Chapter 1

I did not like Thanksgiving, and I never wanted to go home for it.

However, my mother called me crying and lied that she had late-stage cancer, insisting that I make a trip home.

Over dinner, she criticized me like there was no tomorrow. “I wouldn’t even get to see you if I didn’t tell you I was lying! It’s been years since you came home. Do you still consider us your family?”

Ethan Cole looked up lazily from his food. The smirk on his lips made my hair stand on end.

“I bet you did something so terrible that you can’t even face us anymore. Am I right?” he said purposely, his voice laced with insinuations.

Everyone knew we did not get along. We became stepsiblings after my mother’s remarriage.

At her wedding, Ethan had cut up my dress to embarrass me. His father punished him harshly for it, but that did not stop him. In fact, it only made things worse.

Whenever the adults’ backs were turned, he would torture me with pranks, mockery, and taunting. He had a tight grip on my weaknesses.

I was too weak to fight back. Besides, it was not easy for my mother to marry a man with a good income, so I did not want to disrupt her marriage.

I tolerated everything. For years, I lived in this house, walking on eggshells the entire time.

It was only after a certain… incident that I dared to defy Ethan.

“Shut up,” I said coolly. “Don’t ruin everyone’s appetites.”

I did not care about protecting his pride anymore.

My stepfather shot Ethan a warning look. “Would it kill you to shut your mouth for once?”

Credit where it was due, my mother was unreliable, bad at finances, and sometimes infuriatingly naive… but she was beautiful. Furthermore, she had a good eye for men who loved her deeply.

My biological father and my current stepfather were both good men — steady breadwinners, loyal, and gentle.

The atmosphere at the dinner table turned tense until Ethan’s girlfriend, Chloe, broke the silence with a sickly sweet smile.

“Come on, don’t be like that! Ethan, you’re always thinking of Summer. You even said her name in your sleep that time.”

Chloe winked at me. “Aren’t all siblings like that? You fight and tease each other, but after going through so much together, you’re closer than anyone else.”

My mother immediately clasped Chloe’s hand with genuine affection. “We’re really happy for you two! I can’t wait to attend your engagement party.”

Chloe lowered her head shyly. “Thank you, Mrs. Cole.”

However, Ethan rained on their parade. “We can talk about the engagement later. I’m flying to Hudson City to discuss a new project.”

My mother did not protest. She never held much authority in the family.

After that, she turned the topic back to me. “But Summer, you’re not getting any younger either. You’ve never had a proper relationship, right? When do you plan to settle down?”

Chloe’s gaze turned cold. She cut a small piece of cake and put it on my plate with a saccharine smile. “We were from the same college, right? I heard you had a first love you could never forget.”

“Summer! You had a boyfriend? Why didn’t you tell me?” my mother cried.

Chloe leaned in and whispered as though we were best friends. “Come on, don’t be so shy! It’s been forever. Can’t you tell us?”

“There’s nothing to say.” I lowered my head and took a bite of the cake, my voice barely audible… because I could not bear to say it.

My first love, the boy I had poured all my heart into…

Was none other than the man she was desperate to marry.

That was right. It was my stepbrother, Ethan.

Before the police took Ethan away, he came to see me. He told me he had always loved me and wanted us to run away together. "Do you know why I married Zach?" I asked him quietly. "Bro, I'm tired of being let down and pushed around by you. It's easier to marry someone you don't like, so we can just stay out of each other's way." "I'm so sorry, Summer," he said, his eyes filling with tears. "It's all my fault. I really do love you. You've always been the one for me, Summer..." I reached out to wipe away his tears, and my sleeve slid up, showing an old scar on my arm.Ethan's grip on my wrist was firm. "Was it him again?"I winced and tried to hide my wrist, but it only drew more attention."People say I married Zach because I’m a gold-digger who got lucky. I’m the only one that knows agreeing to that marriage was like walking into a fire.""He's a creep!" Ethan blurted out angrily.I had set the stage, and now, it was time to reveal why I was there."I know you and Zach can't

Zach was standing there, his suit perfect, and his expression icy.He walked over with confident steps and took my hand."Today's our anniversary. I've been waiting to take you home," he said calmly."Chloe, the company didn't hire you to stir up drama. This is your last warning," he said. His icy presence swept across Ethan and Chloe like a blade.Chloe hesitated, then grabbed the document from her desk and retreated to her office."Fine, I'll handle this document," she said."Anniversary? Are you two actually married?" Ethan asked, disbelief in his voice.Zach took my wrist and wrapped his other arm firmly around my waist, as if staking his claim."Legally married," he said flatly. With that, Zach turned and led me away."No way!" Ethan completely lost his composure and shouted after us,"Zach Whitmore! Your standards are sky-high! How could you possibly be into her?!"In the backseat of the Rolls-Royce, Zach gripped my neck with one hand."Summer, now you can finally se

  • Good Riddance, Stepbrother   Chapter 11

I did not wake up until the sun was way up in the sky.The Rolls-Royce that had been downstairs last night was nowhere to be seen now.I checked my phone and found a message from Zach.[Caught the 6 AM flight to Hudson City.]He was a big shot in private equity. He always said time was money, so even on holidays, he was always jet-setting around the world.I texted back: [Everything's going well at work.][Summer, I waited for you all night downstairs. You're so cold-hearted.] he texted back with his usual pride.Zach sent a voice message, and I could hear the sounds of the airport's VIP lounge in the background."I went out of my way to mess up a deal for you. Ethan's company was looking to get a big investment from Krauss Group. I stepped in and spoiled their plans."I replied: [Thanks.][What will you thank me with? Want to try something new?] he asked.I smiled slightly and texted: [Maybe if you take Ethan down, I'll figure out a way to thank you.]Zach replied: [Easy.

Ethan slammed the phone down, furious, and looked at me with eyes full of anger and disbelief.I spoke quietly, "I told you, I'm married now."It’s to your enemy, Ethan.""What? Did you do this just to get back at me?!" He was fuming."So, you're his... what? His girlfriend?!"I did not say a word.I thought back to when I was Zach's pretend girlfriend. The first time I went to a party with Zach, he paid me double to drink for him.I got so drunk that I woke up the next day feeling sore all over.Zach was lying next to me, shirtless. He touched my shoulder."Ethan was right. You're so sexy, with such beautiful skin and a soft waist."I wanted to slap him, but he grabbed my wrist."I'm better than Ethan in one way. I'm good in bed, and I'm not afraid to admit it."Be my girlfriend, and I'll look after you."Thinking about that, and then looking at Ethan pacing around the room, when he had never even admitted we were together, just seemed silly."Are you that desperate? Ho

I gave Ethan a powerful slap.My hand smacked his cheek so hard that my wrist went numb."Your girlfriend is in the next room," I said, my voice low and angry, and my breathing heavy, "yet you still sneak over here to say such mean things? Don't you care about anyone but yourself?"You already messed up my first night," I said, my voice getting louder and sharper, "and now you want to mess me up again? Do you think I'm still the same scared little girl you can just push around?"His eyes turned stormy, his muscles tight under his shirt."Why are you acting all innocent, my wild little stepsister?" he said, moving closer and grabbing my wrist hard.He pushed me against the wall and started to rip off my clothes. However, he soon stopped.A thin red line was wrapped around my back. His fingers shook a little."W-what's this?"He saw more marks on my knees, purple ones that looked like they came from kneeling for too long.I quickly grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around myse

Moans interrupted my thoughts. They were soft at first but soon grew louder. Chloe's voice was all too familiar. "Ethan... Shouldn't we keep our voices down?" She chuckled softly, her voice gentle and with a hint of deliberate coquettishness. There were so many guest rooms in this house, yet they chose the small room next to mine. It was intentional.I heard Ethan's voice, relaxed and smug. "So what if she hears? Do I have to get my stepsister's consent to have sex?" He paused before his tone became gloomy and hoarse. "We're not related by blood. I don't owe her anything."I grasped the bedsheet tightly.Chloe moaned again, louder this time. She was putting on quite the show. Chloe whispered, "She still likes you. That's why she lied and said she was married. How pitiful."Ethan chuckled. "You're her future sister-in-law. It's time she learns her place.""Oh God! Yes!" There was another moan, and then there was silence.I sat up, feeling utterly nauseous. I picked up my phone,
