Chapter 1

Author: Moore
I was holding a pregnancy test in my hand, my heart full of joy as I planned to find Leo Carter and share the unexpected news with him. Instead, I overheard something that shattered me completely.

A month ago, Leo’s older brother had been killed in a violent shoot-out. With his death, the position of the don was forced onto Leo’s shoulders.

Back then, Leo’s mother had desperately begged Ariel Sullivan to stay. “I’ve lost one son. I can’t lose my daughter-in-law, too. You must leave an heir for the Carter family.”

A month later, Ariel was pregnant. I had always believed the child was my brother-in-law’s posthumous heir, but the truth was, the child was Leo’s.

My mind buzzed violently, as if my entire world was spinning. I couldn’t process it or accept it.

Leo was warning his mother in a low voice. “This child is my brother’s posthumous son. Don't ever mention in front of Fawn again that I should marry Ariel. She won’t like it.”

His mother responded reluctantly, her eyes filled with undisguised dissatisfaction toward me. “Why do you love her so much? She can’t even give you a child. You almost ruined your life for her. If I hadn’t secretly drugged you and arranged for you to sleep with Ariel, the Carter family wouldn’t even have a successor by now.”

Leo cut her off, his voice icy. “I won’t pursue the matter of the drugs. And even if Ariel is carrying my child, Fawn will be my one and only wife.”

Immediately after, his phone rang. He answered it, and his expression changed instantly.

“Ariel isn’t feeling well. I’ll take her to the doctor.”

I watched him leave in a hurry. Behind me, Leo’s mother smiled with satisfaction.

“And he says he has no feelings for her,” she said softly. “Look at how nervous he is. He’s already fallen for her.”

I leaned against the wall, forcing myself to stay calm, but the hand holding the pregnancy test was shaking uncontrollably.

Logic told me that pretending I knew nothing was the best choice. Leo would never let me discover the truth, and if I acted ignorant, I could remain his cherished, protected wife. However, I knew I would never be able to do that.

The naked truth suffocated me, and I staggered away quietly, not alerting anyone.

Three years ago, my parents died in a violent mafia fight. Since then, Leo had become my only family. I gave up my inheritance from the Jossa family to marry him, believing he would be my strongest support, my unshakable anchor. Yet, in the end, he betrayed me.

I called my late father’s former secretary. After my parents’ deaths, all of the Jossa family’s assets had been managed by him. He had been nothing but loyal to my father.

“In three days,” I said quietly, “I’m leaving Leo and returning to the family. I want you to erase all traces of my whereabouts.”

My father’s secretary, Mr. Will Harmon, was stunned.

“Why? Leo loves you so much. If he can’t find you, he’ll go insane.”

My lips curled into a bitter smile.

“He won’t,” I said softly. “He’ll have a new wife. And he’s about to become a father. Before long, he’ll forget about me.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

Finally, Mr. Harmon sighed. “I never thought Leo would betray you… But don’t be sad. Everything in the Jossa family belongs to you. In three days, I’ll have everything prepared and personally hand it over to you.”

I was just about to thank him when a low, familiar voice suddenly sounded behind me.

“Who’s about to become a father?”

Will glared at him, his anger finally exploding.“For the past two years, Fawnie has blocked out the past. In fact, she wishes she’d never met you,” he snapped. “You were involved with two women at the same time. You even locked her in a dark, damp basement and almost got her and the child killed. After everything you’ve done, how do you have the nerve to come looking for her?”Leo’s face darkened instantly. Every word Will said stabbed him straight in the heart. The humiliation and frustration boiling inside finally exploded. With a furious roar, he swung his fist at Will. However, he had underestimated Will, who had grown up in bloodshed and violence. In just a few swift moves, Will beat Leo until he was barely conscious, curling up on the floor in agony. Will had wanted to hit Leo for a long time. Now that Leo had delivered himself right to his doorstep, Will couldn’t stop. He only halted when I finally spoke.“Will, that’s enough.”Leo lifted his head, hope flickering in his e

The news that the Jossa family had a Donna spread through the country like wildfire. Every rival faction stirred, eager to test our strength and gauge our weaknesses. Only the Carter family remained silent. Everyone knew that the Don of the Carter family had lost his mind. Ever since his wife died in that tragic fire, he had locked up his brother’s widow, torturing her so cruelly that she even lost a child. The incident caused a major upheaval within the Carter family. The old loyalists of the former Don clashed violently with Leo’s supporters, and the family descended into chaos. His mother, devastated by grief, suffered a stroke and required long-term care in a rehab facility. When Will brought the news to me, he watched my reactions cautiously. I, however, remained calm, leaning back in my chair as we discussed work matters. After briefing him thoroughly, Will finally hesitated and asked, “Ms.– No, Fawn. Do you still have feelings for him?”I smiled, my expression calm and unt

After Will brought me back to Casetta, the emotional shock hit me all at once. That very night, I came down with a severe fever. I was unconscious for an entire day and night and nearly lost my child. Will stayed by my side the whole time. He barely slept, his eyes bloodshot, his face drawn and exhausted. When I finally woke up, he even managed to joke with me.“Ms. Jossa,” he said, “if you had slept any longer, I’d be taking my men to wipe out Leo’s territory.”He hated Leo for betraying me and for hurting me this badly.I shook my head weakly. “There’s no need. From now on, he and I have nothing to do with each other. Just take him as a stranger.”Will was silent for a moment before letting out a quiet sigh. “As you wish, Ms. Jossa.”“Call me Fawn, Willie,” I said.I looked straight at him, stubbornly waiting for him to change how he addressed me. He gave in quickly. In a voice so soft it was almost inaudible, he called my name.I smiled, this time, genuinely.“You’re not an

After Leo was discharged from the hospital, he returned to the burned-out villa. In less than seven days, he looked as if he had aged ten years. His clothes hung loosely on his frame, empty and lifeless. The villa remained exactly as it had been after the fire. No one was allowed inside. He insisted on handling my remains personally. The collapsed entrance to the underground basement was quickly cleared away, leaving behind a single, pitch-black opening. Suppressing his grief, Leo stepped down into the basement, one step at a time.Suddenly, he froze. Near a doorframe that hadn’t been completely burned, he bent down and picked up a small scrap of paper. Only one corner remained intact. It was part of the divorce papers.Leo’s eyes widened, and he stood there, stunned. He remembered that day—how I had handed him a document. It made him wonder if I had already been thinking about divorcing him back then. “No… that’s impossible,” he muttered, shaking his head violently. “Fawn loves

The ambulance rushed the injured to the hospital. Leo’s mother arrived shortly after, panic written all over her face. When she saw Leo barely clinging to life, she broke down in tears.“Leo, you have to accept reality,” she cried. “Fawn is dead! There’s no way anyone could’ve survived in that basement. Stop searching for her!”Half of Leo’s arm had been severely burned, wrapped tightly in thick layers of bandages. Yet, he sat on the hospital bed like a man who had lost his soul, staring blankly into space. He had experienced what it felt like to be burned alive, and knowing I was someone who would cry out in pain from nothing more than a small cut from a fruit knife, he couldn’t fathom how I could ever endure pain like that. If he hadn’t locked me in there, I would never have suffered such agony. Regret gnawed at him relentlessly, torturing him every single second. Meanwhile, Ariel arrived at the hospital carrying a fruit basket. She was dressed in a pure white dress, the slight

When the fire spiraled out of control, Leo was in the room with Ariel, accompanying her through some prenatal exercises.By the time the butler rushed in to report the situation, Leo was frowning in irritation.“It’s just a small fire,” he snapped. “Can’t you handle something like this on your own? What is the private security I pay a fortune for doing? Standing around?”“But, sir–” The butler was drenched in sweat, wiping his forehead again and again with a handkerchief. “But the madam is still in the basement. The fire is too intense. Our men can’t get in to rescue her–”“What did you just say?”Leo’s face drained of color. Ignoring Ariel calling out to him from behind, he stumbled forward and ran toward the basement.“Don, don’t be reckless!” someone shouted. “The flames inside are out of control. No one can survive it!”However, Leo didn’t listen. He kept trying to charge into the inferno. Luckily, the butler reacted fast, desperately grabbing Leo before he could plunge into
