Chapter 1

Crack!

A slap landed across my face without warning, hard enough that my vision blurred at the edges.

Half my face went numb instantly. My ears rang.

The person who'd hit me was my own mother, Valerie Winslet. She stood there jabbing a finger at my nose, her perfectly maintained face twisted with fury.

"Nick! You shameless, poisonous wretch! How did we ever raise a son as disgusting as you?

"You're a lost cause who can't even hold yourself together, and you spent a whole year dropped out of school running wild. Now you actually have the nerve to pull some underhanded trick and steal Bill's acceptance letter to Braxton University?

"Do you have any idea what you've done? Because of your selfishness and vanity, Bill's years of hard work are worthless now. You've dragged the entire Cyrus name through the mud!"

We were standing in one of the Cyrus family's private estates. Today's event had originally been planned as a college send-off party for my brother, Bill Cyrus.

His acceptance letter hadn't officially arrived yet, but a month earlier, Bill had already sworn to everyone that his practice scores were sky-high, and that Braxton had all but locked in his spot. Eager to show off the family's standing, the Cyruss had thrown this lavish party ahead of time.

The hall was packed. Wealthy guests had come to watch the show, alongside the ashen-faced dean of discipline from one of the city's top prep schools.

Off to one side stood my brother, his face dark, his fists clenched. His eyes burned with restrained fury, his jaw tight enough to crack. Anyone looking at him would have assumed he'd suffered some terrible injustice.

Just a few minutes earlier, I'd finished my first year of classes at Braxton and come home to spend the summer. Instead of a warm welcome from my parents, I'd walked straight into Bill's ambush.

"Mom... don't hit him yet. This is my fault," Bill said, his voice low, gripping the hem of Valerie's dress. "I didn't protect my application password well enough. I shouldn't have topped the rankings all the time. It must have put too much pressure on my brother.

"He's never measured up to me, not since we were kids. A whole year out of school probably meant a lot of people looking down on him too.

"He just wanted Mom and Dad's approval so badly. He wanted to know what it felt like to go to a top school, so in a moment of weakness, he had someone swap out my spot for him...

"If... if Nick really wants Braxton that badly, I'll give it up. Let him have the spot. I'll just retake the exam next year..."

Listen to that. What touching brotherly devotion. What a noble, selfless sacrifice.

Anyone who didn't know better might actually have been moved to tears by such a righteous little speech.

Standing off to the side, his homeroom teacher, Shane Stark, chose that moment to jump in, practically vibrating with righteous outrage.

"Bill, you can't be this kind-hearted! How can anyone tolerate something as filthy as stealing another student's spot?"

Shane was a textbook opportunist of a teacher. Because Bill had always scored well and been the favorite at home, Shane had fawned over him for years, while treating me with nothing but cold disdain.

I'd always been withdrawn, uninterested in socializing, and in my second year of high school, I'd abruptly dropped out. I hadn't set foot on campus in a full year.

To Shane, I was nothing but a directionless delinquent who'd run wild instead of studying. Bill, on the other hand, had been groomed with an elite education from childhood. He was the star pupil Shane was counting on to finally land his National Distinguished Teacher title.

Shane let out a cold snort and slapped a stack of printed photos down on the table beside the champagne tower.

"Nick, see for yourself!"

  • Golden Boy, Broken Crown   Chapter 10

It was Bill.He was dressed in filthy, tattered clothes, gripping a fruit knife in one hand, his eyes burning with hatred as he lunged at the Cyruss."This is all your fault!"If you hadn't spoiled me into thinking I was some untouchable heir, and then kicked me to the curb and cut off my allowance the second it suited you, I never would have ended up picking through garbage to survive!"Since you don't want me anymore, since none of us can keep living like this, then we should all die together!"A piercing scream tore through the air, and blood spread instantly across the pavement.Chaos broke out. Sirens sliced through Hampson City's night sky.I turned away calmly and put the whole spectacle behind me.The next day, every major news outlet in Hampson City was running the story of the Cyrus family's tragedy.Rick had been stabbed by Bill and rushed into intensive care.Valerie had broken her leg in the chaos and was hospitalized as well.As for Bill, he'd been subdued by p

  • Golden Boy, Broken Crown   Chapter 9

The day I left in Charles's private car, public opinion online detonated completely. The scandal of an older brother framing his own sibling after failing the National Exam hit the front page of every major outlet. The relevant authorities moved fast.Shane was stripped of his teaching license on the spot and handed over to the judicial system. Prison time was waiting for him.Bill avoided actual prison time because of his age, but he was left with a serious criminal record and placed on a public credit blacklist. Forget college. Not even a factory floor job would take him after that.As for Cyrus Group, the fallout was catastrophic. The stock hit its daily limit down for two straight weeks, wiping out tens of billions in market value. Once word got out that the Cyruss had crossed both Charles and the National Talent Reserve Program, the political and business heavyweights who'd once partnered with them pulled their funding and tore up their contracts one after another.…Six

  • Golden Boy, Broken Crown   Chapter 8

Professor Charles Sandler was a lifetime academician of the National Academy of Sciences and a towering figure in Braxton University's mathematics department. A man of his stature was someone ordinary people only ever saw on the national news or in their textbooks. He completely ignored everyone else in the room, his gaze sweeping across the hall until it landed on me.His stern face broke instantly into a warm, affectionate smile as he strode toward me."Nick, my boy! Weren't we supposed to be celebrating back at the lab tonight? What are you doing in this cesspit?"Do you have any idea that your quantum algorithm optimization project passed its final review at the highest level yesterday?"You're the pride of the entire institute right now. If a single hair on your head gets hurt, how am I supposed to explain that to the top brass?"The room froze all over again.Rick's eyes looked ready to pop out of his skull."Prof... Professor Sandler, are you saying... that Nick led a na

At the very bottom of the screen, one more line blinked in bright, unmistakable red: [This student's file falls under National S-Class Talent Reserve classification and is protected at the highest level. Unauthorized access to the detailed record is strictly prohibited.]The room erupted. If Bill's score had drawn mockery a moment ago, this file inspired something closer to awe.The livestream exploded completely. The server even lagged for a few seconds under the load.[HOLY. Special admission?! And it happened a whole year ago?!][Dropout my ass, he was recruited straight into the National Talent Reserve Program early!][An S-Class Talent file! How big of a genius do you have to be for that? Three national-level seals. I've never seen anything like it in my life!][This is hilarious. The Cyrus family had a national treasure of a genius under their own roof and treated him like garbage? They wanted to send him to an internet-addiction center?][A guy who scored 229/400 accused

  • Golden Boy, Broken Crown   Chapter 6

Dead silence swallowed the entire room.A full five seconds passed before the crowd let out a collective gasp, followed by a wave of shocked murmuring nobody could hold back."229/400? That... that doesn't even clear the state-college cutoff!""Forget Braxton. That score wouldn't get him into a decent community college in Hampson City!""Wasn't he supposed to be top of his grade? Didn't he say his practice scores were over 370? What is actually going on here?"The livestream's comment section exploded instantly, a wall of text swallowing the entire screen.[No way! 229 points and he's going to Braxton? Does his family own the place?][Top of the grade my ass! I bet I could beat that score half asleep!][I'm dying. A guy who scored 229 had the nerve to accuse someone else of stealing his spot at Braxton? The shamelessness is unreal.][So this is the legendary rich-family genius everyone's been talking about? Illusion officially shattered.]Bill kept his head down, unnervingly

  • Golden Boy, Broken Crown   Chapter 5

After I hung up, the temperature in the hall dropped to freezing."You... you actually dared to call the police?!" Rick pointed at me, his hand shaking. "Do you have any idea how much damage this could do to the Cyrus name?""Damage?" I pulled out a chair and sat down like I owned the place, twirling the knife between my fingers. "The second you decided to lock me up in an internet-addiction center, whether the Cyrus name lives or dies stopped being my problem."About twenty minutes later, the sound of sirens cut through the air outside the estate.A string of official vehicles marked with the Department of Education's insignia pulled up right after.Several uniformed police officers and a handful of middle-aged men with badges pinned to their chests strode inside. The man in front carried himself with quiet, unmistakable authority. He swept his gaze around the room."I'm Director Bruce Maddox, here with the State Department of Education's inspection team."We just received a f
