Chapter 1

The moment my breath stopped, I drifted into the air and followed the ambulance back to the hospital.

The ward was brightly lit. It was filled with warmth.

My fiance, Kelvin Shaw, crouched beside the hospital bed and cradled my younger sister, Delila Lane’s, wrist with tender care. His gaze brimmed with concern.

“Stop crying, okay? The doctor said it’s just a superficial wound. It won’t leave any scars.”

Delila snuggled deeper into his embrace. Her eyes were filled with tears.

“Kelvin, I was so scared... When the car crashed, I thought I was going to die.”

Mom and Dad stood guard on either side of the bed.

Mom tenderly stroked Delila’s cheek, then shot a furious glare at the air.

“It’s all Carol’s fault! If she hadn’t been driving so recklessly, how could this have happened?”

Dad slammed his fist on the table. His face darkened.

“I always told her she’s a terrible driver, but she insisted on proving herself! Now look at what she’s done. She’s caused Delila so much trauma!”

“Exactly!”

Mom chimed in immediately while tenderly stroking Delila’s hair.

“Delila grew up sheltered and pampered. How could she endure this? That nasty Carol has always competed with Delila for attention. I suspect she caused Delila’s injury on purpose!”

I froze. My soul trembled.

It was not my fault! I swear it was not my fault!

Before the brakes failed, Delila had been seated in the passenger seat. She had grabbed the steering wheel from me.

She thought I was driving too slowly and had insisted on taking over. In the struggle, the car spun out of control and plunged down the hillside!

I fought desperately to steady the car while yanking the airbag release, only to find mine could not be deployed at all. That was why I had suffered such severe injuries.

How could they… How could they pin everything on me?

My mouth opened. I was desperate to scream and fight back.

But my voice did not reach their ears.

I could only watch helplessly as they traded accusations, pinning all the blame squarely on me.

Delila nestled into Kelvin’s embrace. A barely visible smirk of satisfaction creased her mouth before she instantly shifted to a look of hurt.

Kelvin comforted her for a while before suddenly standing up, as if he had just remembered something.

“Right, what about Carol? She seemed pretty badly hurt on the mountain earlier. I should go check on her.”

Mom and Dad nodded, but their expressions were dismissive. “She didn’t even bleed as much as Delila. They must’ve sent another ambulance for her. She’s just too ashamed to contact us now.”

“Don’t mind her. Go see her if you want.”

The moment the words left their mouths, Delila suddenly cried out in feigned distress. “I’m still in so much pain! Kelvin, could you ask the doctor to prescribe some painkillers for me?”

Kelvin’s steps halted. “Please ask your parents to handle it. I’d like to check on Carol. She just...”

Mom pulled Kelvin closer, while Dad gently patted his shoulder.

“As her parents, we know Carol best.

“She might have staged this accident to grab attention to herself. Her narcissism only ended up hurting Delila so badly!

“Let’s not visit her. It’ll teach her a lesson. Let’s show her that playing these tricks won’t work!”

Kelvin hesitated. His gaze landed on Delila’s pale, dainty face.

Just then, Delila suddenly let out a sob and seemed to nearly faint.

She leaned against Kelvin’s shoulder. Her voice was soft and innocent.

“Mom, Dad, please don’t blame Carol... She probably just hates me, that’s why she purposely zoned out while driving... She may call me the most useless person in this family, but I don’t blame her, really…”

I hated her? I zoned out while driving?

I felt a chill run straight from my feet to the top of my head. My soul trembled.

It was her! She grabbed the wheel! She ruined me!

But no one heard my screams.

After hearing her words, Kelvin’s worries vanished completely and were replaced by deep disgust.

He gritted his teeth and muttered under his breath, “What a vicious woman.”

Mom and Dad agreed. They cursed me as a born heartless villain.

While floating in midair, my heart felt crushed into pieces.

Just then, Mom’s phone rang sharply.

She answered impatiently. Right after she said “Hello,” her face drained of color.

The evidence was irrefutable. Delila had no room to defend herself. As the police led her away, she continued to wail hysterically. She claimed her parents favored me, accused me of stealing her things, and insisted that Kelvin only ever had eyes for me.To those listening, her words sounded utterly ridiculous. As she was forcibly dragged out, her shrill cries grew fainter and fainter until they vanished completely in the cold wind. The farce ended, and the guests departed with pitiful sighs.Only Mom, Dad, and Kelvin remained standing before my memorial photograph.Kelvin placed a diary and a small voice recorder from my room in front of them.“I found these in Carol’s room. Perhaps you should listen to this.”They turned on the recorder, and Delila’s voice filled the room. “So what if I framed you? Mom and Dad still believe me.“I’ll be Mom and Dad’s only precious daughter. Sooner or later, I’ll kick you out of this house!”Mom clutched her hair in anguish and kept repea

Delila’s face was pale. Her whole body trembled. She clung to her parents, tears streaming down her face as she had done before, while begging them over and over to believe her.Kelvin frowned and shook his head in disappointment.“Even now, you’re still trying to wriggle out of it.”With that, he projected a USB drive onto the makeshift screen. “The dashcam footage has been recovered. The truth will be revealed shortly.”The final moments before my death was replayed, scene by scene. Delila’s shrill cry of “I want you dead!” echoed in everyone’s ears.My parents froze in place. Their blood seemed to have frozen solid.Mom snapped out of it first and staggered toward Delila. Her voice was trembling.“Tell me! Why did you hurt Carol? She’s your own sister!”Delila gasped for breath as she was gripped, terror filling her eyes.“Mom... I didn’t... She forced me... Carol picked on me first...”“Picked on you?!”Dad’s voice erupted suddenly. It was filled with unprecedented fu

The sky hung heavy and gray as they claimed my body. They held the funeral at a church near our home.White candles illuminated my photo. It had been taken on my eighteenth birthday, and was the only picture in the house that belonged solely to me.Mom and Dad sat in the corner dressed in black. They did not wail, but silently shed tears with heads bowed.Mom’s voice was hoarse as she murmured memories of the past.“Remember when Carol was little? She’d always run after me. When I baked bread in the kitchen, she’d sit beside me, saying she’d build me a house out of bread when she grew up...”Dad’s eyes reddened too. He sighed. His voice was heavy with regret.“That year, I caught a fever from the rain and lost my appetite. She braved the storm to buy me a strawberry cake, only to come down with a high fever herself for three days...“She was just six back then. She fully believed that strawberry cake was the best thing in the world.”Mom wiped her tears and choked out a few wo

Mom and Dad froze in place, stunned by Kelvin’s outburst. Their expressions instantly stiffened.Kelvin’s eyes were red. His voice was thick with suppressed sobs.“Carol is in trouble now, and you’re still arguing about this?“If you didn’t love her, why did you bring her into this world? Why the favoritism?”He reached out and pointed at the family portrait in the living room. In it, only Delila was smiling.“On the day of the accident, I took Delila away. Shouldn’t you have gone to check on Carol’s condition?“Now, the rescue team is saying she’s dead, and you can’t even be bothered to confirm it. You just think she’s seeking attention!“I’m starting to wonder if Carol is really as worthless as you claim, or… have you never once acknowledged her worth?”Kelvin’s words struck them like a slap across the face.Their expressions flickered, mouths opening and closing, yet not a single word of rebuttal escaped.“If you won’t confirm it, I will!”Kelvin turned to walk out right

The phone clattered to the floor with a sharp crack.Mom froze in place. Her gaze did not leave the shattered screen. Her lips trembled. After a long while, she finally managed to squeeze out a hysterical cry.“Impossible! This can’t be true!”She lunged forward to pick up the phone. Her hands were shaking so violently that she could barely press the buttons.“You’re lying! That accident wasn’t serious! Delila was discharged in perfect health. How could Carol be dead?“On the day of the rescue, she only had a little blood on her chest. That minor injury was nothing!”A voice came from the other end. “Ma’am, we’ve verified the identity. The deceased is indeed Carol. Her chest was pierced by glass... When she was found, she showed no signs of life.”“I don’t believe it!”Mom screamed back into the phone.“Carol must have bribed you! She just wants to scare us and make us suffer! I’ve seen this trick too many times!”Dad frowned and chimed in.“How could she be dead? I bet she

Kelvin did not immediately respond. He only remained silent, as if weighing whether I was truly as vicious as they claimed.Mom and Dad asked Kelvin to stay at home for a few days.Kelvin paused. “But Carol still has not been discharged yet. It’s been a full day. I really should go see her.”Dad cut him off. “Oh, we’re her parents. We’ll visit her. Since she hasn’t contacted us yet, she’s probably feeling too guilty to show up. I heard from the nurses at the hospital that there aren’t many critically ill patients lately.”He hesitated for a long time, then he nodded with downcast eyes.My spirit felt a tug from an invisible thread. I followed Kelvin’s footsteps involuntarily, never straying an inch too far from him.I watched him carry a plate of fruit into Delila’s room. He picked one up with a fork and offered it to her lips.Delila accidentally spilled juice on him, then carefully wiped it off.Their intimate gestures brought out a suggestive atmosphere. I felt countless nee
