Chapter 1

The look on my dad's face on the other end of the screen instantly turned cold.

He stared hard at my mom, the corner of his mouth curling into a sneer. "Claire, is this how you normally teach Lily? No wonder she grows up to be such a moody, gloomy kid. Completely unlikable."

My mom pulled me into her arms, her voice shaking. "David, Lily waited for you all day long. And now, you're telling us you were with your mistress and illegitimate kid?"

David let out a scoff. "Mistress? Illegitimate kid? Claire, have you ever actually taken a good look at our marriage certificate? Yours is fake. You were already pregnant with Lily when I married Sarah."

My mom's whole body jolted. Her face went white as a sheet.

David watched her fall apart, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "If we're being honest, Claire, you're the one who came between us. You're the other woman. And as for Lily... she's the illegitimate one."

My mom's body shook uncontrollably, but her eyes still held a flicker of desperate hope. "I don't believe you. David, you wouldn't do this to me, would you? When I was giving birth to Lily, I almost bled out. You gave me practically every drop of blood in your body. I don't believe you."

David sighed, shaking his head wearily. "I know this is hard for you to accept, but it's the truth. If you don't believe me, go check my computer in the study."

My mom let go of me and stumbled out of the room. Her eyes were dead. She calmly opened the pinned folder.

The first video was a wedding.

My godmother was in a wedding dress, leaning against my dad, smiling sweetly.

All around them were familiar faces—aunts and uncles I knew. My dad was smiling warmly, but when he spoke, it was a warning. "All of you, keep this to yourselves. Claire is pregnant. She can't handle any shocks."

Rose petals fell from the sky, beautiful and grand. It was a lavish wedding, witnessed and celebrated by everyone.

My mom opened the next file. There were two marriage certificates. The date on them was clear—a full year before my parents' wedding.

She scrolled down and saw a will.

It stated: [All private property under David Anderson is to be given in full to Sarah Perkins and her children upon his death. Claire Winters and Lily Anderson are to have no inheritance rights. They may not interfere with asset distribution and have no right to object.]

My dad's voice came through, lazy and indifferent. "Well? See it all clearly now? Do you finally believe me?"

My mom's eyes were hollow. David watched her in silence.

"I slept with Sarah when I was drunk. She's not like you. She needs me. You don't need anything. But even though you lied to me, I chose to believe you anyway. I know you can't live without me. But I'm tired."

His light, airy tone finally snapped whatever was left of my mom's composure.

A dry, raspy laugh escaped her throat. "Disgusting. David, you and that woman... you're both just disgusting."

She raised her hand and swept everything off the desk onto the floor.

I had never seen my mom look so broken.

But my dad showed no sympathy. His voice was cold as he snapped, "Claire, don't act like a crazy bitch."

He hung up the video call.

My mom collapsed, completely drained. She fell to her knees and screamed, "System, I want to leave this world. I'm taking Lily with me."

I stared, frozen, as a countdown appeared above my mom's head. Three days.

And suddenly, I understood. This time, my mom really was done with my dad.

My mom's phone rang sharply. She swiped it open, her movements robotic.

The voice of my dad—the younger version of him—came through, gentle and apologetic. "Claire, I'm so sorry. I've been stuck at work..."

My mom cut him off, her voice like ice. "Where are you? You, Sarah, and your kid—where are you right now?"

There was a long pause. Then my dad let out a low laugh and dropped all pretense. "So you already know. I'm at the family estate. The birthday party for Sarah's daughter has just started."

A thin figure suddenly threw herself at my dad. "David, David, I was wrong. You came to save me, didn't you?"The hunched woman glared at us with venom. "Get away from him. How did you end up like this?"My dad's eyes were cold, without a trace of pity. "She didn't deserve to be saved by you."It turned out that after we disappeared, he had uncovered the whole truth. He hated Sarah with every fiber of his being. He personally sent her back to her original home."She belongs rotting in that mountain village, not standing in front of us."My dad sent her back to the village idiot she had been promised to. She was tortured every single day. She lived worse than a dog.Later, she couldn't take it anymore and tried to run away. But in the process, she accidentally caused her own daughter, Fiona

I wasn't actually asleep. The moment my head touched the bed, I was wide awake.I heard every word of Liam's conversation with my mom.His voice was low and gentle. "Claire, please stop avoiding me. I've always loved you. And I regret so much that I didn't tell you sooner. I always thought there would be more time. I never expected to lose you like that."His voice cracked. "But thank God. Thank God you're back in my life. I know you have a past that still hurts you. Even if you won't accept me, that's fine. Just as long as you're alive. I just want to be here whenever you need me. I want to take care of you and Lily."My mom was quiet for a very long time. Finally, she spoke."Okay."My heart soared. It seemed like my mom was finally ready to walk out of the darkness. But the peace didn't last long. One day, my mom had just opened the door to the flower shop when an uninvited guest was standing there. It was my dad.It had only been a few months, but he no longer looked like

When I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital room.My mom was sitting by the bed. Her eyes were terribly red.The moment she saw me wake up, tears started falling. "I'm sorry, Lily. Mommy couldn't protect you. You almost never woke up again."I shook my head gently and pressed my face into her warm chest. "No, Mommy. You saved me."The two of us held each other tight. All the sadness we had been holding in for so long finally burst out. The quiet hospital room was filled with nothing but our soft crying.A long time passed before our emotions finally settled down.I rubbed my red eyes, looked around curiously, and asked in a small voice, "Mommy, are we in a different world now?"My mom's body went stiff for a moment. Then she gently wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes. "Yes. I'm sorry, Lily. Mommy took you away from that world without asking you first..."I cut her off and grabbed the hem of her shirt tightly. "I want to be with Mommy forever. I'd go anywhere with you."

At first, he had only seen Claire as gentle and compassionate. She was the precious jewel of the Winters family, protected fiercely by her older brother. When she grew up and started her own career, he forgot something important. She was never some fragile flower trapped in a small courtyard. She was alive, passionate, endlessly energetic. She used her own savings to start a charitable foundation. She sponsored one poor girl after another. But he felt lost.In the beginning, her world revolved around him. She followed him everywhere, clingy and sweet. But later, she stopped depending on him entirely. She traveled constantly, sometimes gone for months at a time.He argued with her, his face dark with frustration. "Claire, the world out there is dangerous. Can't you just stay quietly by my side like a good girl?"Claire would hold his hand and act playfully, but her voice was sincere. "David, I have my own career too. Those kids are suffering so much. I want to help them."That ar

David stared at the empty air in disbelief, barely able to breathe. How could this be? They disappeared? The wind howled past. The two falling figures from just a moment ago seemed like nothing more than his imagination. But the sudden, hollow agony blooming in his chest was so real it took his breath away."Holy shit—what the hell was that? Were they ghosts?"The kidnappers, who had been so arrogant just seconds ago, were now scrambling over each other to get away, their faces twisted with terror.David's eyes turned bloodshot. He lunged at one of the men and grabbed him, half-mad with rage. "Where's Claire? Where's Lily? How can they just disappear? Did she pay you to put on this whole act? How much did she give you?! I'll pay you triple—no, ten times. Tell me where they are!"The man in his grip was shaking with pure fright. His eyes were blank with confusion and fear. "I don't... I don't know! How is this possible? That bitch—was she really a ghost? It wasn't my fault! I

Sarah locked me in a room.My clothes were still wet. I sniffled quietly, wrapped myself in a blanket, and fell into a deep sleep.I don't know how much time passed before I suddenly felt myself being lifted into warm arms.I opened my eyes groggily. My mom was holding me, dirty and disheveled. The countdown above her head had changed to 1.She touched my burning body and gasped. "You're so hot! Lily, you have a fever!"My mom didn't care about anything else anymore. She ran for the door with me in her arms. But at the doorway, Sarah was waiting with several large men. They blocked our way.My mom held me tighter and glared at her. "What are you trying to do?"Sarah didn't look weak or gentle at all. She gave a smug smile. "Aren't you so proud of yourself? Weren't you always so high and mighty? Look at you now—what a mess."My mom's eyes turned red. She screamed, "Get out of my way! If anything happens to Lily, I'll kill you!"Sarah laughed softly. She raised her hand and sla
