Chapter 3

Author: Isabelle Cross
No one knew.

The dangerous secret that Ethan and I hid was our relationship that only existed behind tightly locked doors.

At school, we were stepsiblings, just two kids who lived under the same roof. There was nothing odd about us at all.

However, once the lights went off and the room turned silent…

We became something completely different.

The passionate kisses and burning hot embraces were so dangerous that I nearly lost myself.

He studied seriously, and I helped him with his exam prep, checking every essay he wrote. His GPA soared, and it actually reached 3.8 when he graduated.

His father fulfilled his promise. When the results came out, a brand new silver Camaro appeared in our garage.

Ethan won, and I had completely fallen for him.

However, others were also starting to catch on.

“Aren’t the two of you… a bit too close?” someone mentioned over lunch. “Ethan, are you making a move on your stepsister, too?”

He scoffed and tossed a grape into his mouth. “Are you crazy? She’s family. Besides, who could someone like Summer seduce?”

Everyone burst out laughing, as did I.

That night, when he pinned me against the corridor wall, though, he did not look anything like a brother.

“God, Summer,” he murmured, his lips burning like fire on my collarbones. “You have no idea what you do to me.”

And I melt in his arms every time. Every single time.

After that, we graduated.

That night, the school rented a hall in the city center for our prom. There were chandeliers, and my rented dress sparkled like a sky full of stars.

Ethan did not even show up with Chloe, even though she was supposedly his partner.

He only showed up after the slow dancing ended and the DJ started up the EDM. Looking at me across the dance floor, he gestured at me with his chin, summoning me to his side.

I got into his car, and he drove us to a swimming pool. No one ever patrolled there.

“I brought you something,” he said, taking a small black box out of the glove compartment.

My heart skipped a beat. The box contained a sexy white bikini, soft, elegant, and undeniably seductive.

“You’re crazy,” I muttered, my face burning,

“I had this custom-made for you,” he said softly, his gaze intent. “I’m sure you’d be gorgeous in it.”

“This is insane.” I could barely breathe.

“Just once.” His throat was dry, and his voice was hoarse. “For me.”

I nodded.

Perhaps it was love.

Perhaps I was just lying to myself.

Either way, he got out of the car and waited for me to emerge in the bikini.

When I got out, his collar was undone and his sleeves rolled up. His gaze swept across my body.

“You’re so beautiful.” His voice was raspy. “Come here.”

My body was trembling. He reached out and pulled me into his embrace.

“You’re being too bold. What if someone sees us?” I asked against his chest.

His fingertips traced my spine as he kissed my shoulder, slowly and deliberately. “In that case, why don’t we hide in the water?”

He held me and jumped into the pool with a laugh. We frolicked in the water.

After that, he looked at me and said, “Call me ‘Brother’.”

He kissed me as though he could not breathe without me.

“I can’t,” I whispered.

He did not stop. He just came in closer…

He was strong. It hurt. But I did not stop him.

In that moment, under the cover of darkness and starlight, the only sound was the lapping water in the pool and my soft panting.

Before the police took Ethan away, he came to see me. He told me he had always loved me and wanted us to run away together. "Do you know why I married Zach?" I asked him quietly. "Bro, I'm tired of being let down and pushed around by you. It's easier to marry someone you don't like, so we can just stay out of each other's way." "I'm so sorry, Summer," he said, his eyes filling with tears. "It's all my fault. I really do love you. You've always been the one for me, Summer..." I reached out to wipe away his tears, and my sleeve slid up, showing an old scar on my arm.Ethan's grip on my wrist was firm. "Was it him again?"I winced and tried to hide my wrist, but it only drew more attention."People say I married Zach because I’m a gold-digger who got lucky. I’m the only one that knows agreeing to that marriage was like walking into a fire.""He's a creep!" Ethan blurted out angrily.I had set the stage, and now, it was time to reveal why I was there."I know you and Zach can't

Zach was standing there, his suit perfect, and his expression icy.He walked over with confident steps and took my hand."Today's our anniversary. I've been waiting to take you home," he said calmly."Chloe, the company didn't hire you to stir up drama. This is your last warning," he said. His icy presence swept across Ethan and Chloe like a blade.Chloe hesitated, then grabbed the document from her desk and retreated to her office."Fine, I'll handle this document," she said."Anniversary? Are you two actually married?" Ethan asked, disbelief in his voice.Zach took my wrist and wrapped his other arm firmly around my waist, as if staking his claim."Legally married," he said flatly. With that, Zach turned and led me away."No way!" Ethan completely lost his composure and shouted after us,"Zach Whitmore! Your standards are sky-high! How could you possibly be into her?!"In the backseat of the Rolls-Royce, Zach gripped my neck with one hand."Summer, now you can finally se

I did not wake up until the sun was way up in the sky.The Rolls-Royce that had been downstairs last night was nowhere to be seen now.I checked my phone and found a message from Zach.[Caught the 6 AM flight to Hudson City.]He was a big shot in private equity. He always said time was money, so even on holidays, he was always jet-setting around the world.I texted back: [Everything's going well at work.][Summer, I waited for you all night downstairs. You're so cold-hearted.] he texted back with his usual pride.Zach sent a voice message, and I could hear the sounds of the airport's VIP lounge in the background."I went out of my way to mess up a deal for you. Ethan's company was looking to get a big investment from Krauss Group. I stepped in and spoiled their plans."I replied: [Thanks.][What will you thank me with? Want to try something new?] he asked.I smiled slightly and texted: [Maybe if you take Ethan down, I'll figure out a way to thank you.]Zach replied: [Easy.

Ethan slammed the phone down, furious, and looked at me with eyes full of anger and disbelief.I spoke quietly, "I told you, I'm married now."It’s to your enemy, Ethan.""What? Did you do this just to get back at me?!" He was fuming."So, you're his... what? His girlfriend?!"I did not say a word.I thought back to when I was Zach's pretend girlfriend. The first time I went to a party with Zach, he paid me double to drink for him.I got so drunk that I woke up the next day feeling sore all over.Zach was lying next to me, shirtless. He touched my shoulder."Ethan was right. You're so sexy, with such beautiful skin and a soft waist."I wanted to slap him, but he grabbed my wrist."I'm better than Ethan in one way. I'm good in bed, and I'm not afraid to admit it."Be my girlfriend, and I'll look after you."Thinking about that, and then looking at Ethan pacing around the room, when he had never even admitted we were together, just seemed silly."Are you that desperate? Ho

I gave Ethan a powerful slap.My hand smacked his cheek so hard that my wrist went numb."Your girlfriend is in the next room," I said, my voice low and angry, and my breathing heavy, "yet you still sneak over here to say such mean things? Don't you care about anyone but yourself?"You already messed up my first night," I said, my voice getting louder and sharper, "and now you want to mess me up again? Do you think I'm still the same scared little girl you can just push around?"His eyes turned stormy, his muscles tight under his shirt."Why are you acting all innocent, my wild little stepsister?" he said, moving closer and grabbing my wrist hard.He pushed me against the wall and started to rip off my clothes. However, he soon stopped.A thin red line was wrapped around my back. His fingers shook a little."W-what's this?"He saw more marks on my knees, purple ones that looked like they came from kneeling for too long.I quickly grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around myse

Moans interrupted my thoughts. They were soft at first but soon grew louder. Chloe's voice was all too familiar. "Ethan... Shouldn't we keep our voices down?" She chuckled softly, her voice gentle and with a hint of deliberate coquettishness. There were so many guest rooms in this house, yet they chose the small room next to mine. It was intentional.I heard Ethan's voice, relaxed and smug. "So what if she hears? Do I have to get my stepsister's consent to have sex?" He paused before his tone became gloomy and hoarse. "We're not related by blood. I don't owe her anything."I grasped the bedsheet tightly.Chloe moaned again, louder this time. She was putting on quite the show. Chloe whispered, "She still likes you. That's why she lied and said she was married. How pitiful."Ethan chuckled. "You're her future sister-in-law. It's time she learns her place.""Oh God! Yes!" There was another moan, and then there was silence.I sat up, feeling utterly nauseous. I picked up my phone,
