Chapter 6

Penulis: October Fate
As Elise stepped out of the embassy the next day, her phone exploded with messages from Louisa.

"Eli, you have to check out what's on the trending page"

Confused, Elise proceeded to do as she was told. Upon reading the trending post, she was horrified.

As it turned out, a large group of Alexandra's fans had gone to a restaurant owned by her adoptive parents the previous night. The news reported that they were all hospitalized due to food poisoning from consuming spoiled seafood.

The restaurant had since been shut down pending an investigation.

Instead of pictures of Alexandra's adoptive parents, the media outlets had used photos of Elise's late parents instead.

Elise immediately called the news agency to request a correction.

The person in charge stammered endlessly and ultimately refused the request. It was only when Elise threatened to call the police that he hesitantly revealed the truth.

"Mr. Gerald Smith was the one who sent us those pictures!"

Elise felt like she would faint. She decided she was done listening to the explanations and hung up before heading straight to Gerald's office.

She needed a proper explanation!

When she made it to his office door, she barely had time to knock before she heard one of Gerald's best friends, Jack Foster, express in a bewildered voice, "Even if you were trying to protect Alexandra's adoptive parents, you could have used any other pictures instead of Elise's parents'! You, of all people, should know about her temper. She's going to be furious when she sees it!"

His protests only elicited a weary response from Gerald. "Well, it was Elise who poisoned Alexandra's fans!"

Jack cried out in disbelief, "Are you serious?"

Gerald pressed his finger over the bridge of his nose and frowned in irritation.

"Yesterday, she intentionally showed up at the restaurant and staged that 'chance encounter' with me. Not just two hours later, Alexandra's fans caught food poisoning.

"Alexandra's adoptive parents are honest people. They'd never knowingly buy spoiled seafood and pass it off as premium ingredients. Who else could have been behind this if not Elise?

"I was too foolish to assume that she had learned her lesson. She's still trying to frame Alexandra!"

Every word he spoke felt like a sharp knife plunged into Elise's chest. That pain was harrowing.

How ironic.

The sincere love she once held for him was now used as leverage for him to pin all the blame on her.

It looked like the viewers were wrong.

Gerald had never loved her at all.

In the end, she was the one who had foolishly mistaken the responsibility he had assumed as an elder for affection.

These past ten years of her life were a sickening joke!

She felt dazed as she went home.

As it turned out, somebody leaked the address of her place online. They thought that Alexandra and her parents lived there, so the online mob would storm the place.

When Elise got home, her front door had been vandalized, and the lock had been pried open.

The walls that her father had carefully painted were covered in graffiti, while all the furniture her mother had curated had been smashed to pieces. Even the framed family picture had been torn to shreds before being discarded in the toilet.

Elise did not throw a tantrum. All she did was stare numbly at the chaotic state of the house.

Then, she packed her remaining belongings and hired a professional cleaner to clean the house. After that, she hired a real estate agent to sell the house below market value.

After everything was done, she went to the airport.

Ten minutes before boarding, she drafted a post. She attached the restaurant's ingredient purchase invoices, along with her parents' death certificates, before tagging Alexandra and the official Smith Corporation account.

The post was captioned: "My parents passed away ten years ago. Can somebody explain to me how they are supposed to operate a restaurant that only opened last week if they are dead?

"If you're wondering who the person behind the food poisoning cases is, I believe this invoice tells you everything you need to know."

Within five minutes of posting, it had gone viral.

Then, Elise's phone blew up.

A month later, Elise was sunbathing on the beach while Clint was mixing her a drink. While he was doing so, he wore a scowl that seemed especially grim. He was glaring at Gerald, who was only a short distance away and complaining, "What a shameless old man! Quit trying to gawk at another man's wife. She's not going to be yours!"Elise was long accustomed to his rants by this point. All she did was roll over with her eyes still closed and remark dismissively, "You're the legitimate husband, and he doesn't have any claim to me. Why even bother?"This was enough to soothe Clint's wounded pride. With that, he gladly went off to get some fruits for her.Moments later, Elise received a text message from Gerald."There's going to be a party at the hotel tonight. I bought you a set of jewelry that will match the dress you had custom-made the other day."Elise did not bother to reply.Instead, she got right up and returned to the hotel.Shortly after returning to her suite, an attendant

Meanwhile, the background music accompanying the wedding march echoed across the ancient castle.Elise, who wore a veil, was walking towards Clint, who stood at the end of the red carpet. Her slender fingers gathered up the skirt of her gown. The priest stood between them and guided the procession. At last, he asked the crucial question. "Do you, Elise Callaghan, take this man as your husband?"As soon as the question was presented, the silence in the venue was shattered by the deep, bellowing voice of a man."She will not!"The guests gasped.Elise turned toward the direction of the voice and, upon recognizing Gerald, she felt her heart skip a beat.Gerald had lost a lot of weight since then. The black suit that once fit him like a glove was now sagging on his frame. There was a fresh scar that ran across his forehead. His leg also seemed injured, which was why he had to use a walking cane. When he cast a deep, solemn look at Elise, his striking eyes were filled with equal p

The project was a resounding success.Elise took her department out for a celebratory dinner. After the dinner, while she was trying to hail a taxi outside the restaurant, Clint's car pulled up right in front of her."Miss Callaghan, do you need a ride?" Clint smiled mischievously. His eyes gleamed like bright jewels underneath the streetlight. Before the other employees could notice, Elise quickly burrowed into the car. With that, the car drove off swiftly.Meanwhile, Elise closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep."So when are we going to make things official?"It was Clint who raised the question out of nowhere. He launched into a grievance-filled rant. He immediately began listing his rivals one by one."Did you see how the team leader of the sales department brought you a cup of coffee today? The marketing director spent half the day smiling at you and asked you to play tennis with him this weekend!"Upon noticing how vexed he had become, Elise tilted her head with a s

"Gerald!"Elise's eyes snapped wide open.It was only when she saw the fluorescent light shining overhead as well as the office computer in front of her that she realized she was dreaming. She had been in West Rofland for almost two weeks by now.Though she promised herself she would move on from Gerald for good, she ended up dreaming of him again during her lunch break. She dreamt of him covered in blood and unconscious. She decided to close her eyes and take a deep breath to calm down.By the time she exhaled, her heart stopped racing."Another nightmare?"She heard someone chuckle from the direction of the doorway. She looked up and met the gaze of Clint Harper, who had one hand tucked in his pocket and was watching him with an amused smile. Then, he chuckled and teased her, "What a surprise! The endless mountain range curled around the valley like a noose tightening around a young woman's neck. When Gerald stepped out of the helicopter and looked at the surroundings with its numerous peaks, a terrible thought came to him.If he never managed to uncover the truth, the real Alexandra might have spent the rest of her life trapped here. The helicopter rotors drummed up a terrific gust of wind, which caused Gerald's dark coat to flutter wildly, revealing the pendant wrapped around his wrist.Upon closer inspection, a faint and nearly invisible crack could be seen on the face of the pendant.Gerald gently kissed the pendant while making a vow. "Just wait for me a little longer, Eli. I won't let you go."Emmanuel was dragged out of the helicopter after him. His face was so bruised and swollen it was almost unrecognizable."Ouch…"Terrified, he kept his head down and led the way without a word. The villagers in the houses lining the road recognized him in an instant.
