Chapter 501

Author: Cozy Season
"The first aid kit is here," the maid announced, placing the kit in front of Debra.

Erica and Randy rushed in, their faces etched with concern. Erica took one look at the disarray and instantly knew who the so-called 'robber' was.

She offered, "Take my car. The ambulance could take forever to get here."

"Okay." Debra nodded, swiftly instructing the security guards to carry Juan into the car.

At the hospital, doctors swiftly began emergency treatment on Juan.

Erica and Debra sat on a bench.

"He'll pull through. The doctor said the wound wasn't critical."

"But excessive blood loss can still be fatal. Where's Randy?"

Debra rubbed her temples, her voice laced with worry.

"He had something urgent to attend to."

"He went to find Marion, didn't he?"

They both knew Marion was behind the attack. His reckless, impulsive actions had left Juan fighting for his life. Though the knife had missed any vital organs, the risk of complications lingered like a dark shadow.

The doctor emerged

Debra cast a glance at Juan, his form still and silent on the hospital bed."I'll come back when he's better."With that, she turned on her heel and walked out of the ward.As the door clicked shut behind her, Juan's eyes fluttered open.Joe was totally surprised."Sir, you're awake.""Help me sit up."Juan's voice was hoarse. Joe quickly assisted him, propping pillows behind his back."Sir, is this an act?"Juan remained silent, his mind replaying the events. The security alarm had blared early, a warning that only Debra could have triggered. When the intruders burst in, Juan could have easily evaded the knife, but he hadn't. He had taken the blow deliberately, gambling on Debra's reaction.A wry smile tugged at the corners of Juan's mouth."She must still care for me."Joe hesitated before speaking. "Mrs. Nichols used to love you so deeply. If you're hurt, she'd definitely be concerned.""Concerned?" Juan muttered. "If she cared, she wouldn't have left."His face was p

"Have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if you left evidence behind? You promised me you wouldn't take these risks again," Debra said.Today, Marion had shown up with a motley crew of hardened men she'd never seen before. But she knew from her past life that Marion had an ulterior motive for coming to Seamar City. His sights were set on Juan, the biggest obstacle standing between him and total control of the city. She just hadn't expected so many twists and turns this time around, but Marion's goal remained steadfast, and his forces were more formidable than ever.If any of these men were caught, Marion could be doomed. She couldn't bear the thought. She looked at Marion, waiting for an explanation, but he remained silent as a statue."You have other business in Seamar City, don't you?" she pressed.Marion finally nodded. "Yes."Debra's voice grew colder, her frustration bubbling to the surface."You've already conquered overseas, yet you're still here, vying f

The villa stood before them, an unassuming façade tucked away in an affluent neighborhood where each residence was worth a small fortune.Despite its prime location, the house bore an air of neglect, as if it were rarely inhabited.Debra raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't have pegged this as your style."Andrew coughed a little, his face pale. He pulled out a key and unlocked the door."This isn't my house.""If it's not yours, why do you have the key?""A friend entrusted it to me."There were very few people in Seamar City whom Andrew considered friends. Debra immediately thought of Marion. The interior was a stark contrast to the exterior, elegantly appointed with a taste that hinted at a bygone era. It was impeccably maintained, as if someone regularly cared for it.Andrew noticed her puzzled expression and offered an explanation."I have someone come in to clean periodically. It hasn't changed much over the years.""Is this where Marion used to live?"Marion had never ment

Debra hadn't allowed herself to dwell on the car accident that had claimed her parents' lives and left her an orphan at such a tender age.She had always assumed it was just a tragic accident. But now, as she sat across from Andrew, the past came roaring back, shrouded in a sinister new light."Marion's parents didn't die in that accident," Andrew said. "It was all a ruse. Marion's mother, Itzel, survived. Caleb sent her abroad to keep the truth hidden and to ensure she could give birth in peace. Soon after, Marion was born."Debra's mind reeled. Rumors had painted Itzel Houston as a vengeful mistress, driven mad by her illegitimacy and resentment towards the Houston family. But on the cruise ship, Marion had confessed that these were merely rumors. Itzel was no mistress, but Dwayne's rightful wife."Who wanted to kill Marion's parents?" Debra asked, her voice urgent. "And what does this have to do with my parents' deaths?"Andrew toyed with a ring on his finger, his expression t

Andrew's face was ashen. "It's pointless even if you knew. It wouldn't change anything. It's better to live your life in peace."Debra's eyes flashed with determination. "I'm the heiress to the Frazier family. I have the right to know everything."Andrew sighed, leaning against the table to keep his balance. "I can tell you about the Four Major Families, but I don't know who killed your parents. I've investigated for years, and I still don't know who was behind the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Houston."Debra searched Andrew's eyes and found no trace of deceit. She took a deep breath before asking, "Do you know everything about the Four Major Families?"Andrew nodded. "I know the general outline of the past grudges and disputes. The Houston family had military power and absolute authority. The Potter family had the most powerful intelligence network. Under the leadership of your great-grandfather, the Frazier family was renowned for its strategic prowess. The Osborne family, originally t

"So, what about Juan? Why does Marion have it out for him?"Debra's mind whirred with memories of her past life. Marion had swept into Seamar City like a storm, quickly becoming Juan's fiercest rival. Their competition was legendary, their battles subtle yet fierce.Marion was undoubtedly Juan's most formidable opponent. Debra clenched her fists, her nerves taut."Is it...""No," Andrew cut her off, anticipating her question. He explained, "Marion has his suspicions, but no concrete evidence. The Nichols family isn't one of the Four Major Families. Their rise caught everyone off guard.""But the Nichols family has been established for a century.""The family tree doesn't lie. The Nichols family gained power under the leadership of Juan's grandfather. It peaked during his father's reign, and under Juan, their influence has become immense."Andrew coughed. "Could you get me a glass of water?"Realizing he'd been talking for a while, Debra quickly poured him a glass and handed it

"Maybe.""Do you truly not know who killed my parents?"Andrew hesitated, then shook his head. "I don't."Debra helped Andrew to the car, and the driver got him in the backseat.Debra's mind was a whirlwind of questions and doubts. Sleep would be elusive tonight."Can you take me to our old house?""Address."Debra pulled out her phone and sent the address to Andrew, who relayed it to the driver."Drive.""Yes, sir."Tucked away in the heart of the city, it had been years since Debra last set foot there. According to family rules, visits were reserved for the New Year, and since her father's passing, she had lived with Ralph. The main estate that had only accommodated the older generations was a stranger to her now. The villa stood abandoned, its grandeur faded. The night wind bit at her, and she wrapped Andrew's coat tighter around herself. The yard was overgrown and neglected, but security was surprisingly tight.Debra pushed Andrew's wheelchair up to the door, pulling o

Andrew turned to look at Debra, his gaze assessing.Debra asked, "Is something wrong?"Andrew pressed her lips into a thin line, reaching out to button up Debra's coat."It's cold. Go home.""Alright."Even in his wool sweater, Andrew looked drawn.Debra whispered, "I'm sorry for troubling you today."She should have realized that Andrew wasn't well. The late-night chill was biting, and she had selfishly dragged him out there to satisfy her curiosity."Curiosity is natural," Andrew said, reading her thoughts. "If I hadn't brought you tonight, you probably wouldn't have slept well."Debra wheeled him forward. After a moment of silence, she asked, "Is your family's ancestral hall like ours?""Similar," Andrew replied. "Our families are locals. The Houstons and the Osbornes came later."Debra nodded. "Could there be secrets hidden in the ancestral hall that we don't know about?"Andrew's tone was noncommittal. "Maybe."Debra understood the subtext. If there were any secrets t

Night settled in deep.Debra and the crew were still waiting for Michael's reply."Still nothing? They don't buy it, do they?" Erica paced, antsy."Give it time. They'll bite," Debra said, clutching her phone. She had promised Kale she would bring Drake back. No breaking that.A text finally pinged her phone. It was Michael.Everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Like Debra said, the Illuminati couldn't rule out her having the real stone. If theirs was fake, Michael and his crew couldn't afford the fallout."Marion, it's on you now," Debra said. The Houston family had military muscle on tap. The Potter family owned elite guards and intel. Erica and Randy were solid backups. But this meeting? Debra had to go herself."Does it have to be now? Maybe wait till you're healed?" Erica said.Debra shook her head. "Drake is at risk every day he's with them. I can't take that chance. Just like they can't risk us holding the stone.""She's right," Randy jumped in. "What're you looking at?" Lara asked, stepping out and spotting Michael by the window."Debra says the stone Drake gave us is fake," he replied."What? No way." Drake shot up from his seat."Are you messing with us?" Lara's sharp gaze landed on him."No. Debra's talking nonsense," Drake insisted."We'll see," Michael said, unruffled.Debra was offering the stone on the condition of meeting with their leader. It fit her style."She thinks she can just waltz in and see our master?" Lara sneered."The stone's a big deal to him. I bet he'll agree," Michael replied, shutting his phone."Don't tell me you're sweet on Debra," she hissed. "You keep letting her off. Don't wanna kill her, huh?""Unlike you, I don't get off on killing," he countered. "If she's not in my way, why bother? You're out there slaughtering, just making enemies for the Illuminati. You're venting rather than serving.""You don't get it. I'm building fear for the Illuminati," she justified herself. "They need to

Oscar set down the receiver and threw his hands up. "I'm not resisting. Don't spook my staff," he said.Chace tried to step in, but Oscar's look stopped him. This incident was major. Almost half of Flesta's people had fallen victim.Everyone at the company, Chace included, got hauled in for questioning. As the head, Oscar was the main target. The line went dead, and Debra's heart sank."Those bastards," Randy cursed, "hitting us on both sides. No wonder the Illuminati has been quiet. They have been gunning for our partners.""They're smart," Debra said. "Can't take us head-on, so they go after our allies. They want everyone to see partnering with us as a dead end. If we let this slide, we're doomed eventually.""What should we do?" Erica stomped, fuming. "We just sit here and watch them pick off our friends one by one?""They're showing us what happens if we cross them. They want us to bow. The only way out is to flip the script and strike first.""Strike first? What does th

Seeing Debra's worried look, Marion said, "You should just focus on healing and leave the rest to us. We might not match the Illuminati, but they won't mess with us randomly here in Seamar City."The Four Great Families had ruled Seamar City for a century. Although the former heads had faded, the new generation was sharper and stronger. They could hold off the Illuminati's push.Debra's phone rang. It was Oscar calling."You free? I've got something to tell you," he said.Debra put it on the speaker. No one could guess the aim of his call.In Flesta, the Odom family's business was booming again. He should have been busy with work."What's up?" she asked."There's big trouble in Flesta," he replied. "We didn't want to bug you, but it's spiraling out of control. We're out of moves.""What happened?" She had a bad feeling.Oscar paused. "A new drug has popped up in Flesta. Tons of our staff got hooked, just like regular folks. The police are on it now. I'll make sure of it.""No matter what happens, we're in this together," he said.Exhaustion took over. She closed her eyes and drifted off. When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her injury kept her from moving much.Everyone gathered outside her bedroom. William came in to check on her."You're fine. Just change the dressings on time," he said, packing up his kit. William left quickly.Marion got up to lock the door and returned to the bedside.Sitting back into the chair, he switched on a dim lamp, making sure Debra would see him first thing if she woke up."Brother..." Debra mumbled.Marion leaned in. "I'm here."Her murmurs stopped, but her hands shot up, grasping at the air. "It's so dark. Save me."He grabbed her flailing hands right away. "Don't be scared. I'm right here."But she didn't calm down. She clutched his hand, her nails scratching at his skin. "Brother, save me," she murmured, feeling like she was trapped in a pitch-black hold.Cold seawater seemed to swallow her whole. The biting chill seeped into every crack of her body. The stench of the ocean made her gag.The water was up to her chin. She stood on tiptoes, desperate for a breath in that tiny space."Save me." Her eyes flew open.Familiar surroundings came into view. Her pupils darted until they landed on Marion. Her racing heart finally slowed."Marion?" Her v

Erica gawked.Debra was supposed to recover in the hospital, but seeing her unconscious form on the stretcher, Erica figured he had his reasons."Let's go back," Jordan chimed in. "The Potter Mansion's got a top-notch medical team. If we need gear, I'll grab it.""Yeah, hospitals suck anyway," Randy said. "Let's head back. It's freezing out here."They'd planned to grab food and head in, but Erica had made them wait so Marion could have more time with Debra. Now they were all sniffling."I'm... Achoo." William sneezed again, then bolted for the car. "I'm out of there. It's freaking cold."He had treated so many patients, but this was the first time he had fallen ill.Debra, still out cold, was loaded into the back. She was puzzled.Inside, the operating room's red light glowed.Marion arrived first. The hospital director greeted him, saying, "Mrs. Houston is in surgery now. Our top doctors have assessed her. The wound's been handled perfectly, and she is out of danger."Marion's face softened a bit. Erica heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. She's fine now."They'd been terrified seeing Debra collapse in a pool of blood."You're wiped out. Why don't you rest a bit?" It will take two hours to get back, so she'll have to tough it out," Michael ordered, unfazed. Before leaving with his crew, he lamented sanctimoniously, "Such a shame, ruining a pretty face like that."Lara clenched her fists, incandescent with rage....In the ambulance, Debra coughed up another mouthful of blood. It splattered right onto William's white coat."Aw." William almost griped about the mess, holding back only at the sight of her bad condition. He had to save her, no matter what. It was a promise he'd made to Andrew. He didn't even want to think about what would happen to him if Debra didn't make it today."Maybe another shot of painkiller?
