Chapter 2

Author: Space Journey
My phone screen lit up with more than a dozen missed calls.

"Laurent?" I checked the call log and found they were all from his younger brother, Hunter Maddox.

I let out a bitter laugh, realizing I had overestimated my place in Laurent's heart. In our three years of marriage, he had never phoned me that many times.

Right on cue, the phone began to ring again. The moment I swiped to answer, Hunter's abrasive voice came through the receiver.

"Where are you?" he demanded. I've been looking for you all afternoon!"

I rolled my eyes at his blatant lie. Given the timestamps, those 13 missed calls had all been made within a tight ten-minute window, meaning he hadn't spent a second searching for me before that.

Laurent had likely ordered him to track me down in the morning, and Hunter, who had never shown me an ounce of respect, had only just remembered the chore now in the late afternoon.

He was simply trying to cover his tracks with a frantic, last-minute phone bombardment. It was ironic, considering he was the very person who had posted that group photo this morning.

"Don't bother looking for me," I said evenly, matching his hostility with cold indifference. "I've already signed the divorce agreement and left it on the table. Just tell Laurent to sign his part."

Back when I was still trying to make my marriage work, I had gone out of my way to please everyone in Laurent's orbit. This was especially true for Hunter, a spoiled, hot-tempered brat whom I had always treated with gentle patience.

I had never once argued with him, and I even routinely praised his rare good traits in front of the rest of the Maddox family. Yet despite my endless compliance, he had always treated me with malice.

"That divorce threat is a thousand years old, Debbie," Hunter scoffed. "If you actually manage to leave Laurent, I'll become your damn dog!"

He was even more certain than Laurent that I was bluffing.

"Try a different species, Hunter," I countered icily. "Don't insult dogs."

With that, I cut the line and blocked every member of the Maddox family.

My parting insult must have struck a nerve, because Hunter immediately took to our massive shared group chat to blast the news to every wealthy socialite and heir we knew.

Hunter: [Debbie is playing the divorce card again. I told her she'd never actually leave Laurent, and that if she did, I'd be her dog.

[She had the nerve to tell me even dogs don't want me! I'm running the books now: I bet she will come crawling back home within three days.]

The chat blew up instantly. They immediately began placing extravagant wagers on when I would return. Some bet a week, others half a month, and some a full month.

They put up luxury cars, vintage wines, and even six-figure cash sums. I watched the notifications flood the screen, completely detached, until someone tagged me to ask for my timeline so they could fine-tune their bets.

I knew most of the people in the group only through Laurent. Every one of them was a silver-spooned elite born into power and wealth.

Spoiled, these kids had no concept of human decency, or perhaps they simply believed that a woman like me didn't warrant any.

I wasn't a native of Aronespire; I had moved to the city purely for university, fell blindly in love with Laurent, and ultimately stayed because of marriage.

Under Laurent's sharp ambition, the Maddox family had pulled so far ahead of the city's old money over the past few years that they were in a league of their own, cementing them as the wealthiest family in Aronespire.

Yet, despite legally being his wife, I had never truly fit into the upper-crust social circle that revolved around them. I had always been an invisible outsider, and now that I was finally the center of attention, it was only as the punchline of a cruel joke.

But I was dead serious about leaving Laurent. Refusing to waste my breath arguing with any of them, I quietly exited the group chat and began deleting their contacts one by one.

By the time I finished purging my phone, my friends list had shrunk drastically, leaving me with only a handful of people: the ones I'd been close with since before university and a couple of casual friends I'd made locally.

I had lived in Aronespire for seven long years, wasting my youth on a man who didn't care. All I had to show for it was a college diploma and nothing else.

Back in Aronespire, Laurent never expected that the day after he signed the divorce agreement, the proxy representative for the company's new second-largest shareholder would calmly walk into the Maddox Group headquarters.Laurent had never known that the third son of Dawnirabay's most prominent family was my brother. I had never uttered a word about my background.Mikael moved with ruthless efficiency, executing the division of every asset outlined in the settlement and sending the certified paperwork to the notary public.Only then did the reality finally crash down on Laurent: the divorce was serious. He didn't care about the billions or the property holdings in the slightest. He just lunged forward and grabbed Mikael by the arms, his voice tight. "Where is Debbie? Where did she go?""Get your hands off me!" Mikael snapped, shoving him back with disgust. "Who are you to ask? What right do you have to know anything about her?""Where is Debbie?" Laurent persisted, never feeling

Why had I been so foolish back then? Why did I run off to Aronespire for college, only to waste years loving someone incapable of loving me back?My sudden breakdown caught my parents and brothers off guard. Distraught, my mother wrapped her arms tightly around me, letting out a heavy sigh. Now that I'd told the secret locked in my heart for so long, the heavy weight was finally lifted from my chest.Once he heard about the divorce, Elton pulled every string he had to secure the most formidable lawyer in Dawnirabay.Without wasting a moment, the lawyer filed a formal court petition, citing the irretrievable breakdown of our marriage. The process moved astonishingly fast. Within a week, the lawyer had slapped Laurent with a court-issued enforcement notice, demanding his signature on the divorce settlement.Laurent called me the second he got the notice. I had unblocked him during that hospital emergency and forgotten to put him back on the blacklist."It's been two weeks," he gro

Honestly, that was the least of my concerns right now. I just wanted to escape this city and go to my hometown.I stared at Hunter, unyielding. The message in my eyes was simple: "Do exactly what I say."My flight was scheduled for nine o'clock tonight. If we left immediately, I could still make it.Hunter glared back at me for a long, tense moment before waving his hand in exasperated defeat. He stepped forward and gripped my arm to steady me. "Fine. I'll take you there right now."I looked absurd—hobbling on one leg with a crutch in one hand, while my other hand protectively shielded my belly.Hunter didn't say a word during the entire drive to the airport. Neither of us broke the silence until I had finished checking in at the counter. He looked down at me with a rare, complicated expression, his eyes flickering uncomfortably toward my midsection. "You're pregnant, and you're still leaving? Are you... planning on ever coming back?"It was probably the first time he had ever s

"I'm sorry, but given the nature of your injury, you can't sign the consent forms yourself. We need a family member to be present and informed," the nurse said, her expression apologetic but firm.Cheryl was my only real friend here in Aronespire, but she was currently studying abroad. Left with no other choice, I opened my contacts, pulled Laurent out of my block list, and dialed his number. The hospital corridor was crowded, packed with people injured in the multi-car pileup. The moment the call connected, I asked flatly, "Where are you?"Before the words had even fully left my mouth, my gaze drifted down the hallway. There, at the far end of the corridor, I spotted Laurent holding his phone to his ear.Serena was standing right beside him. His eyes were fixed on a doctor wrapping layers of gauze around Serena's finger."At the office," he replied without a second thought. "I have a meeting to get to. If it's nothing urgent, I'm going to hang up."He paused for a beat, then ad

The Maddox family didn't care about my background at all. They simply arranged for us to get the marriage certificate, and Laurent never once asked about my life before him. After we tied the knot, his attitude was freezing. He hated having servants in the house, so I transformed myself from a kitchen novice into a master chef, cooking his meals and managing his household day after day just to earn a shred of warmth.Yet, I never fully trusted him. I bombarded him with daily texts and called to check on his whereabouts whenever I felt insecure. Every time he ignored me, I would threaten divorce, hoping he would coax me to stay.He never did. I would always swallow my pride and crawl back to him. I had been such a lovesick fool, genuinely believing time would spark love. But Serena's return shattered that delusion. I finally realized his coldness wasn't a personality trait; he simply didn't like me.Aronespire held nothing but heartbreak for me now. My plan was simple: finalize the

Just as I had imagined, Laurent's lips were perfect for kissing. That was my first kiss—a clumsy, desperate ambush in a pitch-black room.Somehow, I managed to pin him down, overriding all his attempts to resist. I had no idea where I found that kind of strength, especially since Laurent was always the stronger one after we got married.I breached his defenses, fumbling and inexperienced, pressing closer until I had to cling to his shoulders just to stay upright. By the time I finally pushed him away, I was exhausted and burning up."It's too hot," I slurred, my clothes half-undone. "Take yours off, too."The heat radiating off him made me break out in a sweat. Losing no time, I began running my hands over his chest.Right then, the lounge door was wrenched open. The overhead lights flicked on, blinding me and snapping me back to reality."Debbie Hammond, you really have no shame!" Hunter roared, throwing a suit jacket at me.My eyes flew open. The doorway was packed with guests
