Chapter 3

Autor: Space Journey
After graduation, I jumped straight into marriage with Laurent.

The Maddox family was traditional and despised the idea of their daughter-in-law showing up in the workforce. They demanded I stay home to be a conventional wife and mother.

I didn't mind the restriction at all. In fact, I thought it was a luxury that Laurent was willing to let me live as a freeloader.

After breaking free from his thumb, I looked around and realized the devastating cost of that lifestyle. I had never built a social circle of my own, but that did nothing to dampen my appetite.

I ordered a Michelin-starred dinner from hotel room service and ate every bite until my stomach was bloated.

Bored out of my mind and needing to digest, I wandered over to a nearby park, rubbing my full stomach with one hand while propping up my lower back with the other.

I never expected that fate would be cruel enough to throw me right into the path of Serena and Laurent. Yet there they were, walking side by side down the trail, chatting and laughing.

"Debbie? Hey, long time no see!" Serena exclaimed, cutting herself off mid-sentence with Laurent.

She waved enthusiastically, her eyes scanning me from head to toe. A saccharine smile broke across her face as she added, "You've put on a little weight! Your face looks so much softer now. It's so cute."

If this had been the old me, hearing her passive-aggressive comment about my body would have left me mortified. Compared to Serena, whose years of professional ballet training had left her with a perfectly toned, curvy silhouette, I looked like a featureless cylinder.

I wasn't exactly fat, but I certainly had squishy bits all over. Now, however, those shallow insecurities couldn't touch me. I had a baby to grow, and if I didn't eat enough, my child would starve.

When I didn't respond, Serena let out a knowing chuckle. She pointed at my posture, focusing heavily on how I was rubbing my stomach and supporting my spine.

"Debbie, are you pregnant?" she asked, testing the waters.

I was indeed pregnant, though just one month along. My body wasn't showing yet, and I was just suffering from a food coma.

Before I could answer, Laurent frowned and said dismissively, "No, she just overate."

A wave of bewilderment washed over me. Hadn't I texted him the medical report the night before? Yet here he was, looking unbothered and clueless.

I quickly swallowed my shock. We were getting divorced anyway, and as far as I was concerned, this child belonged entirely to me.

"Right, I just overate. I'm not pregnant," I echoed smoothly, then gave them a dismissive wave. "Now, if you two would kindly move aside, I'd like to get back to my walk."

The trail wasn't even narrow, but the two of them were standing in the center, blocking my path. If they wanted to canoodle and make out, they were welcome to do so.

I just couldn't understand why they had to trap me here like I was being punished.

"You're out here walking all by yourself?" Serena asked, covering her mouth in mock surprise while refusing to budge an inch.

I bit back a sarcastic retort. My husband was currently acting as her personal escort, so what else was I supposed to do? Tag along behind them like a lost puppy?

"How about we keep you company?" Serena offered seamlessly.

It was a masterful piece of manipulation. By phrasing it that way, she grouped Laurent into her camp, establishing the two of them as a singular "we," while completely alienating me.

She conveniently forgot that Laurent and I were a married couple. What a phony bitch!

"No thanks. I don't feel like being a third wheel," I said evenly. "Take your time walking, and if you go just a little further up the path, there's the Vienna International Hotel. Super convenient for you two."

In the past, whenever Serena subtly rubbed her "special connection" with Laurent in my face, I would swallow my humiliation in silence.

I wasn't stupid; I knew that if I fought back or made a scene, Laurent would simply label me a jealous shrew and drift even further into her arms.

But now that I no longer wanted the man, her psychological warfare failed to spark even an ember of jealousy in my chest. So, I stated my thoughts bluntly, even kindly pointing them in the direction they should go next.

My blunt insinuation soured Laurent's mood. He sulked, "Debbie, I came out here to find you and take you home. Running into Serena on the way was a complete coincidence.

"She was only trying to be kind, and you repaid her concern with nasty suspicion. That's ridiculous."

His words stepped on my landmine. The absurdity of his defense tore a cynical laugh from my throat as I turned on him, retorting loudly, "Are you kidding me?"

I had never uttered a word about my background.Mikael moved with ruthless efficiency, executing the division of every asset outlined in the settlement and sending the certified paperwork to the notary public.Only then did the reality finally crash down on Laurent: the divorce was serious. He didn't care about the billions or the property holdings in the slightest. He just lunged forward and grabbed Mikael by the arms, his voice tight. "Where is Debbie? Where did she go?""Get your hands off me!" Mikael snapped, shoving him back with disgust. "Who are you to ask? What right do you have to know anything about her?""Where is Debbie?" Laurent persisted, never feeling

Why had I been so foolish back then? Within a week, the lawyer had slapped Laurent with a court-issued enforcement notice, demanding his signature on the divorce settlement.Laurent called me the second he got the notice. I had unblocked him during that hospital emergency and forgotten to put him back on the blacklist."It's been two weeks," he gro

Honestly, that was the least of my concerns right now. I just wanted to escape this city and go to my hometown.I stared at Hunter, unyielding. The message in my eyes was simple: "Do exactly what I say."My flight was scheduled for nine o'clock tonight. If we left immediately, I could still make it.Hunter glared back at me for a long, tense moment before waving his hand in exasperated defeat. He stepped forward and gripped my arm to steady me. "Fine. I'll take you there right now."I looked absurd—hobbling on one leg with a crutch in one hand, while my other hand protectively shielded my belly.Hunter didn't say a word during the entire drive to the airport. Neither of us broke the silence until I had finished checking in at the counter. He looked down at me with a rare, complicated expression, his eyes flickering uncomfortably toward my midsection. "You're pregnant, and you're still leaving? Are you... planning on ever coming back?"It was probably the first time he had ever s

"I'm sorry, but given the nature of your injury, you can't sign the consent forms yourself. We need a family member to be present and informed," the nurse said, her expression apologetic but firm.Cheryl was my only real friend here in Aronespire, but she was currently studying abroad. Left with no other choice, I opened my contacts, pulled Laurent out of my block list, and dialed his number. The hospital corridor was crowded, packed with people injured in the multi-car pileup. The moment the call connected, I asked flatly, "Where are you?"Before the words had even fully left my mouth, my gaze drifted down the hallway. There, at the far end of the corridor, I spotted Laurent holding his phone to his ear.Serena was standing right beside him. His eyes were fixed on a doctor wrapping layers of gauze around Serena's finger."At the office," he replied without a second thought. "I have a meeting to get to. If it's nothing urgent, I'm going to hang up."He paused for a beat, then ad

The Maddox family didn't care about my background at all. They simply arranged for us to get the marriage certificate, and Laurent never once asked about my life before him. After we tied the knot, his attitude was freezing. He hated having servants in the house, so I transformed myself from a kitchen novice into a master chef, cooking his meals and managing his household day after day just to earn a shred of warmth.Yet, I never fully trusted him. I bombarded him with daily texts and called to check on his whereabouts whenever I felt insecure. Every time he ignored me, I would threaten divorce, hoping he would coax me to stay.He never did. I would always swallow my pride and crawl back to him. I had been such a lovesick fool, genuinely believing time would spark love. But Serena's return shattered that delusion. I finally realized his coldness wasn't a personality trait; he simply didn't like me.Aronespire held nothing but heartbreak for me now. My plan was simple: finalize the

Just as I had imagined, Laurent's lips were perfect for kissing. That was my first kiss—a clumsy, desperate ambush in a pitch-black room.Somehow, I managed to pin him down, overriding all his attempts to resist. I had no idea where I found that kind of strength, especially since Laurent was always the stronger one after we got married.I breached his defenses, fumbling and inexperienced, pressing closer until I had to cling to his shoulders just to stay upright. By the time I finally pushed him away, I was exhausted and burning up."It's too hot," I slurred, my clothes half-undone. "Take yours off, too."The heat radiating off him made me break out in a sweat. Losing no time, I began running my hands over his chest.Right then, the lounge door was wrenched open. The overhead lights flicked on, blinding me and snapping me back to reality."Debbie Hammond, you really have no shame!" Hunter roared, throwing a suit jacket at me.My eyes flew open. The doorway was packed with guests
