Chapter 1

Author: Waning Moon
Gus Davidson tortured me for hours before I breathed my last.

It happened on the first anniversary of our marriage. It was also the first anniversary of Sienna Frazer's death.

Freezing water drenched me, making me feel like I was in hell. In my hand was the research grant I'd just secured for Gus, a triumph I hadn't yet shared.

I looked up at him, but the esteemed professor at Jeloria University stared back with such craze, as if he wanted to devour me.

"Feeling the pain?" He grabbed my chin, forcing a mix of strong liquor and a strange, perfumed substance down my throat.

I choked, coughing violently. "Why?"

He turned and ordered his bodyguards to drag me up.

Powerless, I was hauled across the floor like a ragdoll. After what felt like forever, I ended up in a cemetery.

They forced my head down, making me bow to a tombstone.

Rain washed over the grave, rinsing the blood from my face.

Gus said, "When Sienna faced everyone's accusations, her pain was a thousand times worse than yours. You'll atone for your sins."

He shed his usual scholarly demeanor, his eyes burning with deep-seated hatred.

The drugs dulled my mind. It took me a moment to recall the unremarkable name.

At our engagement banquet, Sienna tried to drug his wine.

I could've exposed her, but I didn't want my carefully planned event ruined. So, I discreetly had a servant swap the glass, keeping the matter quiet.

Then that drugged wine ended up with a notorious rich playboy. Later, they were caught going at it in a lounge.

The playboy, leveraging his family's wealth and influence, claimed Sienna seduced him to climb the social ladder.

A video leaked. Sienna's reputation was ruined, and she lost her guaranteed admission to graduate school.

Facing endless public scorn, she jumped from a high-rise.

Seeing her body, he scoffed, "I misjudged her. I shouldn't have sponsored a student like her."

On the surface, we appeared to be a perfect, enviable couple, but deep down, he believed I ruined Sienna's life and caused her death.

The drug's effects kicked in.

"Enjoy the gift I prepared for you," Gus snorted.

The door opened, and blinding lights forced me to shield my eyes.

Fat perverts surrounded me, leering with predatory intent. "Don't think about ending it. We've got a long night ahead."

"Go atone in hell," Gus said, walking away and leaving me in endless darkness.

The room was stained red with my blood.

After my death, Gus spread lies that I'd cheated during our marriage and died seeking thrills.

With public sympathy, he climbed to greater heights.

Unable to bear Gus's torment any longer, Sienna sneaked out and found me.I helped her hold a press conference. Her scars shocked the audience, and Gus's crimes were exposed.Gus took her back and locked her in a dark basement, abusing her daily. With my push, Gus's reputation hit rock bottom.Later, the Davidson family was exposed for tax evasion, forcing them out of their mansion into a cramped rental.Gus couldn't handle the downgrade and came to me. He was a wreck, far from the noble professor of my past life.Like a stray dog, he groveled. "Heather, we grew up together. I was wrong to fall for a lowlife and humiliate you. Please forgive me. You love me, right? If you give me money, I'll let you keep me."I scoffed at his delusion. "You've slept with countless women. Think you're clean enough for me?"He looked up and glared at me. "Heather, you're heartless. We got along so well.""Is that so? Perhaps before the engagement fiasco. If Sienna had died that night, would you

Gus glared at me and left with Sienna.I rolled my eyes, knowing their good days were numbered. What Gus didn't know was that, since the engagement banquet, I'd used my past life's knowledge to sponsor a promising scientific genius."Why help me? We've never met," Hale Coleman asked warily when I approached him."We share an enemy, and that's Gus Davidson. I know he's exploited you for years. Work with me, and we'll ruin him," I replied, awaiting his response."Happy cooperation," he agreed. In my past life, Gus's plundering practice delayed Hale's rise. The paper Gus just published? It was Hale's.After the engagement and breakup scandals, Gus was desperate to prove himself. As planned, Hale handed him the research results, which Gus eagerly published.I would let him bask in fame for a few days.Soon, with my nudge, accusations of his plagiarism surfaced. At first, no one believed it, but mounting evidence silenced doubters. Then Gus's students publicly accused him of expl

My silence made Gus think I couldn't let him go.He sneered, "Look at you, so pathetic. I'd never be with someone as vicious as you."In his mind, I was born to oppress Sienna."You're mistaken. I stopped loving you long ago." I shrugged, returning to my work. His pride crumbled. "Impossible! If you didn't love me, why help me through every research bottleneck?""Out of convenience, I guess. You were my fiancé, and I had the resources. That's all." I shrugged.Gus lunged at me like a manic, but I dodged. He didn't believe me, but I had no interest in arguing. The engagement was thus canceled.Right after, Gus sought out Sienna.Ignoring public opinion, they appeared together constantly, in and out of labs.Jack learned about it and threatened to disown Gus.Gus shrugged it off. "Fine. You only see me as a tool for your ambitions. Without you, I'll make my mark in academia."I laughed upon hearing about this. Without our backing, a mediocre man like him would achieve nothin

In my past life, my death was a hundred times worse. This was just a taste.Gus's cries alerted Helen. She threw herself over him, pleading, "Enough. He's our only child. Do you want to kill him?"Turning to me, she said, "You've always been sensible. He's still your fiancé. Can you bear to see him suffer? You won't meet someone better than him. Think about your future."Helen reached for my sleeve, but I stepped aside. Her face stiffened, but she continued, "Gus is so young and already a professor. His future is limitless."Her words were laughable.Every step of Gus's success was backed by my family. If he wanted love, I'd let him chase it.Gus, unable to watch his parents beg, snapped, "Heather, don't go too far! If you've got guts, cancel the engagement."I smirked, turning to Jack. "I've thought it over. Marriage isn't a game. Since you all insist, I won't argue."Jack was surprised by my leniency, but I added, "But Gus needs to apologize for his mistakes.""Apologize to

Sienna's defense of Gus sparked his protective instincts.Dropping his cultured facade, he pulled Sienna into his arms right in front of everyone. Sienna leaned into him, a picture of devotion. He stated, "We love each other. I love her, no matter her background. If not for this damn engagement, I'd be with her already."Jack was speechless with rage.I turned to challenge Gus. "Your love for her is real. What about us? We grew up together. I thought you were my lifelong love, but you humiliate me like this."Gus glared at me, disgusted. "You think I'd love someone who comes running like a dog when I snap my fingers? Your obedience is a joke."Getting the answer I wanted, I left the banquet with feigned agony.Outside, Helen stopped me. "Gus made a stupid mistake, but he's just dazzled by that poor girl. Once the novelty wears off, he'll come back to you. A renowned professor like him having a mistress is normal. She is just a passerby, while you're at his home. And frankly, it'

Gus growled, "You know I'm engaged."Sienna, undressing, replied softly, "I know, but I've loved you for years. Even if I'm just your mistress, I don't care. Why are you rejecting me like this? Because Heather is rich?"I sneered. When I founded my first company, Sienna was still an ignorant child.Gus's protests weakened, replaced by intimate sounds. I slipped away, ensuring no one disturbed them.Back at the banquet, I mingled as if nothing had happened.Gus's mother approached. "I haven't seen Gus in a while. Where is he? He's a renowned professor with access to national secrets. How can you let him wander off?"In my past life, everything had always been my fault. They had belittled me, eventually tricking me into signing over my assets.I lowered my head, mimicking my past self. "I'm sorry. I'll find him."I searched the hall and the lounges upstairs, but there were no signs of Gus."Mr. and Mrs. Davidson, Gus is gone." My panicked voice disrupted the banquet.Helen Davi
