Chapter 4

Author: Nora Blythe
Derek gave me a mocking smile and took Jaime’s hand. “Jaime, don’t be mad. It’s okay. Your reputation is what matters most…”

“I don’t care about that.” Jaime cut him off, and her words made my heart tighten.

I knew her better than anyone. She was vain and strong‑willed, yet all her boundaries disappeared when it came to Derek.

At the press conference, the journalists pointed their microphones and cameras at me.

I followed the script and calmly admitted to mistakes that were not mine.

A journalist suddenly asked, “Mr. Sheldon, we heard you were diagnosed with leukemia some time ago. You might not live for more than a month. Would you approve of Ms. Walter and Mr. Surrey being together after your death?”

My sickly expression appeared on the screen.

I was not surprised by the question. As Jaime’s husband, I often had paparazzi around me.

I did not deny anything. I simply smiled. “Yes, I will give them my blessing.”

I did not know which part angered her, but Jaime’s calm expression vanished. She stood up at once and ended the live broadcast.

She turned to me. “What leukemia? I didn’t arrange that question. Did you bribe those journalists?”

Before I could speak, Derek lowered his eyes and tugged at her sleeve. “Jaime, all the viral posts are attacking me. They call me a homewrecker who ruined your marriage, but I knew you first…”

Because of the live broadcast, many people online insulted Derek and called him a shameless homewrecker who lived off women.

Jaime’s face grew darker. She forgot the journalists’ questions and grabbed my still‑healing arm.

The wound reopened under her pull, and drops of blood fell to the floor.

“Joseph, how could you be so despicable? You know Derek is innocent, yet you bribed reporters and hired online trolls. Do you want to ruin his reputation?” Her grip tightened around my wrist with great force.

A sharp cracking sound followed.

Pain washed over me, and a faint taste of blood filled my mouth.

Derek pulled her away and acted generous. “Jaime, it’s alright. I believe Joseph wouldn’t do that.”

He then looked at me with lowered eyes, pretending to be pitiful. “I don’t know how I offended you. Joseph, your marriage to Jaime isn’t worth anything anymore. You can’t make her happy, so why are you stopping us?”

I stepped back. My right hand felt numb. My voice turned cold. “I will not stop you. Not now, and not ever.”

I turned and walked away.

Jaime shouted behind me. “Joseph, I’ll give you a chance. Kneel and apologize to Derek, and I’ll pretend none of this happened.”

I did not stop walking. Her voice grew sharper. “Joseph! Did you hear me?”

Ten years of love and pain slipped away in that moment.

I stood outside the company in the cold wind for a long time before picking up my phone. I called my lawyer. “Please give my medical records and my mother’s death certificate to Jaime. Tell her I repaid what I owed her with two lives.”

Since I said that, Jaime worked even harder. She searched for treatment everywhere and even knelt in a church for an entire day, although she never believed in divine power.Everything she did was in vain.My health worsened day by day, and the doctor issued several critical condition notices.Jaime pleaded beside me. “When you get better, let’s have another wedding. Forgive me. I wasted ten years of your life. I’ll make up for the rest of it, okay?”Her stubbornness left me helpless. “I agreed. As long as you sign the divorce agreement, I’ll go abroad for treatment.”Jaime believed me. She thought that as long as I cooperated with treatment, she could do anything. She signed the divorce agreement without hesitation and booked the earliest flight.I looked at our names on the document and let out a quiet sigh.Jaime was thrilled that I had given in. She smiled the entire day.I turned my head and said slowly, “I might not come back this time. My mom always said we never took a

“Jaime, what are you saying? You want me to leave?”“Don’t play dumb. I investigated everything. You were the one who pushed Joseph off the cliff.”Her attention stayed on me. She did not even look at Derek.Derek’s face turned pale, then red. His voice softened. “I… you always said Joseph and his dead mother held you back, so I thought…”I never imagined Derek truly wanted me dead.“Jaime, you saw it. Joseph has a terminal illness and is dying. Just leave him alone.”His words triggered something in Jaime. She slapped him hard across the face and shouted, “Get out of here. If you do not leave, I will have the lawyer sue you for attempted murder.”Derek’s face swelled at once. He had not expected her to hit him. His mask fell away, and he glared at her with clenched teeth. “You hit me? You hit me for a dying person?”He grabbed a chair and smashed it against the floor.I raised my voice. “This is not the place for you to argue. If you do not leave, I will call the police.”Der

“Treat everything as if it never happened? Sure. I’ll agree to that if you can bring the dead back to life.”Jaime’s lips trembled. She could not say a word.I grew impatient and urged her again. “Don’t worry. I’ll hold on and won’t die as long as we haven’t divorced.”She refused to back down and tugged at my arm. “Come home with me right now. There has to be a way. I swear I’ll find the best doctor in the country to treat you. You can do whatever you want once you get better.”I shook off her hand and answered firmly, “I never planned to get treatment.”My mother was dead, and Jaime could no longer threaten me.I no longer needed to trample on my dignity and beg her like a dog. “During the live broadcast, a journalist asked if I would give you and Derek my blessing after my death. What I said was sincere. I won’t stop you. Not in the past, not now, and not in the future.”“What nonsense are you saying?” My words pushed her to her limit. Her eyes turned red as she grabbed my ha

“She’s unable to take care of herself. Have you ever sent anyone to help her?”My resentment toward Jaime grew stronger with every word I said.I still could not forget the sight of my mother’s rotting body on the floor.Jaime looked confused. She bit her lip and argued without thinking. “It’s none of my business. Your mother was already in poor health and should’ve died long ago. It’s good that she died. Think of it as payment for my mother’s life. I didn’t do anything wrong.”She kept denying everything and used her mother’s death as an excuse.I lowered my head and took out her mother’s medical record from the drawer. My mother left it before she died.My tone turned cold. “Jaime, you knew long ago that your mother’s surgery had a very low chance of success. You kept lying to yourself. Doctors aren’t all‑powerful. They can’t bring the dead back to life. You spent ten years torturing my mother and me, blaming everything on us. Now my mother is dead, and I won’t live much longer

“Hello, I’m talking to you.”I glanced at her with a calm expression. “Why can’t I come back to my own home? If you came here to demand an explanation, you can leave now. I still need to teach my students.”Jaime pressed her lips together and took a deep breath. “Okay. I’ll wait until you finish your lessons.”This was the first time in a long while that she gave me space. She usually started arguing right away. The sun had already set by the time I finished work.Jaime always called this place a remote village. Every minute here felt like torture to her.I thought she would not be able to stand it and would leave. To my surprise, she waited outside my office door. When she saw me, she stood up at once and hurried to my side. “Joseph, you still haven’t told me what happened. Did your mother really die?”I stopped walking and looked at her. A cold laugh escaped me. “My mother died. Isn’t that what you wanted? Your mother’s so‑called killer finally paid the price. Are you satisfi

Three days passed before I received another call from Jaime. The message my lawyer delivered must have angered her. The moment I answered, her sharp voice filled my ear. “Joseph, what are you planning? What do you mean by having your lawyer say those things to me? Do you think fake medical records and a fake death certificate will make me feel sorry for you? I’m telling you, the more you do this, the more I despise you. Where are you? Get back here right now.”I expected her reaction. I lowered my gaze and spoke calmly. “They aren’t fake. The medical record is real, and my mother died for real. She died at home because she had no miracle drug for a month, and I didn’t even see her before she passed. I have advanced leukemia, and the hospital that diagnosed me is in the city center. If you don’t believe me, you can send someone to check. My only request now is to divorce you.”Silence followed. Jaime’s breathing grew uneven. “What… what are you talking about? That’s impossible.
