Katherine POV

I nervously clutched at my bag, eyes darting around me.

As usual, the building housing SF conglomerates was bustling. Though it was still quite early, people were rushing to get to their offices in time.

The receptionist eyed me curiously when I told her I would be going to the CEO’s office.

“Mr. Burns said you can come up.” She told me when she hung up the phone.

I nodded and walked to the elevator landing.

Former employees of Freeway Robotics eyed me with interest when I joined them in the queue, but I decided to ignore them.

Lucas Sanders said he would announce my resumption of office and that I should report to him first thing this morning, so I kept my mouth shut when one nosy employee sidled up to me.

She started talking, and my body grew tense.

“Are you coming back, Katherine? I heard you are recently divorced. Noreen was telling us Mr. Sanders fired Greg because of you.”

I blanched, realizing that Greg’s dismissal must have caused an uproar.

I wonder wha

Lucas POVI watched the byplay of emotions on Katherine’s face, and my resolve almost crumbled seeing a chink in her armor. For the first time since she came in this morning, I looked at her and noticed the shadows under her eyes, making me acutely aware of the stress she was in. “How is Erin?” I subtly changed our topic. She perked up instantly when I asked about her kid. “She is doing great," Katherine reported. "Thank you for the apartment. Erin would love the new place.” Her voice had an animated tilt to it that was lacking from earlier. I nodded.Against Oliver’s reminder to hold back, I allowed Katherine to use one of my apartments. “I thought you wanted her to suffer. Why does it appear like you always try to save her? You are not her knight. She was not your damsel in distress.” Oliver eyed me suspiciously when he heard about my offer. I have several properties in the area, but the one I lent Katherine had a previous occupant. Oliver learned I had to pay them off to

Katherine POVI watched Lucas Sanders back dumbly and shook my head. His hot and cold treatment baffled me.But before I could delve deep into the enigma that is Lucas Sanders, my door was roughly flung wide open, and Noreen marched in like she owned the place.Maybe she did. She must have spent countless times in this office canoodling with Greg when I was not around.I crossed my arms over my chest and waited for her tirade. I did not have to wait long."I knew it was your way of making Greg pay back, but you have to stop right now because you can't touch me. My father is an inv

Katherine POV“He is Oliver Mans, the executive director for SF Assist. He is also Mr. Sanders’ friend.” I briefly told Veronica about how Oliver came to me, expressing support for Erin’s medical expenses after Greg pulled out his financial support. While I talked, Veronica had this smile playing on her lips. “What is it, Nix?” I asked when I could no longer hold my curiosity. She had this distinct look on her face that worried me. “I don’t know Katherine. I just feel this vibe that Mr. Mans likes you. The fact that he dropped by means something.” To say that I was surprised was an understatement. The idea never crossed my mind. “Don’t think anything of it. Oliver, I mean Mr. Mans.” I corrected when Nix shot me with a teasing glance. “..is just being considerate. Erin is his foundation’s beneficiary.” “On a first-name basis, huh?” She countered, ignoring my claim. “He told me to call him by his first name,” I explained.Veronica raised her brow. “And what about the boss?

Lucas POVI glared at the ham and Swiss baguette and mocha coffee resting on my table as if it owed me big time. There was something about its presence that ticked me off.Yes, it was the same sandwich and coffee my assistant brought in, claiming it was from Katherine Fielding. How could she be so shameless as to send me our favorite food? What does she want now?The sight of the sandwich and iced coffee bugged me, but I couldn’t seem to throw it away. A big part of me is already conducting a picket in my head which left me with nothing to do except glare at the whole thing for almost an hour now.Lunchtime had come and passed, but I couldn't seem to find the drive to consume the whole meal despite the grumbling of my stomach."What are you doing?" Oliver asked when he walked in unannounced, disrupting me from my musings.I shot him daggers while he sauntered closer, seemingly unaware of my i

Lucas POVIt kind of threw me off to see Agatha in the flesh. Just last week, she was in Paris. Now, she was standing in front of me, grinning happily. I called her name, breaking the stunned silence cloaking us. The sound jolted my employees out of their open-eye staring. I could not blame them. Agatha had this effect on just about anyone. She commands attention even if she is not trying.Even Dan Burns, my assistant, was star-struck. It was the first time Agatha visited me on my turf.Because she was a noted personality- known for her work in ramp modeling and fashion in Europe, she had a somewhat celebrity status.I could not blame my people if they stared at her. It was not always that a person of Agatha’s status would grace our office. It was only natural that her sudden appearance would disrupt our daily grind. Still, despite her elegance, beauty, and sophistication, my thoughts were consumed by the woman who worked two floors below me, seemingly unaware that she had

Lucas POVI have decided. I will let every thought of Katherine out of my head. I will be finally letting go - the happy and the sad, the bitter and the sweet. All of those memories I will push down the drain where it belongs. Agatha does not deserve to wait. For five years, she had been with me. I should reward her loyalty with fidelity and trust. With that resolve in mind, I left the office, but not before leaving instructions with my assistant that I would return later to finish my task. Once Oliver had left, I found out that sitting alone in my office was stifling. Work had piled up because my concentration had been distracted by the appreciation lunch that Katherine had sent. Despite the knowledge, I don’t feel like tackling the work any time now. I was feeling antsy. I needed to do something to get out of this choking atmosphere. I drove off the parking area of SF Conglomerate to go to a jeweler shop in Berkeley. Before coming over, I secured a rushed online reservat

Lucas POVAs expected, the sales attendant’s eyes widened at the prospect of a huge sale. She was smiling when she invited me to follow her. We went from alley to alley inspecting numerous shelves until she stopped where everything around us was either in color pink or purple. The color seemed incongruous with my business suit, and from time to time, I could see some looking my way, but I ignored them. My eyes were trained on the dolls. I picked a doll that resembled Erin’s hair color, black, and put it in my cart. Then, as an afterthought, I bought some more. Then, a dollhouse caught my attention. “Little girls, I was told, loved dollhouses, sir.” The attendant told me.She did not need much to convince me and asked for their most oversized dollhouse to join my other purchases. As I walked the alley, I found several items, that again the saleslady said that little girls would like, and took them all. There was a manicure and pedicure toy set, a do-it-yourself bead set, a life-

Veronica POVBefore I put the paper I got from John, I tucked it in my memory, safe and secure. “Nanny Miller,” I said her name in my head countless times. I walked from the coffee shop to a nearby cab terminal when I heard a honk behind me. I sidestepped closer to the curb to resume walking when the car honked again. This time, I made sure to stop and let the car drive past me when I noticed that it was the same car Oliver used. The window opened, and Oliver’s face appeared. “Where are you going? Let me take you there.” He offered.I was surprised. I thought he had already left after dropping me off. Did he wait for me to conclude my meeting?I shook my head to thank him for the offer. I would rather go alone. This is a personal business and has nothing to do with our friends. “Thanks, but no,” I replied and resumed walking.I was already a few feet away from the terminal when I noticed the absence of cabs waiting for passengers. Oliver persisted. And the next thing I knew,

Oliver POVI followed Veronica toward the makeshift altar. We did not talk, and it worked just fine for me. Pachelbel’s Canon in D wafted in the air, and the processional began. After Lucas walked the beige-colored carpet, the coordinator nodded in my direction to indicate my turn. I squared my shoulders and began walking until I reached Lucas, and I stood beside him. We both face the end of the aisle to watch the rest of the entourage walk toward their seats. Then, it was Erin’s turn. Lucas smiled, watching Erin walk the aisle holding a cute flower basket made from dried rattan. From time to time, she stops to toss flower petals in the air before resuming her walk. When she reached Lucas, she smiled and made an okay sign. Lucas responded by giving her two thumbs up. Then, she lifted her arms to Lucas, wanting to be carried. Lucas indulged her. He grunted when he bent to pick her up, amusing the guests. Erin's arms surrounded Lucas's neck. Now, it was Veronica’s turn.

Katherine POVFor a moment, I thought he changed his mind, allowing doubt to creep in. But living in fear for too long makes one realize that there was a moment when she had to seize the moment and take a risk. Right now, I took a risk when I affirmed his question because he had become hesitant after asking the question. The glassy look on his face made me doubt if he was indeed serious with the proposal. But of course, raising your guard for a long time comes with a price -vulnerability. I tried to mask that weakness by pretending to be impatient, but inside, I was freaking out. What if he recalls the proposal?I grabbed his hand - the one with the engagement ring - to prove that the whole thing was not just a figment of my imagination. It was real. Lucas Sanders proposed to me. He had mentioned it previously but always tailed it with words that he would wait for my readiness. I realized no one was ready for anything. You take and accept things because they feel right. When L

Lucas POVMy chest pounded as I waited for Katherine’s reply to my proposal. Still, as the seconds stretched into a minute, I felt a wave of desolation washed over me. Disappointment was all over her features. My fingers closed on the diamond ring I bought with her in mind. "I know I did not prepare a grand proposal. I didn't even think of a good speech. I am also sorry for rushing you." I began to explain. It was different from pitching project proposals for my business because this would change my whole life. It sounded like I was babbling. The truth is, this is my first marriage proposal. I never proposed to anyone because no one came to measure up to this gorgeous woman in front of me. No one came close to how she has affected me that even after five years, she was still the only one I wanted. As I waited for Katherine’s reply, I remembered what Duke told me. “We can’t touch Agatha because JQ Entertainment is protecting her.”Now, the faceless man who dared to antagonize

Katherine POVI woke up alone in bed and felt slightly disappointed when I realized Lucas was gone. I turned to the side to hug the pillow he used on my chest, wishing it was him. It would have been nice to wake up and see him first thing in the morning. I was jolted from my daydreaming when the door to my room opened. Lucas entered the room with Erin in his arms. “Mommy!” Erin called out in a singsong voice. I watched her wiggle from Lucas’s arms. When her feet reached the floor, she began to run toward me. She climbed the bed and sat next to me. “You and Daddy sleep without me.” She complained. My eyes met Lucas above Erin’s head. Then, I turned to my daughter to mumble an apology. Erin shrugged. “It’s okay. Daddy promised we would sleep together tonight. You, me and Daddy.” Erin reported. The idea excited me. I began to caress Erin’s head to hide the pleasure the news brought. “Have you eaten?” I asked She bobbed her head. “Me and Daddy.” Then, she stood on the bed to tu

Agatha shouldn't have insulted my daughter because that is where I draw the line.I felt a tug on my hand, prompting me to stop.“Agatha had it coming. You shouldn’t feel any regret.” Lucas told me.He held my chin and stared deep into

Katherine POV“Well. Well. Well. The sarcasm in Agatha Richards' tone was keenly comprehensible, especially if one cared enough to listen. Agatha was walking out of the function room at the same time we did. And because all doors lead to the lobby, we sort of ended up meeting in the middle. There is no way I could have avoided her, even if I wanted to. Then, she dropped the bomb that put me in the spotlight. “If it isn’t the fiance stealer.” She looked at me up and down, and her nose wrinkled in distaste as if she did not like what she saw. I know I am not as sophisticated or glamorous as her. I looked down the denim overalls I wore at the tree planting project and knew that compared to Agatha, I looked very ordinary. But Lucas’s hand, when it searched for mine, felt very comforting. I knew Agathaa saw how he held my hand and squeezed it. The action sent a signal that he was trying to silently assure me. This seemed to ignite Agatha’s anger. “How does it feel to be taking my
