Chapter 7 – The Man Behind the Glasses

Elise stood and followed the assistant through the glass doors. The office was large and quiet. Floor-to-ceiling windows showed the city. A wide desk sat near the glass. A man stood behind it with his back partly turned, looking at a screen.

The assistant spoke first. “Ms. Hart is here.”

The man turned.

Elise stopped walking. Her feet rooted to the carpet. Same face. Same thin rectangular glasses. Same controlled mouth. The voice that had told her she wasn’t leaving until she made him feel good now belonged to the man who signed the paychecks in this building.

Her throat closed. She forced air in.

The assistant glanced between them, then stepped back. “I’ll leave you to it.” The door clicked shut behind her.

Silence filled the room.

Damien Kane looked at her without surprise. He set a folder on the desk and rested both hands on the surface.

“Close the distance or leave,” he said. “Standing in the doorway doesn’t help either of us.”

Elise walked forward until she stood a few feet from the desk. Her hands stayed at her sides so he wouldn’t see them shake.

“You knew,” she said.

“I knew.”

“You had them call me in for an interview.”

“I had them find you. The interview was a formality.”

Elise’s jaw tightened. “Why?”

He pulled out the chair behind the desk and sat. “Sit down.”

She stayed on her feet. “Answer the question.”

Damien removed his glasses, cleaned one lens with a cloth from his pocket, then put them back on. The motion was slow and deliberate.

“No one else has made me come that hard,” he said. His voice stayed level. “I’ve been looking for you since that night. When my people located you, I created the opening. The job is real. The salary is real. The health stipend will cover your sister’s immediate needs. But the reason you’re standing here is because of what you did in that booth.”

Heat rushed up Elise’s neck and settled low in her stomach. She hated the way her body answered the memory even now.

“I needed money,” she said. “That was all.”

“I know what you needed. I also know how wet you were when you took me. I know the sound you made when you came. I know you hated that you wanted it.”

Elise’s fingers curled into fists. “You don’t get to talk about that here.”

“I get to talk about whatever I want in this office. You’re applying to work in it.”

She took a step closer to the desk. “If I walk out, what happens?”

“You walk out. The offer disappears. Your sister’s account stays under pressure. The loan shark keeps calling. Nothing changes for you except you lose the one clean paycheck that can fix the next few months.”

Elise stared at him. The city light reflected off his glasses and hid his eyes for a second.

“You planned this,” she said.

“I did.”

“And if I stay?”

“You work. You handle my schedule, my travel, my private correspondence. You stay quiet about anything you see or hear. Outside of those duties, you stay close enough that I can reach you when I want you. That’s the arrangement.”

Her pulse hammered in her wrists. “You think I’ll sleep with you for a job.”

“I think you already did it for cash. The difference now is the cash comes with benefits and a title. And I won’t pretend I don’t want more of what you gave me that night.”

Elise looked at the chair across from him, then back at his face. Pride and need fought in her chest. She thought of Lily’s still hand and the black car that had waited outside the hospital.

She pulled the chair out and sat.

Damien watched her settle. “The contract is in the folder. Confidentiality clause is broad. Salary is listed. Stipend for medical costs is listed. You start tomorrow morning if you sign.”

She opened the folder. The numbers were higher than she expected. The medical line alone would keep the hospital from freezing Lily’s care again. She read the confidentiality section twice. It covered everything.

“You hired me on purpose,” she said quietly.

“Yes.”

“Because of one night.”

“Because of how you rode me. Because no one else has matched it. Because I decided I wasn’t finished with you.”

Elise closed the folder. Her hands were steady now, but her insides were not. She picked up the pen, signed the last page, and slid the folder back across the desk.

Damien took it, checked the signature, and set it aside. He leaned back in his chair. The glasses caught the light again.

“Welcome to my world, Elizabeth. Try not to fall on your knees again… unless I ask.”

  • Good Girls Ride Too   Chapter 6 – One Week Later

One week after the bar, Elise sat in a glass waiting room on the thirty-second floor of a downtown tower. She kept her back straight and her hands folded in her lap. The chair was firm. Every time she shifted her weight she felt a faint echo low in her body, a ghost of the stretch and the wet ache from that night. She pressed her knees together and stared at the opposite wall.A woman with a neat blouse and a tablet walked out of a side office and stopped in front of her.“Elizabeth Hart?”“Yes.”“I’m the recruiter. Come with me.”Elise followed her into a smaller room with a table and two chairs. The recruiter sat first and opened a folder.“I’ve read your file,” she said. “Your earlier experience is strong. Good references from the first three years. Then a gap and a termination that doesn’t have clean paperwork. Can you explain that?”Elise kept her voice even. “I was accused of something I didn’t do. The company chose not to investigate fully. I left without a recommendation lette

Elise pulled her wrist free and stepped out of the booth without looking back. The curtain fell closed behind her. She kept the cash pressed flat against her palm inside her pocket and walked straight through the bar. The three men from earlier were gone. The bartender glanced up but said nothing as she passed. She untied the apron, dropped it on the counter, and pushed out the front door. The night air hit her face. She walked two blocks before she stopped under a streetlight and counted the money. It was real. More than she had held in months. Her hands still shook. She went to the hospital first. The night desk clerk looked up when Elise stepped to the counter.“I need to make a payment on Lily Hart’s account,” Elise said. The clerk pulled up the file. “How much are you putting down?”Elise slid a portion of the cash across the counter. “This should cover the urgent deposit and the next specialist hold.”The clerk counted it, typed for a minute, and printed a receipt. “This clears

Elise stood frozen with the tray still in her hands. His eyes stayed on her chest for a long second before they rose to her face.“How do you know my name?” she asked again. He nodded once toward the name tag pinned to her shirt. “It’s right there.”She glanced down. The tag sat slightly crooked over her left breast. Heat crawled up her neck. She set the tray on the table harder than she meant to.“Do you need anything else?” she asked. “I should get back.”“You’re not going back yet.”Elise’s fingers curled at her sides. “I only came to drop the drinks.”He leaned back against the seat. The thin glasses caught the low light. “Sit.”“I can’t. I’m working off a tab.”“I’ll cover the tab,” he said. “And more. But you’re not leaving this booth until you make me feel good.”The words landed heavy between them. Elise felt her pulse jump in her throat. She took one step toward the curtain.“I don’t do that.”“You need money,” he said. It was not a question. “I can see it on your face. Tripl

  • Good Girls Ride Too   Chapter 3 – The Room Goes Quiet

Elise shoved at the man’s chest again. His friends stayed close, blocking the path between the tables. The hand on her ass pressed harder for a second before he finally let go.“I said no,” she told them. Her voice came out tighter than she wanted. “Move.”The one who had grabbed her tilted his head. “We’re offering to help you. Don’t act like you’re too good for it.”“I don’t need that kind of help.”She tried to step sideways. One of them shifted and cut her off. The tray in her hands felt useless. Her pulse hammered in her throat. Heat still lingered low in her body from the unwanted touch, and she hated that it was there at all. Then the front door opened.Three men in dark suits walked in first. They scanned the room once. Behind them came a taller man. He wore a black coat and thin rectangular glasses. The second he stepped inside, the music seemed quieter. Conversations stopped mid-sentence. People turned to look and then looked away just as fast. The three men around Elise fro

  • Good Girls Ride Too   Chapter 2 – Liquid Courage and Empty Pockets

Elise left the hospital without looking back at the black car. She walked until her legs hurt. The streets blurred past her. She needed something to quiet the noise in her head—the loan shark’s voice, the hospital number, the eviction text. She pushed open the door of a bar she had never been to before. The place was half full. Music played low. She found an empty stool at the counter and sat down. The bartender came over. He was older, with a tired face.“What can I get you?” he asked.“Whiskey. Neat.”He poured it and set the glass in front of her. Elise wrapped her fingers around it and drank. The burn hit her throat hard. She ordered a second one before the first was gone.By the third glass her shoulders loosened a little. The sharp edges of the day softened. She stared at the dark liquid and spoke without looking up.“My sister is in a coma,” she said. “Hospital wants more money. Landlord wants the rent. Some guy on the phone wants everything else.”The bartender wiped the count
