Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
“Garbage belongs with garbage. That’s the only way to stay clean!”

Travis jumped in a panic. His tailored suit was now covered in dirt.

Vanessa was dumbfounded. She stared at me blankly for a moment before she finally reacted.

She began brushing the filth off Travis’ clothes while scolding me, “Stephen, are you out of your mind? You’re just jealous that Travis is more capable than you, so you’re deliberately targeting him!”

I shrugged and let out a cold smirk, “Quit with the self-delusions. I’m not jealous of a loser. And stop bossing me around. You’re not even worthy of it!”

Vanessa’s face flushed red with anger. She seemed ready to argue further, but I had already turned around and walked away casually.

I wandered along the path, trying to clear my mind. Before I knew it, I found myself in front of a small coffee shop.

I stared at the sign for a moment, then unconsciously went in and ordered a cup of coffee.

This was the place where Vanessa and I had first met.

Back in freshman year, a senior in our club was celebrating his birthday and invited the members for coffee.

I was from a rural background and my family was extremely poor. I was quiet, sensitive, and insecure. However, I did not want to kill the vibe, so I forced myself to go.

Everyone brought expensive gifts for the senior while I clutched my cloth bag tightly.

It contained a few jars of beef sauce my mother had made. Among all the fancy presents, my gift felt completely out of place.

I nervously took a sip of coffee and exclaimed, “Why is it so bitter?”

Instantly, laughter erupted around me. They mocked me for never having drunk coffee, calling me a country bumpkin.

Just as I felt utterly embarrassed, Vanessa stood up and added milk and sugar to my cup.

She even scolded those who were laughing at me, “What’s the big deal? Some people just don’t like black coffee. It’s a matter of taste.”

I realized she was speaking up for me, protecting my dignity.

When we left the coffee shop, she noticed the gift I had not given away and asked about it.

Embarrassed, I took out the jars of beef sauce. She did not mind at all. She even opened one and said it tasted great.

She explained the flavors of different types of coffee and asked if I liked the one I just drank.

Even with the milk and sugar, the coffee was still bitter, but inside, I felt warm.

I nodded and said it was good, not telling her the truth.

Later, I learned Vanessa was in the same major as me.

She came from the mountains and, through her hard work, got into this university. Perhaps because of our similar backgrounds, we developed a quiet bond and grew close.

Her confidence and composure drew me in like sunlight in the middle of a cold winter.

Over the days we spent together, I fell for her. I sank in deeper and deeper, unable to pull myself away.

I finally gathered the courage to confess during the university sports meet.

Yet, fate had other plans. Vanessa fainted on the track due to low blood sugar. I rushed her to the infirmary and handed her the candy I always carried. I then ran to the store to get her water.

By the time I returned, Travis had stolen the credit and even taken the opportunity to confess to her.

When I saw her face light up with happiness, I could only step back and support her as a friend.

Still, I never expected that Travis’ feelings for her were not genuine. It was not long before he broke up with her. He told her that his parents were abroad and that she was nothing more than a toy to him.

“Vanessa, stop following me. If you’re hoping I’ll help you pay off your debts, you might as well give up on that idea now.”Vanessa stepped forward and grabbed my hand. She shook her head in a panic, explaining, “No, no, it’s not that, Stephen. I didn’t come to ask you to pay off my debts. I’ll figure that out myself. I just wanted to apologize… I’m sorry.”I was slightly frozen for a moment. The usually proud Vanessa was actually bowing her head in apology. However, an apology could never make up for the hurt she had caused me.Vanessa noticed my silence and continued, “Stephen, it’s my fault for not listening to your warnings, for mistakenly thinking that bastard Travis was a good person.“And it’s also my fault for loving the wrong person from the very beginning. Only when you gave me that candy did I realize the only person I’ve ever truly loved all these years was you.“Stephen, please give me a chance. Can we start over?”Vanessa clutched my hand tightly, but I coldly pul

“Stephen, where did this candy come from? I’m asking you, where did this candy come from?”I did not understand why Vanessa was so agitated at this moment. I just answered calmly, “I made it myself.”I had a sweet tooth, so I sometimes made desserts like chocolates, candies… All of that. However, Vanessa preferred stronger flavors and spicy foods. After I got together with her, I stopped making sweets. Since I had some free time recently, I resumed this little hobby.Vanessa stared at me blankly. There was a trace of sorrow in her eyes. Even though she was looking at me, her thoughts seemed to drift far away. She lowered her head weakly, staring at the creases in the blanket she had caused, and asked in a flat, emotionless tone, “Travis, when I fainted during the freshman sports meet, was it really you who carried me to the infirmary?”Travis’ face flickered with guilt.“Y-Yes… It was me. Why are you bringing up something so long ago?”Vanessa let out a cold laugh and repli

I recognized those people. They were from the product development teams of five other companies. One of them grabbed Vanessa by the arm and said, “Finally found you! Now that there’s an issue with the product, the entire production line is collapsing, and there’s a bunch of leftover stock.“Your company will be fully responsible for all the damages, and you’ll have to cover all the compensation!”I furrowed my brows in shock when I heard that. Travis had only managed to produce a prototype. The official production was two weeks away, yet he had arrogantly skipped any checks and, using his authority as the chief, jumped straight into production.Vanessa hesitated for a moment before asking, “How could this happen? And how much are we talking about for the compensation?”One of the team leaders answered, “Preliminary estimates are 50 million… plus…”Vanessa had not even finished listening when her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed straight to the ground. She had fainted from th

It finally hit me. Vanessa thought I was jealous.Perhaps she figured I regretted something and could not let her go, so I even followed her all the way to the gala.I frowned. She really did overthink things. She was way too full of herself.I explained calmly, “I’m here at tonight’s gala to pitch for an investment with Mr. Lane from Amirate.”For a moment, Vanessa laughed like she had just heard the funniest joke, doubling over and clutching her stomach. She mocked, “Stephen, don’t be ridiculous. You’re here to pitch for investment? Last I checked, no one has even hired you.”Travis chimed in, “Stephen, I had no idea things were this tough for you. No need to be embarrassed, and don’t try to bluff your way through it. After all, you took care of Vanessa for so many years. If you ask, I could probably lend you some money. I’m sure Vanessa wouldn’t want to see you going hungry either.”Vanessa shot me a look full of disgust and sneered, “Who’d feel sorry for him? Travis, it’s onl

“Stephen, I was just testing you earlier, giving you a chance out of the goodness of my heart. I didn’t expect you to be so ungrateful!“Oh well. Anyway, the company now has a genius like Travis. Whether you come back or not makes no difference.”I smiled casually, knowing full well that Travis’ so-called accomplishment was nothing more than a lucky fluke. The final material for this product was complex, and the formula was not something anyone could just stumble upon. When I was working on it, I experimented with more than a dozen formulations. I finally narrowed it down through repeated trials to the one correct combination. If Travis acted so recklessly, it could easily lead to irreversible consequences.Vanessa was completely lost in her dream of making big money. Even if I warned her, she would not listen. At the thought of this, I decided to show her the door.“We’re getting divorced. You’ve got no business being here.”Vanessa rose to her feet. Her face was flushed with

“W-What? Five million? You must be kidding. There has to be some mistake!”Vanessa was stunned. Her hands shook so badly. However, before she could finish, the caller had already hung up. She suddenly snapped her head toward me. Her eyes froze on me, and she was seething with uncontrollable rage.“Stephen, are you the one causing trouble behind the scenes? This product was supposed to be a guaranteed success! How could things go this wrong?”I gave her a smile and waved her off casually. “You’re overthinking it. What’s it got to do with me? But that product does get inspected regularly. If it doesn’t show any breakthroughs, the chief will have to take full responsibility.“Today marks the very last day to meet the deadline.”Vanessa opened her mouth again, but time was slipping away. She grabbed Travis’ hand like he was her last lifeline.“Travis, I can only count on you now. We have to get to the headquarters. We can’t waste a second.”The two of them rushed out in a panic.I
