Chapter 1

Author: Cool Husky
By the time I got downstairs, Ethan’s jacket had been torn to shreds.

Ethan looked at the Doberman in terror, his face pale.

“Dad! S-Save me!”

Ethan gasped for air, his tone full of fear.

Standing there, the neighbor, Andrew Livington, said in disdain, “You have a rude kid.

“My baby girl is just playing with you. Why are you screaming for help?”

Bella the Doberman got more hyped up. She put her paws on Ethan’s shoulders while drooling.

Armed with my kitchen knife, I lunged forward.

“Silas, have you lost it?

“Don’t hurt my baby girl!” Andrew cried in a fluster.

Not paying him any heed, I swung my knife at Bella.

The ambush drew a deep gash across Bella’s body.

She rolled to the side and whimpered in agony.

“You came, Dad!”

Ethan reached his hands out in tears.

“Don’t be scared, Ethan. It’s okay now.”

I pulled Ethan into my arms and whispered reassurance.

Ethan was born with a congenital heart condition, so the slightest emotional distress could be fatal.

Yet, there was an incident today.

I examined Ethan from head to toe.

Only when I was certain he hadn’t been hurt and was no longer in shock did I heave relief.

“Silas, how could you be so vile?

“I can’t believe you hurt my baby girl!”

Andrew shot me an accusatory look, his gaze burning with rage.

His loud voice attracted a crowd.

Andrew put on a sad look for the people. “Let’s hear from everyone. Was it wrong for my baby girl to play with his son?

“But the guy turned around and slashed my baby. Talk about cruel.”

The crowd looked at me in disapproval.

“For a guy to carry a kitchen knife around the neighborhood, I hope he doesn’t have anger issues or something.”

“If your kid is so fragile, don’t let him out of the house.”

“That Doberman is a rare pedigree. It must be worth more than a hundred thousand bucks.”

Everybody threw around their opinions.

Ethan trembled in fear.

My heart went out to him.

Fearing Ethan might go into shock from the emotional strain, I scooped him up and turned to leave at once.

However, Andrew stood in my way and said arrogantly, “You can’t leave. You need to pay up for injuring my baby girl.

“It’s going to cost you a million bucks for the vet bills and mental trauma.”

I furrowed my brows.

The onlookers gasped sharply.

Meanwhile, Andrew uttered without a care, “Bella was a gift from my wife.

“She flew across the world just to bring the breed back.”

Andrew gave Ethan, who was in my embrace, the side eye before remarking in contempt, “That little brat can’t even compare.”

Blood rushed to my head.

Ethan meant more to me than anything else in the world.

I would not stand by and let anyone insult him.

Setting Ethan down to the side, I grabbed Andrew by the collar and punched him in the jaw.

“How dare you hit me!” He shouted, his voice shrill.

I sneered and pointed the knife at him.

Horrified, Andrew staggered back.

“D-Don’t do anything s—” Andrew said with a shaky voice.

The crowd looked terrified.

Suddenly, Ethan took my hand. “Dad, Mom is back.”

I turned my head in the direction Ethan was pointing and saw the familiar silhouette.

Before the words even left my mouth, Andrew ran over with a hurt expression. “You’re finally back, babe!”

“If you could step aside for now.” I waved my arm. Then, I approached Crystal. Hunched over, I sneered, “Retained counsel? “You only got the job at the Warburton Group because of me.” Crystal was stunned. “You’re really the heir of the Warburton Group? “Why didn’t you tell me?” Crystal shouted, sounding rather hurt. It was the most absurd thing ever. “Why should I tell you?“A woman who has been unfaithful and involved in the abduction of her own son is not fit to be a member of the Warburtons.”Crystal was thrown into a panic. “Hear me out, Silas. It’s not what it looks like.” Struck by a thought, Crystal snapped her head toward Andrew. “It was him! He was all over me!“He insisted on kidnapping our son. “I only stayed with him for fear he might hurt Ethan out of desperation!” Andrew was in disbelief. He shot an angry look at Crystal, but only muffled sounds came out of his lips. Out of the kindness of my heart, I removed the towel from his mouth. An

I scowled. Filing a false police report? The police officer was quick to change his tune. It seemed Crystal had been throwing her weight around with the Warburton Group behind her. Mistaking my silence for fear, the police officer said sternly, “You’ve seriously disrupted our response operations and wasted a lot of police resources.“I think it’s best if we take you down to the precinct.” The police officer pulled out handcuffs to cuff me. Rachel stepped right in front of me. “Is this how you enforce the law?” The lead police officer paused, but anger quickly filled his eyes. “Are you telling me how to do my job? Who do you think you are? “You’d better watch it. I might just charge you for obstructing justice. That should keep you detained for a few days.” Rachel pulled a long face. I grabbed her arm. “What’s the rush? “The secretary of the Warburton Group isn’t even here yet. How are you supposed to answer to him if you took us away?” The police officer

I pointed at Crystal and Andrew. “The kidnappers are the child’s mother and her lover.” The police officer was stunned. “Mr. Warburton, this is not a joking matter. “Mrs. Warburton is a renowned legal counsel in the city. She has worked with the police force on many cases. She wouldn’t commit such an act.” The cops behind him nodded in agreement. Furrowing my brows, I was peevish. “It’s really her. I found my son stuffed under the mattress in her lover’s bedroom.” I pointed at the rope on the floor. “You can check for fingerprints and decide whether I’m pulling your leg.” The lead police officer and his team turned solemn. Ethan, who nestled in Rachel’s arms, interrupted the cops before they could say anything. “Mom and that guy took me from the hospital. “They tied me up and told me they’d beat me if I didn’t listen,” Ethan said miserably. He put his hands out and showed the bruising along his wrists. The police officer, his expression grim, went up to ex

“Rachel…” I was choked up with emotions. It never occurred to me that Rachel Warburton would show up. My sister was there just in time to save the day. My eyes welled up. Rachel’s gaze softened. “Stop crying. What will my nephew think of you?” Rachel said in disapproval, but she was gentle in helping me to my feet. Crystal looked at me skeptically. “Nephew? I didn’t know you had a sister. “I thought you were an orphan.” I was taken aback. An orphan? So that was what Crystal believed all these years. Then again, I had never talked to her about my family. I gave up on family, my career, and everything just to be with her. What did she do in return? She cheated on me and kidnapped our son. Maybe I made a mistake right from the start. I let out a wry smile as my mind wandered to the day I eagerly told Rachel that I had found the one. At the time, I thought she would give me her blessing. To my horror, Rachel hurled a pile of photos right in front of my

It was Ethan’s voice! With anxiety written all over my face, I sprinted toward the bedroom on the double. Crystal stood in my way. “Leave, Silas! “Don’t ruin your life any further. Don’t let this get out of hand.” Crystal was firm on that note. However, I detected a subtle hint of nervousness in her expression.I pulled a grimace. She was a monster! I couldn’t believe she would conspire with her love to kidnap her own son. With all my might, I shoved Crystal out of the way. Caught off guard, she tumbled to the floor. I even heard a sharp, sickening crack as her bone snapped. Nevertheless, Crystal shouted anxiously at Andrew as if numb to the pain, “Quick! Stop him!” Too bad it was too late. While Andrew stood in a daze, I stormed into the bedroom. Holding my breath, I carefully pinpoint the source of the sobs. Moments later, my gaze fell on the bed. I was pretty sure that Ethan was in there. With that, I threw the mattress off the bed frame. There

“You are mad, Silas!” Amid my outburst, Crystal shouted in surprise, “Let Andrew go! “We are right outside the police station. Trust me when I say you’ll spend the rest of your life behind bars.” The threat was clear in Crystal’s furious voice. I was unfazed. Keeping a deadly grip on Andrew’s throat, I narrowed my eyes coldly. “Spill! Where is Ethan?” I demanded sternly. “I… don’t… know… “I told you… it’s Karma… He could be… dead by now…” Andrew wheezed out. Even when his face turned beet-red as I squeezed the air out of him, his eyes were filled with defiance. I tightened my hold on him. Wincing in agony, Andrew smacked my arm desperately. A crowd had gathered at this point. “Talk about brazen. Is he seriously committing murder right in front of the police station?” “Why does the guy look familiar? I can’t put my finger on it.” “Isn’t he a psycho running around with a knife?” … With the word going around, the people quickly identified me. Crystal sa
