Chapter 4 Leaving

Author: Nameless
His eyes swept across the crowd like a searchlight, and they fell on me.

"Some of you flout discipline and rules just because they think they're smart. Here's a word of advice: it's not easy being number one. Sooner or later, someone will replace you!"

Discussion spread among the crowd, and all eyes fell on me. George loved how this was playing out, and he announced, "And now, our brilliant student and valedictorian runner-up, Leslie Zimmer, will be giving his speech."

Leslie straightened his uniform and strutted up the stage before taking the mic. He adjusted his thick glasses, scanned the crowd, and looked at me with disdain.

"There's no shortcut when it comes to studying. You work for every mark on your paper. The people who think they're above the rules just because they know a trick or two is an insult to the people who've worked hard. The real fight, a fair fight, is just beginning!"

Thunderous applause followed. I watched this D-rate show dispassionately. Once the pep talk was over, George found his way to the corridor and stopped me.

Meanwhile, Leslie followed him like a triumphant rooster.

George had one hand behind his back, and he looked down at me. "Finn, in order to make sure you study like a real student and return to the right path, Leslie will be tutoring you from today onward."

Before I could say anything, Leslie quickly spoke up. "I'll share all my notes with you, Finn! I'll make sure you catch up with everyone else!"

George gave an approving nod and pointed at the books I was holding. "Also, hand over all those stupid books. You're a senior, so act like one. Don't waste your time on meaningless stuff."

These books included the latest edition of On Quantum Field Theory and writings about string theory. The former was one I'd asked someone to send me from overseas.

I looked at his hand, then at his face. His expression seemed to say only one thing. 'This is for your own good.'

The last of my hope was gone. I said nothing as I handed over my books.

"That's more like it." He happily patted the spines of the books as if they were his spoils of war.

I left without even spending another moment of my time on them.

That night, the dorm room was filled with snores.

I sat on my bed with the lights off. The silvery moonlight shone on the silhouettes of my sleeping roommates.

This place was suffocating, so I quietly opened up my suitcase and started packing up. I tossed my books, clothes, notebook, and my notes George thought were useless into the suitcase, not making a single sound in the process.

At three in the morning, everything was packed up.

I looked at the dorm that'd housed me for three years one last time, then I took out a pen and paper to leave one last message on the desk.

It read, 'Here's the fair world you want.'

I slung my backpack and pulled my suitcase as I left the dormitory in silence. I crossed the deserted field alone and disappeared into the night, never to return.

George shivered. He wanted to grasp this thing he thought was a lifeline. "I just wanted the school to be better…"My voice turned colder, and it pierced his weak argument like an icicle. "But your worst mistake was underestimating my value and the price you had to pay for your insistence."You think being fair is to force everyone into the same mold. You took my phone, my books, and forced me into a pointless pep talk and called it help, but really, you were just trying to satiate your need for control and rigid educational ideology."Your insistence on your brand of fairness pushed away a student who could've brought millions and untold glory for your school. Your insistence ruined its reputation and left Mr. Lawson overwhelmed. You disappointed the students and parents who had faith in you. "That's the price you must pay, and can you afford that, Mr. West?"George went pale as a ghost. All the color was gone from his face. He tried to say something, but nothing came out. All

A few days later, I got a text from an unknown number. "Congrats, Finn. And I got into Southern U, thanks."It was from Ivory. I congratulated her and turned my phone off. She was a smart girl, and Peak High's chaos didn't get to her. She firmly secured her own future.I saw Leslie's name in a local newspaper's education section's corner. He only scored enough to get into a mediocre university. He was a nobody in this war for the top scorer spot. The fire he fueled with his jealousy and obsession ended up consuming only him.Samuel held a big celebration for me, and all the influential figures in the city attended. I was the center of the crowd, dealing with all the praises, congratulatory words, and people who wanted to talk to me.When the celebration got to its high point, a small commotion happened at the entrance. I looked up and saw John coming in with another person. He was hunched over, his hair grayed, wearing a faded, worn-out jacket. He was a stark contrast against

"What happened to him?""He couldn't solve the last major question during the math test, and that crushed him. He flunked the following subject. Tore up the paper the day the results were released. He ran out of the classroom crying. Last I heard, he's not even coming to school. His parents are pulling him out."I could imagine Leslie's face that was twisted with jealousy replaced with despair and breakdown. He'd thought of me as his enemy all this time, a stepping stone on his path to greatness. When he stood where I once stood, the pressure crushed him. That wasn't something he saw coming. He didn't lose to me. He lost to an ambition far beyond what his own ability could bear."And George?" That was what I really wanted to hear."He…" Ivory was choosing her words. "He has become the school's public enemy. Mr. Lawson was harshly criticized during the board meeting because of him. The next day, he called a faculty meeting. He simply announced the exam results, then made an annou

Yves and the others thought I was just a genius high schooler who only knew theory, but during our first meeting, I derived the key formula that'd stumped them for three months in thirty minutes. That erased any doubts they had for me.Yves held the papers that were filled with my deduction like it was the Holy Bible. He kept muttering, "Genius. This is genius. It's incredible, the way he thinks…"Harold and Linda quickly started building the physical model and simulating the data according to my theory. There was no noise about fairness here, nor was there any jealousy like Leslie had for me. There was no calculating from John either. All I had to do was think and push my mental abilities to their limits. Our progress jumped by leaps and bounds. …A month later, our first phase was done, and Yves' trembling hands were holding the report. "I think we might actually be changing things, Finn."He insisted that I submit this thesis to an IPhO-affiliated magazine. I was fine eith

John's voice was hoarse and tired. "Finn, I know we failed you. George is far too stubborn when it comes to principles. Please, just come back. I promise you can have all the terms you want. I'll apologize in front of the faculty if I have to!"He was genuine, but my answer came with indifference. I interrupted, "It's too late, Mr. Lawson.""No! We can talk it out if you'll just come back! The school can't go on without you!" He was starting to plead."You're the ones who kicked me out, and now you want me back?" I snickered. "I'm not some sort of toy you can throw out and take back anytime you want. I gave you a chance, remember?"I hung up and blocked him. John tried calling me again, but all he got was a string of beeps. His arm limped, for he knew that his last hope was shattered. Peak High's reputation was on the brink of destruction.I hung up but gleaned no satisfaction. After all, brushing away a speck of dust was hardly something worth feeling satisfied about.…Some

For the first time, George noticed that the respect he once commanded had turned into something cold, unfamiliar, and even filled with resentment.Fear he had never felt before consumed him, encasing him in a frozen coffin. After my departure, the seemingly invincible Peak High began to crumble, and the first cracks came from my former class. No matter what I did, playing games or reading extracurricular books, the other students always felt calm. The sounds of flipping pages and pen against paper were clear, loud, and almost felt like a steady stream. They knew that as long as I was here, the sky was the limit. Now, George had pushed away the one thing that kept them calm.Even the teachers were affected by it. When they hit a snag, they wanted to call my name, but they swallowed it whole.…The atmosphere was awkward. Once classes were over, the usual crowd gathered around my desk, discussing questions with me, was nowhere to be seen.Instead, only depressing silence and qu
