Chapter 917

Author: Cozy Season
"How is that possible? This place is crawling with your people," Debra said, taking a couple of steps forward.

She caught a glimpse of a black car about 100 meters away. It was Marion, and she felt reassured.

According to the tradition, Drake put a masquerade mask on Debra and wore a half mask on his face.

Debra braced herself as they entered the gala. She had been to one such event before, so she wasn't as shocked this time.

Drake said, "Hold onto my arm tightly, or I can't guarantee your safety."

His words put Debra on high alert.

Inside the venue, everything seemed normal at first, but she noticed that all the guests were men. There were no women, and the men were eyeing her lustfully.

This made her uncomfortable, and she tightened her grip on Drake's arm.

Across town at the Eaton Mansion, Juan watched as Garland struggled to do a handstand against the wall.

Garland's face was flushed red as he groaned, "Are we done yet?"

"Not yet."

"How much longer?"

"Three more hours.

Melody had been staying with them for days, refusing to leave. She claimed to be looking for Juan, but her actions suggested otherwise. She was constantly cooking and making tea for Bert, reminiscing about old times.Anyone with eyes could see her true intentions. However, Bert was still devoted to his late wife and would never be swayed by Melody.Juan replied, "Focus on your studies. Don't ask unnecessary questions."Just then, Liza's screams echoed through the house. "Dad! I want to break off the engagement with Drake."Garland covered his ears. "Don't mind her. That's my sister. She's always been spoiled. Just avoid her."Juan paid no attention until Liza shouted, "Dad, you must help me teach Debra a lesson. Not satisfied with having Marion, she is now seducing Drake. This is outrageous."Juan's eyes narrowed at the mention of Debra.Garland muttered, "Debra..."The name rang a bell. It seemed to be the woman who bought his news agency in Seamar City.Juan stood up and wa

Liza was annoyed by Melody's intimate way of addressing her father. "What has it got to do with you?"Melody wanted to retort, but Bert interjected, "Alright, I'll take care of it.""I'm only thinking of what's best for Liza," Melody muttered. "To be honest, Juan gave up his company for Debra. I came all the way here to make sure she pays for what she's done. We've been friends for so many years, Bert, and this is your territory. You must help me."Liza frowned. It was true that she wanted to teach Debra a lesson, but she didn't want Melody to meddle. She clung to Bert's arm and said, "My dad will stand up for me. Just stay out of it."She insisted on going to the banquet right away and catching Debra red-handed.Bert indulged her and ordered Carter to prepare the car.Across town outside the Legacy Hotel, Marion stared at the entrance and frowned.Through his Bluetooth earpiece, a subordinate's voice came through. "Sir, they have signal interference equipment in the hotel, and

"Drake, slow down."Drake didn't respond but slowed his steps slightly. In the center of the second floor was a large platform, usually reserved for performances. Today, however, Drake had a three-seater sofa placed there."Sit," he said.Suspicion clouded Debra's expression. "You're not planning to pull some kind of prank on me, are you?"Drake smirked, "Your life's already in my hands. Why would I bother?"Debra took her seat, while Drake snapped his fingers, the sharp sound echoing in the room. She cocked her head, eyeing him warily. "What's this? A magic show?"Suddenly, all the lights went out. Marion slipped into the venue unnoticed, his presence as silent as a shadow. The crowd didn't panic. Instead, a strange, festive atmosphere settled over the place.Drake's voice came from somewhere behind Debra. "I once told you I'd show you a glimpse of the future. Tonight, consider it a preview of the Lowe Playground. Since we're partners now, I figured it's only fair to show yo

Just as Drake was about to shout One, footsteps suddenly echoed from outside the banquet hall.Drake wrinkled his brow. Kale rushed up, exclaiming, "Boss, the Eatons are here.""What?" Drake was taken aback.Seeing people already entering the banquet hall, he quickly grabbed Debra and pushed her into Kale's arms. "Take her away.""Yes, boss." Kale dragged Debra toward a nearby corridor."My shoe!" Debra's shoe had accidentally fallen.Drake spotted it and kicked it under the sofa. But the people on the first floor couldn't escape in time.Bert entered with Liza, only to be greeted by a lurid scene.Liza, who had never witnessed such a spectacle, screamed and covered her eyes.Bert commanded angrily, "Clear the place!"Carter immediately went into action with the bodyguards. The guests present were all Drake's clients who never expected Bert to suddenly appear. Their enthusiasm vanished, and they hurriedly left, while the women arranged by Drake scattered in panic.Seeing th

"Miss Eaton, you are joking," Drake said. "Look around. She is not here."He leaned in slightly, his voice cool and deliberate. "If you don't believe me, feel free to search the place.""You must have hidden her somewhere," Liza snorted, turning to Bert. "Dad, you saw everything. This man here is unfaithful and despicable. I will never marry someone like him."Bert let out a measured breath, turning to Drake. "Liza is my dearest daughter. When I agreed to this marriage, it was because you seemed like a promising young man with sincerity. But now, it's clear that you're unfit to be her husband. Consider this engagement annulled."Drake tried to argue, "I...""There's no need to explain," Bert interrupted. "While this marriage won't proceed, business is another matter. To compensate for any loss of face this decision may bring to the Lowe family, I'll ensure our partnership remains intact."Drake's tense features relaxed into calmness. He had long grown weary of Liza's spoiled, ent

Debra's breath hitched in her throat. If Drake came in now, Frederic would be doomed.Outside, Kale said, "Boss, I have a room card. Why don't we just go in?"Drake ignored him and demanded again, "Debra, I'm being very polite right now. Don't make me break down the door."Debra glanced at Frederic, who already had his gun drawn. She quickly reached out and pressed down on his hand, shouting toward the door, "Just a moment."Drake picked up on the tremor in her voice. "What's going on? Is someone with you?"Debra's heart skipped a beat. "No, I'm taking a bath.""At such a point? You think I'm that gullible?" Drake scoffed, his patience wearing thin. "Hurry up, or I'm coming in.""Boss, don't waste time with her. She's been holed up in there for ages. Something's definitely up," Kale said, swiftly using the room card to open the door. The room was empty, but the bathroom door was tightly shut.Debra's panicked voice echoed from the bathroom. Debra casually sat down on the nearby sofa and poured herself a glass of wine."My clothes are wet. I can't wear them. Get me something new.""How did your clothes get wet?""I didn't take them off before getting in the bath."Drake was just about to ask more questions when he turned around and saw Debra acting as if she owned the place.Taking a deep breath, he asked almost existentially, "Are you even a woman?""Of course, I am. 100% certified," Debra answered matter-of-factly, glancing at him. "You have the nerve to watch me bathe. What do I have to feel embarrassed about?"Drake was stifled by her retort. A tight knot of irritation coiled in his chest, and he shouted toward the door, "Kale, bring Mrs. Houston a change of clothes."Debra chimed in, "Something lightweight, please."Drake laughed, though there was no humor in it. "You've got the nerve to make demands? Do you have any idea how expensive that dress is?"She flashed a sly smile. "Oh, come on. A man of your stat

The car ride back to the Lowe Mansion was filled with heavy silence. Debra, forced to wear handcuffs and a blindfold, heard nothing but the hum of the engine. She decided to break the silence."Feeling down?""Shut up.""What happened after Mr. Eaton Sr. showed up?""Want me to sew your mouth shut?"Debra couldn't help but feel a twinge of satisfaction at Drake's anger. It was clear that his engagement to Liza was on the rocks. Without the Eaton family's support, Drake's business there would crumble. It wouldn't take more than a week for their operations to fold, and those business owners, who had been trying to curry favor with him, would have to reassess their strategies.Drake's foul mood was understandable."Boss, tonight's events were suspicious," Kale said. "Miss Eaton mentioned that a maid told her about Mrs. Houston accompanying you to the banquet. Should we investigate it?""Of course," Drake said. "Find that maid and bring her to my study. Night settled in deep.Debra and the crew were still waiting for Michael's reply."Still nothing? They don't buy it, do they?" Erica paced, antsy."Give it time. They'll bite," Debra said, clutching her phone. She had promised Kale she would bring Drake back. No breaking that.A text finally pinged her phone. It was Michael.Everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Like Debra said, the Illuminati couldn't rule out her having the real stone. If theirs was fake, Michael and his crew couldn't afford the fallout."Marion, it's on you now," Debra said. The Houston family had military muscle on tap. The Potter family owned elite guards and intel. Erica and Randy were solid backups. But this meeting? Debra had to go herself."Does it have to be now? Maybe wait till you're healed?" Erica said.Debra shook her head. "Drake is at risk every day he's with them. I can't take that chance. Just like they can't risk us holding the stone.""She's right," Randy jumped in. "Drag this out, and who

"What're you looking at?" Lara asked, stepping out and spotting Michael by the window."Debra says the stone Drake gave us is fake," he replied."What? No way." Drake shot up from his seat."Are you messing with us?" Lara's sharp gaze landed on him."No. Debra's talking nonsense," Drake insisted."We'll see," Michael said, unruffled.Debra was offering the stone on the condition of meeting with their leader. It fit her style."She thinks she can just waltz in and see our master?" Lara sneered."The stone's a big deal to him. I bet he'll agree," Michael replied, shutting his phone."Don't tell me you're sweet on Debra," she hissed. "You keep letting her off. Don't wanna kill her, huh?""Unlike you, I don't get off on killing," he countered. "If she's not in my way, why bother? You're out there slaughtering, just making enemies for the Illuminati. You're venting rather than serving.""You don't get it. I'm building fear for the Illuminati," she justified herself. "They need to

Oscar set down the receiver and threw his hands up. "I'm not resisting. Don't spook my staff," he said.Chace tried to step in, but Oscar's look stopped him. This incident was major. Almost half of Flesta's people had fallen victim.Everyone at the company, Chace included, got hauled in for questioning. As the head, Oscar was the main target. The line went dead, and Debra's heart sank."Those bastards," Randy cursed, "hitting us on both sides. No wonder the Illuminati has been quiet. They have been gunning for our partners.""They're smart," Debra said. "Can't take us head-on, so they go after our allies. They want everyone to see partnering with us as a dead end. If we let this slide, we're doomed eventually.""What should we do?" Erica stomped, fuming. "We just sit here and watch them pick off our friends one by one?""They're showing us what happens if we cross them. They want us to bow. The only way out is to flip the script and strike first.""Strike first? What does th

Seeing Debra's worried look, Marion said, "You should just focus on healing and leave the rest to us. We might not match the Illuminati, but they won't mess with us randomly here in Seamar City."The Four Great Families had ruled Seamar City for a century. Although the former heads had faded, the new generation was sharper and stronger. They could hold off the Illuminati's push.Debra's phone rang. It was Oscar calling."You free? I've got something to tell you," he said.Debra put it on the speaker. No one could guess the aim of his call.In Flesta, the Odom family's business was booming again. He should have been busy with work."What's up?" she asked."There's big trouble in Flesta," he replied. "We didn't want to bug you, but it's spiraling out of control. We're out of moves.""What happened?" She had a bad feeling.Oscar paused. "A new drug has popped up in Flesta. Tons of our staff got hooked, just like regular folks. The police are on it now. Debra stared at the pendant. What had happened yesterday came flooding back.Kale was gone, and the fact hit her hard."It's my fault," she said in agony. "If he hadn't gone with me, he would have been alive.""Everyone makes their calls," Marion soothed her. "If there's blame, it's on the Illuminati. I was terrified, almost losing you.""I felt like you were nearby, so I wasn't afraid," she said, leaning into him. "They'll pay for hurting Drake and killing Kale. I'll make sure of it.""No matter what happens, we're in this together," he said.Exhaustion took over. She closed her eyes and drifted off. When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her injury kept her from moving much.Everyone gathered outside her bedroom. William came in to check on her."You're fine. Just change the dressings on time," he said, packing up his kit. "You guys can come in now."Debra adjusted her clothes and leaned against the headboard. "Sorry to trouble you.""We're in this together,"

William left quickly.Marion got up to lock the door and returned to the bedside.Sitting back into the chair, he switched on a dim lamp, making sure Debra would see him first thing if she woke up."Brother..." Debra mumbled.Marion leaned in. "I'm here."Her murmurs stopped, but her hands shot up, grasping at the air. "It's so dark. Save me."He grabbed her flailing hands right away. "Don't be scared. I'm right here."But she didn't calm down. She clutched his hand, her nails scratching at his skin. "Brother, save me," she murmured, feeling like she was trapped in a pitch-black hold.Cold seawater seemed to swallow her whole. The biting chill seeped into every crack of her body. The stench of the ocean made her gag.The water was up to her chin. She stood on tiptoes, desperate for a breath in that tiny space."Save me." Her eyes flew open.Familiar surroundings came into view. Her pupils darted until they landed on Marion. Her racing heart finally slowed."Marion?" Her v

Not long after, Marion came out with Debra.William nudged Erica and Randy. "Told you it would be soon.""How's she out here fresh after surgery?" Erica gawked.Debra was supposed to recover in the hospital, but seeing her unconscious form on the stretcher, Erica figured he had his reasons."Let's go back," Jordan chimed in. "The Potter Mansion's got a top-notch medical team. If we need gear, I'll grab it.""Yeah, hospitals suck anyway," Randy said. "Let's head back. It's freezing out here."They'd planned to grab food and head in, but Erica had made them wait so Marion could have more time with Debra. Now they were all sniffling."I'm... Achoo." William sneezed again, then bolted for the car. "I'm out of there. It's freaking cold."He had treated so many patients, but this was the first time he had fallen ill.Debra, still out cold, was loaded into the back. She was puzzled.Inside, the operating room's red light glowed.Marion arrived first. The hospital director greeted him, saying, "Mrs. Houston is in surgery now. Our top doctors have assessed her. The wound's been handled perfectly, and she is out of danger."Marion's face softened a bit. Erica heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. She's fine now."They'd been terrified seeing Debra collapse in a pool of blood."You're wiped out. Why don't you rest a bit?" And you've got the nerve to question me?"Lara glared at him, her body aching from the burns. Her face twisted with anger."Take Miss Sharp back for treatment. It will take two hours to get back, so she'll have to tough it out," Michael ordered, unfazed. Before leaving with his crew, he lamented sanctimoniously, "Such a shame, ruining a pretty face like that."Lara clenched her fists, incandescent with rage....In the ambulance, Debra coughed up another mouthful of blood. It splattered right onto William's white coat."Aw." William almost griped about the mess, holding back only at the sight of her bad condition. He had to save her, no matter what. It was a promise he'd made to Andrew. He didn't even want to think about what would happen to him if Debra didn't make it today."Maybe another shot of painkiller? We've gotta get that bullet out fast," a medic suggested."Yo
