is he?"William stubbornly insisted that he was telling the truth.I folded my arms, watching them fight. The resentment that had been lodged in my chest for ages finally eased a little. "Let me answer that for him," I said.Back then, when I discovered that William had deliberately swapped my sample, I was furious. My original plan had been to confron

The recording made it clear that Esther and William had planned everything. Their goal had always been my money.Back when Esther was lying in the hospital bed after giving birth, I had overheard their conversation. They had been together behind my back for years. To get their hands on my fortune, Esther had suggested IVF. Then, William switched my sample with his own. That was how Esther had ended up giving birth to his child. As Jonathan was my only son, everyone naturally assumed he would inherit my company one day.Several employees spoke up indignantly."Those two are absolutely shameless. They used their own child as a pawn just to steal Mr. Barkley's company.""Imagine having parents like that. What terrible luck."Hearing that, William turned toward Jonathan in a panic. "It's not like that, Jon. Let me explain."He reached for Jonathan, but Jonathan took a step back, avoiding him. His lips were pressed into a tight line, and his fists were clenched at his sides. My mom looked at me anxiously. "Sean, what on earth is going on?"I patted her hand reassuringly. "Mom, don't worry."Today, I was going to make them pay for all the years of humiliation and misery they had put me through.I turned to Esther. "Did you really think you and William could keep your affair hidden forever?"My assistant stepped forward and handed me a remote control. I turned on the projector. The giant screen lit up, showing two entwined bodies, their moans filling the room. The people in the video were none other than Esther and William.Esther instantly panicked. "Turn it off!" she screamed. "Turn it off!"William clearly hadn't expected me to have those videos. He rushed toward me, trying to snatch the remote from my hand. But my assistant stepped in and blocked him.Esther shouted furiously, "Sean, what the hell are you trying to do?"The employees began to murmur among themselves."Even if they aren't blood-related, that's still pretty messed up.""This is m
