Scarlett’s POV.

“You’re seriously throwing me out because you think this necklace is fake?” I asked, placing a hand on my hip and another defensively over my belly. “Since when is that acceptable?”

The two security guards exchanged a quick look, appearing uncomfortable.

I didn’t give them the chance to stumble through a weak excuse. Instead, I reached into my handbag, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen. The digital invitation was already open—I’d expected something like this. I held it up for both guards to see.

“Here’s my name. Here’s the university seal. Here’s the RSVP code they sent me two weeks ago. You want me to scroll through the entire email thread as well?”

A wave of whispers swept through the room. I didn’t bother turning to the growing crowd behind me. “You were saying?” I asked pointedly, eyes locked on the taller guard.

He glanced away. He was cornered and we both knew it.

I took a slow breath, letting the tension in my chest settle low. “So let me ask again: If

Scarlett’s POV.Leon’s hand remained curled around mine, not speaking right away. He just looked at me, gaze assessing. Then he gave the smallest nod.“I should’ve come sooner,” he spoke quietly. “I won’t let you be cornered like that again.”His tone was matter-of-fact, but there was something behind it. It sounded a lot like frustration, regret—and guilt.Taken aback, the smile slipped from my lips. I honestly didn’t know what to say to that, so I just nodded. He added, “From now on, you don’t come to places like this alone. Not since you seem to constantly be the main attraction for bullies. I won’t stand for it anymore.”That stopped me. My chest tightened for a moment, and I wasn’t sure if it was because of what he said, or the way he said it—like it wasn’t up for debate. Like I was someone worth protecting.Across from us, Olivia watched the exchange with a strange softness in her expression. For once, she didn’t crack a joke or roll her eyes. She just gave me a small smile befo

Scarlett’s POV.The silence that followed was notable.I lifted my gaze, scanning the crowd that had gathered around us. Every face was frozen—like they were all holding their breath at once. The man who’d torn the necklace from my neck stood among them, wide-eyed and pale, panic etched across his face.I recognize him now—now that I can see his face clearly. He used to be the class clown, the one who thought it was hilarious to superglue my chair in the middle of a lesson. I normally would shudder at the memory when I thought about it.But right now, with Leon still holding my hand and with the fear in the man’s eyes, I felt grounded.Safe.I smiled to myself, unable to help it. I could have remained quiet and not say anything. But I was fed up with being trampled on.I raised my free hand and pointed straight at him.“It was him.”Leon didn’t say anything as he nodded at one of the bodyguards that came in with him. The bodyguard moved fast, barreling toward the man I’d pointed out.

Scarlett’s POV.The dress wasn’t something I would’ve picked for myself. It was deep green—luxurious fabric that hugged the right places without clinging too much, elegant without being overly flashy. The shoes matched and were surprisingly comfortable, despite the heels being higher than I was used to wearing. And the necklace… I didn’t have the words for it! Gold strands wove together into a delicate chain, set with teardrop-shaped diamonds, resting just above my collarbone. For the first time in a long time–I really felt beautiful.Leon had picked everything out for me.Though I wasn’t particularly excited about the reunion, having him coming with me—I felt a flicker of anticipation.Imagine their reactions when I show up with none other than Leon Rosenthal! However, just as I headed into the hallway with a wide smile on my face, instead of Leon waiting for me—Ezra walked up to me.My smile dropped. “Ezra? Where is Leon?”He straightened slightly and cleared his throat. “Miss Lemai

Scarlett’s POV.As soon as Helena and I parted ways outside the station, I called Olivia. It had been a while since I last saw her, but she picked up on the second ring.“I’m in the mood to complain,” I sighed into the receiver. “Are you free right now?”“I’m always free for complaints,” she replied. “Same place as always?”“Same place.”By the time I got to the bar, she was already there waiting— in the same booth we always sat in near the back, her legs crossed and one eyebrow raised like she already knew something was wrong.“You look like hell,” she said flatly. There were two glasses of water waiting on the table. She picked up one and handed it to me, saying, “Start talking.”“Thanks.” I smiled as I took the glass. She always remembered. I hadn’t been a drinker before the pregnancy, and nothing had changed.Taking a sip on my water, I slid into the seat across from her. “I got an invite to the Glenhurst reunion.”“What?” She sat forward, her expression darkening slightly. “Are y

Leon’s POV.I’d always been able to keep my composure. I was calm under pressure, efficient with conflict, and detached when I needed to be.That control had never been a struggle to me—until Scarlett walked into my life. Now, I find myself reacting to things that wouldn’t normally affect me. The moment she mentioned she’d be having dinner with Caden’s secretary, it stirred something I didn’t care to name. She had joined the company to learn, and that was something I had taken seriously.I expected she would look to me for guidance and structure. Instead, she’d aligned herself with someone loyal to Caden. Not just casually, but willingly. From the way I saw things—if she really was here to grow with work experience as she claimed she wanted, and not for the sake of Caden, she should’ve turned that invitation down. But she had done the complete opposite. This stirred an uneasy feeling inside my chest—one I had to force away. When I got home later that evening, the front lights were
