Level up

Nora Hayes thought she knew the story of her life. At twenty-seven, she has learned to live with unanswered questions, failed relationships, and the painful feeling that everyone she loves eventually leaves. But when a mysterious man named Eli Carter walks into the restoration shop where she works, carrying an old voice recorder filled with recordings from her childhood, Nora discovers that her past is not what she remembers. Eli has known Nora since she was seven. For twenty years, he has kept recordings, photographs, letters, and memories that were never meant to reach her until the right time. But why did he keep them? And why did Nora's childhood friend Claire disappear without a trace? As Nora begins uncovering the truth, she discovers secrets her family buried for decades—secrets involving her missing father, her mother, her uncle Daniel, Claire's disappearance, and Eli himself. But the deeper Nora goes, the more dangerous the truth becomes. Some secrets were hidden to protect her. Others were hidden to protect the people who betrayed her. And one secret could change everything she believes about the man standing beside her. As Nora and Eli grow closer, they must decide whether love can survive the truth—or whether the past will destroy the future they've only just begun to build.

**Chapter 1: the voice **
The first time Nora Hayes heard Eli Carter’s voice, she didn’t know it would become the sound she would spend the rest of her life trying to understand. It was a rainy Thursday in Portland, the kind of gray afternoon that made the whole city look like it had been washed in watercolor. The sky hung low and heavy, pressing against the rooftops, and the rain fell in a steady, unhurried rhythm that had already soaked the sidewalks and turned the gutters into small, rushing streams. Nora sat behind the counter at Second Sound, carefully cleaning the dust from an old cassette tape with a soft cloth, the way Margaret had taught her three years earlier when she first started working there. The shop belonged to Margaret Hale, an elderly woman with silver hair always pinned in a loose bun and hands that still moved with surprising steadiness when she handled fragile tapes. Margaret believed every old recording deserved a second chance. Nora believed the same thing about people. That was probabl

**cheaper 2 : twenty years of almost **
Nora did not sleep. She lay on her back in the dark of her apartment above the bakery, staring at the ceiling while the rain kept falling in uneven waves against the windows. The smell of cinnamon still drifted up from downstairs even at three in the morning. The fern in the corner looked more defeated than usual. The ivy had given up entirely. She kept replaying the same three recordings in her mind until the words no longer sounded like language. They sounded like doors opening in rooms she had never been allowed to enter.*You’re going to forget this day, sweetheart.* *Because sometimes forgetting keeps us safe.* *And Nora will forget.* *Eli, if you found this… then you found Nora.*By 5:47 a.m. she stopped pretending rest was possible. She sat up, pulled on yesterday’s jeans and a thick sweater, and stared at the black voice recorder sitting on her kitchen table like it might start speaking again on its own. She had brought it home. Margaret would have been furious. Nora cou

**cheaper 3: the shape of silence**
The days began to blur.Nora stopped counting them after the third. She would arrive at Eli’s house while the morning mist still clung to the trees, and she would leave only when the sky had gone dark enough that the windows reflected their own faces back at them. In between, they listened. Not constantly. Not with the frantic urgency of the first night. They listened the way people read letters from the dead—carefully, repeatedly, with long stretches of quiet in which the words were allowed to settle and rearrange themselves into new and more unsettling shapes.Eli never rushed her. He also never offered comfort that felt rehearsed. Most of the time he simply sat across the room, coffee cooling in his hands, and watched the recordings the way a man watches a storm he already knows will reach the house. The ordinary files were almost worse than the frightening ones.Claire teaching seven-year-old Nora how to skip stones at the river. **cheaper 4: the almost between us**
The fifth day arrived without announcement.Nora woke on Eli’s couch just after dawn, the throw blanket tangled around her legs, the taste of yesterday’s coffee still faintly present on her tongue. She had not meant to stay. Somewhere after midnight the rain had grown heavier, the recordings had grown quieter, and the distance between the armchair and the door had begun to feel longer than the distance between the armchair and sleep. Eli had offered the couch without ceremony. She had accepted without arguing. Neither of them commented on the fact that the guest room remained empty.Morning light moved slowly across the floorboards. The house smelled of rain and old paper and the low, constant presence of someone else’s life. Nora sat up, pushed her hair back, and found Eli already in the kitchen, sleeves rolled to the elbows, pouring water into the kettle with the same careful attention he gave everything else.“You stayed,” he said, not turning around.“The rain was loud.”“It usual

**cheaper 5: the distance that keeps closing**
By the sixth day the house had begun to feel less like Eli’s and more like a place the two of them were temporarily sharing with the past.Nora no longer asked permission to open the cabinet. Eli no longer offered explanations before she reached for the next file. They moved around each other with the careful awareness of people who had stopped pretending the air between them was neutral. Every shared silence carried weight. Every accidental brush of hands left a faint afterimage. The recordings continued, but they were no longer the only thing being uncovered. They listened to the remaining files in smaller pieces now. Claire’s voice had grown thinner in the final weeks, more deliberate, as if she were rationing truth the way someone rations water. She spoke of patterns instead of names. Of pressure instead of people. Of a feeling that the danger had learned her routines and was content to wait for the moment she made a mistake.Nora began to recognize the shape of the fear even when

**chapter 6: the latter she finally opened **
The sealed envelope waited until the seventh morning.Nora woke before the light fully entered the house. She had slept on the couch again, though this time she remembered deciding to stay. Eli’s bedroom door remained closed. The throw blanket still smelled faintly of the laundry soap he used. For a long minute she lay still and listened to the quiet, cataloguing the small sounds that had become familiar: the low hum of the refrigerator, the occasional tick of cooling pipes, the distant call of a crow in the trees behind the property. The wooden box sat on the low table where she had left it the night before. The letter inside it had stopped feeling like an object and started feeling like a held breath. She rose, folded the blanket with unnecessary care, and carried the box into the kitchen. The floor was cold under her bare feet. She filled the kettle out of habit, then ignored it. Instead she sat at the table, opened the box, and took out the envelope for what felt like the hundredt

**chapter 7: the night the distance finally broke**
They left the leaning house just before dark. The cassette and the partial photograph traveled with them in the bag at Nora’s feet. The second name remained unspoken, still only a shape. Claire’s warning about closeness sat between them like a third passenger, but neither of them mentioned it again. The kiss in the dusty kitchen had already answered the warning more clearly than words could.Eli drove. Nora watched the trees thicken and the light thin. The road back toward the highway felt longer than the road that had brought them in. Every so often their hands met on the center console and stayed there, fingers loosely linked, the contact no longer tentative.“We’re not going back to Portland tonight,” Eli said after a while.“I know.”“There’s a motel about forty minutes from here. Old, but clean enough.”Nora turned her head and looked at him. The dashboard light caught the line of his jaw and the tired concentration in his eyes. “Okay.”That single word carried more weight than i

**chapter 8: the second name**
Morning arrived slowly in Room 12.Nora woke to the feel of Eli’s hand moving in lazy strokes along her bare spine. For a few seconds she kept her eyes closed and simply existed inside the sensation — warm skin, steady breathing, the quiet weight of an arm that had stayed around her all night. The motel room still smelled faintly of lemon cleaner and the two of them. Outside, a truck idled somewhere in the parking lot, then pulled away. She turned her head on the pillow. Eli was already awake, watching her with an expression so unguarded it made her chest ache.“Hi,” she said, voice still rough from sleep.“Hi.”He leaned in and kissed her, soft and unhurried. There was no heat in it at first — only the quiet confirmation that the night before had been real. Nora’s hand came up to rest against the side of his neck. The kiss deepened by degrees until she felt the same low pull that had undone them hours earlier. When they finally separated, Eli rested his forehead against hers.“We sho

**chapter 9: back to the shop**
They drove south in the late afternoon, the partial photographs and Claire’s newest note sealed in the bag at Nora’s feet. The sky had turned the color of wet slate. Every few miles Eli’s hand found hers on the console and stayed there, thumb moving in slow, absent strokes across her knuckles. The silence between them was no longer empty. It carried the weight of the night in the motel, the dusty kitchen, the two-line message, and the still-unspoken second name.Nora watched the familiar exits begin to appear. Portland was returning. The thought should have felt like safety. Instead it felt like stepping back into a room where someone had been rearranging the furniture while they were gone.“Margaret will have questions,” she said.Eli’s eyes stayed on the road. “I know.”“She’s going to notice I disappeared for days.”“She already noticed. She texted me twice while we were at the house.”Nora turned her head. “You didn’t tell me.”“I didn’t want to give her a reason to look harder un

**chapter 10: the key**
The storage facility sat on the industrial edge of the city, a long row of identical metal units under harsh orange lights. Rain misted down in a fine, steady veil. Eli parked near unit 47B and cut the engine. For a moment neither of them moved. The brass key rested in Nora’s palm, still warm from being held the entire drive.“This is it?” she asked.Eli nodded. “Claire paid the unit in cash for years. Cal mentioned it once, a long time ago, like he wasn’t supposed to. I never came looking until now.”Nora looked at him. “You knew about this place?”“I knew it existed. I didn’t know what she left inside.” He met her eyes. “I wasn’t ready to open every door alone.”The quiet admission settled between them. Nora reached across the console and laced their fingers together. Eli’s grip tightened once, then loosened, as if he were still learning how much pressure was allowed. They stepped out into the mist. The unit’s roll-up door was dented at the bottom and marked with an old inventory st
