The front door clicked shut behind him.

Masahiro stepped into the apartment, the familiar hush of home brushing against his shoulders like a coat he hadn’t realized he missed. He slipped off his shoes with military precision. Set his keys in the tray.

Matthew was sprawled on the couch.

One leg over the armrest, one hand behind his head. Hoodie bunched at his waist, sweatpants riding low. A half-finished bowl of noodles sat abandoned on the coffee table. His eyes flicked toward Masahiro—cool, unreadable.

Masahiro offered a low, even, “I’m back.”

Matthew didn’t look away from the TV. “Yeah.”

No kiss. No sarcastic comment. Just that clipped tone—tight enough to cut.

Masahiro stood a moment longer in the entrance, watching him.

Then, without a word, turned and headed for the bedroom.

The door closed behind him.

In the distance, the muffled sound of running water filled the silence. The bathroom light leaked under the door, casting a pale line across the hallway floor.

Masahiro waited until the office was empty. The envelope sat on the corner of his desk, cream-colored and official. No markings beyond the departmental stamp and the wax-sealed edge—typical of inter-agency transfers. He broke the seal clean.Inside: a folded letter on thick stock, stamped and signed in triplicate. He read it once, then again. To: Chief Inspector Masahiro PayneMiddlesbrough Metropolitan Police – Narcotics DivisionFrom: Office of Special OperationsNorth Yorkshire Regional Intelligence CommandSubject: Interagency Collaboration Request – Officer Matthew SmithDear Chief Inspector Payne,Following recent developments concerning regional crime syndicate activity and due to Officer Matthew Smith’s extensive prior infiltration experience (876-Z/BELLTOWER), this letter serves as an official request to assign Officer Smith to a joint undercover operation coordinated by the North Yorkshire RIC.The operation, designated OPERATION COALVEIN, requires immediate placement of an

The car hummed low beneath them, engine smooth as Masahiro shifted gears with one hand, the other steady on the wheel. Morning light streaked through the tinted glass, casting sharp lines across his cheekbone, jaw tight in focus.Matthew watched him from the passenger seat—slouched, one leg up, sunglasses low on his nose. Masahiro looked like a man built for pursuit: sleeves rolled, collar stiff, profile unreadable. Unbothered. Always. The phone buzzed.Masahiro didn’t flinch.Matthew glanced at the screen. “It’s her again.”Masahiro tapped to answer, eyes never leaving the road. “Yes.”“Inspector,” Diana said, voice cool and unhurried. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything personal.”Masahiro didn’t blink. “I’m driving.”“I figured. I was reviewing the Finch report again and thought—why wait until the office? We could grab a quick coffee. Run through it face to face?”Matthew shifted, letting out a quiet exhale. Masahiro said nothing for a beat too long. Then: “I’m five minutes from th

The bed creaked with each movement. Matthew's fingers dug into Masahiro’s back, breath sharp, body arched beneath him. The room pulsed with heat, rhythm, and muffled moans.A phone buzzed. Once. Twice.Masahiro didn’t stop.Matthew laughed breathlessly. “That better not be work.”Masahiro grunted. “Not my problem right now.”Matthew exhaled, sweat-slick and flushed. “Might be someone dying.”Masahiro muttered something sharp in Japanese, reached blindly for the phone, and froze when he saw the name.Callum Doyle. His rhythm faltered. Jaw tightened.Matthew noticed. “Who?”Masahiro hesitated, then answered. “Callum Doyle.”That made him stop. Completely. He exhaled slowly, then tapped to accept. His voice dropped into that professional calm that sounded too collected for someone currently half-naked and pressed against another man.“Doyle.”There was static. Then a soft, uncertain voice. “Sorry. I didn’t think you’d pick up.”Masahiro leaned down again, brushing his lips over Matthew’s

The AC hummed. Clark adjusted his glasses, eyes on the passing fences, the stacked cement of Middlesbrough's industrial edge. Adam was driving—one hand on the wheel, the other resting like the road beneath.Adam’s burner lit up on the dash.WILSON (Boss)Adam hit the speaker with a thumb.“Yeah.”Wilson’s voice came through like gravel and smoke.“Need you at Broadside after sunset. One of K’s boys mouthed off again.”Adam chuckled. “He want a lesson or a funeral?”“Let him pick after the second rib.”Clark didn’t blink. Then Wilson added—low and pointed:“You still fuckin’ that fancy lawyer?”Silence.Adam didn’t even flinch. Didn’t slow down.“We fuck, yeah. But it ain’t like that. I’m straight.”“Thought so. Just a nut and walk, right?”“Exactly. Ain’t my man. Just my client with a needy ass.”Clark didn’t move.Didn’t breathe, for a second. His stomach pulled tight like someone yanked a string from the inside.“Later then,” Wilson ended.Adam hung up with a tap. No glance Clark’s

Matthew stepped into the office, the door clicking softly behind him.Arthur’s chair was empty.Across the room, Masahiro stood beside Diana near the tall bookshelf, both hunched slightly over an open file. The noon sun cast stripes of light over the hardwood floor, catching in Diana’s earrings and the red edge of Masahiro’s tie.Matthew didn’t say anything. He placed the warm lunch container on his desk—still sealed, still steaming—then walked quietly over to Masahiro’s desk and set a second container down. Not dramatic. Not even really visible unless you were watching for it.Diana was.Her eyes flicked from the container to Matthew’s back as he turned to retrieve two paper cups from a cardboard tray—coffee. One for him. One for Masahiro. No labels. He just knew which was which.Routine.He placed Masahiro’s coffee beside the food. Stir stick already removed. Then Masahiro’s phone buzzed on the desk.Matthew glanced at it, then looked up.
