Chapter 1742

Author: Cozy Season
Debra froze, staring at the man.

The driver walked over and handed her a black card. "Miss, this is a little something from my boss. Really sorry about this."

He shoved it into her hand and got back in the car, giving her no chance to refuse.

"What, money makes him king? Like I don't have cash too," Jordan griped, noticing Debra's distraction. "Did that crash knock you out? Why aren't you talking? Need a hospital?"

Debra glanced at the card in her hand.

"I feel like I've seen him somewhere."

"What? I think your brain's fried. When we get back, I'll have William check you out."

Jordan muttered about bad luck as he opened the car door and nudged her in. If he didn't have stuff to do today, he'd have taught that punk a lesson.

For the rest of the journey, Debra stared at the card, dead quiet.

Jordan noticed her usual silence and took it as an aftershock of the crash.

"You sure you don't need a doctor?"

"I'm good."

Jordan poked his head out the window.

Marion held out a hand. "Care to show me around?"Debra stared at him. That weird feeling hit her again. Before she knew it, her hand was in his.Snapping out of it, she shrugged. "Fine, whatever. Consider today as your lucky day."As soon as they showed up in the park, their appearances immediately grabbed attention. From four in the afternoon, they hit rides hard for four hours. By eight, the lights dimmed.Debra stumbled off the coaster, dizzy, and plopped onto a bench. The park glowed like a fairy tale.Marion took a call and vanished. People trickled out.She sat by the carousel, watching the lights flicker off one by one.Andrew still hadn't shown. She couldn't hide her frustration. She'd had fun with Marion and had tried not to dwell on Andrew bailing. But when she was all alone, the sadness crept in.By the time the fireworks were over, they had only hit half the rides. The wind picked up. It was a bit chilly. The carousel went dark, and the park emptied. She got

"From what I've seen, Andrew's full of it. You say he doesn't lie, but didn't he ditch you today?" Marion sneered."No way. He'd never lie to me. Stop badmouthing him," Debra retorted. She unbuckled, flung the door open, and stormed out.Marion frowned, watching her go aimlessly ahead, and trailed her slowly in the car. Finally, he rolled down the window. "I was talking trash. Get in before you freeze.""Not till you apologize for dissing Andrew."He rubbed his temples. "Fine, I was wrong to judge Andrew. He's honest as they come. Happy now?""That's more like it." She stopped and climbed back into the car.He checked his watch. "What programs would you like to try?""All of them.""Not enough time.""Make them close late. Andrew does it for me all the time."Back when she wanted to play and Andrew was busy, he'd call the park, book it out, and hire actors to warm up.She always got first dibs on everything. If it got late, he'd light the place up and blast the music. He

Andrew looked up after Barton walked out.By afternoon, Debra stood in front of her mirror, twirling in a dress Andrew had given her a few days ago. He'd picked out her clothes since she was little. He always knew what she liked and always spoiled her.She grinned, then sighed. He hadn't taken her out much since they grew up."Miss, someone's here for you.""Got it."She fixed her hair and bolted downstairs. But it wasn't Andrew's car at the gate. It was Marion's.He leaned against it, waiting."What're you doing here? Where's Andrew?" she asked, frowning."He got tied up. Can't make it," Marion replied, opening the door. "He told me to take you to the amusement park and stay till it closes.""No way. I'm not going with you." She spun to leave, but Marion grabbed her arm and pulled her back. She yelped, and the next thing she knew, she was in the car. The seatbelt then clicked on.Her face darkened. "I'm not riding with you.""Look, I'm the one suffering here. I carved out

"Barton," Andrew interrupted. "You're talking too much.""Sorry, sir." Barton winked at Debra before slipping out."Do you really pull a mean face outside?" she teased. "What's that look like? I want to see it."But Andrew stayed chill. "He's making it up. Don't buy it.""Oh? I thought you were different toward me. Guess it's the same for everyone," she said, faking a pout. She snuck a glance, hoping for a reaction. He caught her little game, smiling faintly. "You've been dying to hit that new amusement park. Still wanna go?"Her face lit up. "Didn't you say you were too busy? Did your dad finally cut you some slack? You're taking me?""Yeah," he said. "I can squeeze in some time at three this afternoon.""Three's too late.""There's a fireworks show at night. It's the best I could swing."His tone carried a hint of helplessness. As the future head of the Potter family, his plate was always full. Dylan had gotten lazier over the years, dumping everything on him. Free time wa

Before Debra could process it, Marion marched into the fountain. The water drenched him, clinging to his shirt and showing off every muscle."Forgive me, please," he bellowed.Debra froze, then cracked up after three seconds. Her laughter echoed through the Potter Mansion....The next morning, she barged into Andrew's study, buzzing with excitement."I thought he'd hit me, but he went into the fountain and begged for my forgiveness. You didn't see his face. It was hilarious."Andrew sat at his desk, watching her bounce around. He smiled, "Messing with Marion? You're a first in Seamar City.""All thanks to you." She flopped onto the sofa. "Too bad it's a one-time deal."Her face fell a little. Then she perked up. "You think he'll come after me later?""He won't.""You know him well?""Not really.""Then how do you know he won't? He's got that mean mug, always poker-faced. I doubt any girl would like a guy like that." She grinned at Andrew. "You, on the other hand, are alway

Night deepened.Marion showed up at Andrew's study, but he wasn't there.Marion frowned. When the door clicked shut behind him, he sensed something off and turned to leave. Then he saw Debra blocking the doorway."It's you." His frown deepened. "Move.""Andrew told me to wait for you here," she said, smiling with her hands behind her back."Tell him to come out," he demanded."That won't work. He said tonight you're mine to mess with, however I want.""I don't hit women. Step aside."He stepped forward, but Debra didn't flinch this time. She whipped out a photo and shoved it in his face. "Take a good look. I've got backups. Leave, and this hits every website tomorrow."It was Marion as a kid, dressed up like a girl by Itzel. He looked like a doll, with Itzel flashing a peace sign beside him.Everyone in Seamar City knew how badly she had wanted a daughter. Dwayne had cooked up this dumb idea to make her happy. Marion thought that the photo was locked in the family safe. His

Andrew gently looked at her.Debra tilted her head. "Did I get something on my face?""Hold tight to what you love. Don't let it slip away," he said, ruffling her hair. She grabbed his hand mid-ruffle, firm and sudden. "I'm doing it right now.""Silly girl," he chuckled. He squeezed her hand back, then let go. "I meant the bracelet.""I meant you," she giggled. "Jordan said yesterday I acted like the Potter Mansion is mine even though I'm not married yet. But I grew up here. To me, this is home. Besides my parents, you're the most important person in my life. I'm keeping you close and will never let go.""You'll meet lots of people in life," he said. "Someday, someone else might matter more.""Sure, I'll meet tons of people. But there's only one you. You're the most important to me."Her eyes shone with certainty. For a split second, Andrew wavered."What do you think of Marion?" he asked, looking away."He sucks. Picked on me right off the bat. I hate him," she huffed. She

Sunlight streamed into the study, warming every corner.Andrew sat in his chair, dressed in a crisp white shirt. He flipped through a book casually until Debra burst in."Where were you last night?" she demanded, plopping onto the sofa. "You won't believe how awful Marion was. Dwayne and Yvette are so nice. How did they end up with a jerk like him? If you'd been there, you'd have had my back."Andrew didn't say a word. Debra whipped her head around to glare at him. "I got picked on. Why aren't you reacting?""I'm listening," he said, closing his book with a faint smile. "Sounds like you don't like him.""Yep. He is my least favorite person on Earth." She puffed up, fuming. "Even my parents never treated me like that. Who does he think he is?""Our princess is getting feistier every day," Andrew teased, tapping the bell on his desk.Barton came in with tea, setting it in front of Debra."Thanks, Barton," she said."No problem." He left the cup and stepped out.Andrew said, "If

Itzel turned to Debra, wrapping an arm around her. "Marion just got back from abroad. He didn't mean to pick on you. I'm sorry on his behalf. Let's head in. It's too cold out here. You don't wanna get sick."Debra nodded and followed her inside. In the hall, Gael glared at Dwayne. "Did you send your son to bully my girl?""No way," Dwayne replied, raising a glass of wine with a gentlemanly smile. "I watched Debra grow up. Chill. I'll give him a talking-to later and make it up to her."Lori forced a smile. That would be a sight. Marion looked sturdy, but she wasn't sure if he could take a hit.Debra showered off. Her perfect makeup was gone, and her dress was soaked.Jordan waited outside her room. When she stepped out in a dress Itzel lent her, her nose and eyes were red from crying. She had always been treasured and had never been treated like this.Jordan sighed, "Stop crying. You look awful.""I know," Debra wailed, then sniffled. "If I hadn't gone to find you, I wouldn't
