CHAPTER 8–DAMIEN’S NEW POSITION

Location: Carolyn and Neil’s Suite

Carolyn disconnected the call with April and looked at Neil over her shoulder with an amused smile.

“Would you look at this, Neil? It’s a pen with ink that disappears. She plans to sign the post-nuptial agreement with it. What do you think?” Carolyn asked her fiancé.

“I’m glad I’m marrying you for love and not for money. Your friend has made you into a dangerous woman. I’d never stand a chance at survival in the legal system or life.”

“Wait, I thought you liked April.”

“I do. I like her as a friend. And I’d prefer to keep her as one. It terrifies me to think of her as an enemy. David has a death wish and he’s welcome to it.”

“He’s attacking my business now and April.”

“Fine. You won’t be happy until you know both have back up. Am I right?”

“Oh, you know me too well.”

“You call the wedding planner and do you magic about this … pen. I’ll call Damien. It won’t be difficult to have him running to her side.”

“I don’t want another serial cheater chasing her Neil. She’s married to one right now. April doesn’t deserve that.”

“Caro, honey. Does he have a plus one? No. Ask yourself why? Never mind, I’ll explain. That playboy nonsense is all for his father’s ego. You’ve seen how his father influenced everyone around him. People molded their lives to fit how he saw them. Damien, the playboy, ne’er-do-well. He’s never been that, but no one would believe you if you tried to explain it. No one will believe it. They laugh when he says he must take a call for work. But he does work and he’s successful. His father won’t allow him to talk about it. If he does, then he’ll risk losing his inheritance. Twisted, huh?”

“But the women in the media?”

“That’s smoke and mirrors. He’s not dating them. If he found a woman, I think he’d be happy to toss it all aside. Damien wants a woman who’s on his level, which he’s not found. He’s convinced April is a woman on that level and she got away.”

“Oh, boy. Call him. This should be entertaining.”

                              *****        *****        *****

“Hello? Neil? I was just heading for bed. Is something wrong?” Damien wasn’t going to bed. But he didn’t tell Neil that. He was glad he got rid of the other call when he did. Any slower, he’d have missed Neil’s call. Damien hadn’t had the chance to dry his hair or style it. At this rate, he’d have to wash it again and start again. This was another reason he’d argued with his stylist about this change. It appeared perfect, modern, and man-of-the-moment. But the upkeep wasn’t practical.

“Yeah, about that. I need some help. Well, we need help. The truth is April needs help with stuff, but she won’t ask. Caro’s worried because it’s become a problem for their business.” Neil said through the phone. Damien half listened until he heard Neil mention April. Then Neil had all of Damien’s attention and his brain was like that giant, hungry dog running into the kitchen with the glossy tile floors in cartoons. Drooling tongue, huge, flying paws, with claws scraping on tiles, but finding no purchase. Yes, he’d gone there. The space for rent sign had gone out and someone had lost it already. Thank God, he was alone in his suite, or he would have humiliated himself.

“Wait what? What’s going on? Has he gone after the business further?” He tried to recover from his gaffe. What had he missed? Damien moved to speed up his routine and get it done, while he played damage control with the situation on the phone. The game of keeping the cursing to a minimum. Or keep it silent. Caro was often at this hour in the background. They tried to turn it down around them, so they had practice for when children started cropping up. Which had started months ago, when Carl Johannes knocked up his girlfriend of six years. That led to a fast wedding, twin boys, a condo, and the entire social crowd rethinking where their lives are going. There’s more. That’s what people are saying.

“Yes, we thought we’d stopped it with April pushing him for a divorce. He’s trying to push to gain shares in the business through the divorce. April thought the prenuptial agreement solved it. David introduced a new demand.” Neil said. He didn’t sound impressed with David’s actions. Or impressed with David’s attempt at grabbing power within a company he’d no connection with beyond being married to April.

“What’s he demanded?” Damien asked. He couldn’t express his feelings over this. This isn’t something you drop on your partner. It’s something you discuss and have lawyers involved in. He’s asking to have this go wrong. Damien shook his head, amazed at the gross errors he saw happening before him. Any lawyer worth his weight in salt knew never to represent themselves and always have representation. He knew April mentioned having more than a lawyer. She’d planned her exit like a lady planned a southern ball. An entire season ahead of time.

“He won’t sign the divorce papers unless she signs a post-nuptial agreement granting him half of her part of the business.” Neil said the next words as if he ripped off a bandage he dreaded to remove. Damien could hear his sneer as he spoke. He heard Caro throw something in the background. Because Damien heard Caro make a frustrated noise and a crashing sound.

“That greedy jerk. Have Caro and April not found proof that he’s somehow taken money from their business?”

“He took money that belonged to April. It’s a mess. David accessed an account that contained money that April stored money she’d earmarked for investment into the business. She replaced it, but the balance wasn’t small or replaced without making concessions. I didn’t hear what he did with it or if she recovered any. It would surprise me if she saw a dime of it.”

“He did this, are you sure? After leaving marks like that on her? Now he’s threatening her and dragging out their marriage? After showing up with Chloe like that. He’s done too many drugs over the years. I can’t see any other reason for his erratic behaviour. It doesn’t make any other sense. Chloe’s not trading up in any sense of the word. What do you need me to do?”

“Keep her safe. Help her keep the business safe. David will do everything he can to be horrible to her. Caro’s worried. She won’t go on our honeymoon unless she knows both the business and April are safe.”

“Neil, it’s okay. You can tell Caro I promise to watch April and her business for her. You’ll be the first person I call if anything goes wrong.”

“No. I’m told you must try harder. It’s not enough. You’re not allowed to be a cheating creep, because she’s had one already and doesn’t need another.”

“Oh, right? Fine. Neil, you tell your fiancé she doesn’t need to worry over anything. If her best friend deigns, to give me the time of day. I’ll give it my best to not repeat David’s obvious blunders. Wow, I’m unsure what to call some things he’s done.”

“Bull, the man’s a man-whore and weak one at that. Don’t try. Just don’t do what he does. Or we’ll kill you. Understand? I’m sick of this.”

“I’ll do my best to keep her safe and your business. Okay?”

“Yes, but you can’t tell her we asked you. She’d never accept help. April had many people turn on her. Maybe too many. So, don’t let it surprise you if she resists letting you in.    It’s her way of protecting herself. After David, she hasn’t accepted to many more into her life.”

“It’s alright. I’ll grow on her. You’ll see when you get back from your honeymoon.”

“Please be a rose and not a fungus among us.”

“Okay, you’re sleeping on the sofa. No, the floor. Yes, the floor. Fungus among us. Neil! What are you, twelve?”

“Okay, I’ll let you deal with that Fun Gal issue. I appear to have my own.” Damien said to Neil. He half joked with his friend and realized for the first time; he meant it. Damien had similar issues. He must dress to see if April is safe. Or if she needs saving right now.

“What do you mean you must be seen in the photos with April, David? That makes no sense.” Chloe couldn’t believe him. He stood and left her there with everyone watched. He insisted he should sit with April, his ex-wife, at the Wedding Breakfast of her best friend. Because he changed the rules of their marriage so he would gain control of April’s company. Chloe didn’t like David anywhere near April or his interest in watching her. Damien and Neil stood to protest his presence. “Shut up, Chloe, I want her business. So, I’m involved, look it’s easier if I know the business and the owners.” David said in a soft whisper to Chloe inches from her ear before he’d left her. “Now, be an obedient girl. Go sit down, we’re on a timeline.” He didn’t want everyone blaming him for ruining the day. They’re at the wedding reception and David’s actions were no better. Chloe watched David as if he’d betrayed her. Her mouth hung open and her nose wrinkled. Befo

Chloe stayed out of Damien’s sight. She didn’t want to give April a way to prove to him she’d threatened or attacked her. She didn’t deserve to be here or, for that matter, exist. Why did she get everything given to her? Her family lost everything in one deal after another. No matter what they did. If they followed the law. Chloe didn’t know if they ever tried to follow the law. If they did, it wasn’t in her lifetime. She didn’t care about that. What she cared about was how they treated her. She’s a revenue stream, but she didn’t dare expect to share any benefit from the family, and her family wanted more from her. Now, they wanted her to get her claws on David’s money. Why David? There’re better men with superior portfolios available. She didn’t understand this. But she’d do this. Chloe hadn’t seen where they’d gone when the lights returned. The lights failed, and the chaos returned. She’d left David sitting in a chair complaining into a g

“I didn’t. David disliked this circus. He dragged me to Las Vegas. His family pressured me to sign his pre-nuptial agreement in a hotel room. He thought he’d protected his finances leaving anything I made during our marriage available to him. I uploaded photos of the agreement to my lawyer and my grandfather’s legal staff, who read them. They told me to sign it. David wrote the prenuptial that we kept everything divided. Before and during our marriage. If we split up, the only scenarios where we benefit from the other person are infidelity, children, or a fatal accident involving the partner. My grandfather threatened if I said anything to David before his death about my inheritance, he’d ensure the inheritance rules change. He saw David and his family for the greedy fools they are. I was an immature idiot. I wanted the vineyard and protected it.” April said this to Damien. Her grandfather wanted her to find an influential family, who could protect her, t

Hours later, they’d half of the elevators and emergency lights. Something that didn’t seem so bad within the suites or within the corridors. Elevators moved slower, and the lighting was dimmer. Landscape gardeners cleaned up the damage by the storm. “Well?” Damien asked Luke as soon as he stepped from the elevator. Luke hadn’t been able to ask how he was feeling. Or how April was. “How did this happen again?” “Someone set up a trigger, if this elevator activated and rose up toward your suite, it tripped a power surge which damaged something with the delivery system of electricity to the hotel. On a horrible note, the contract we have for the electrical maintenance can’t provide anyone for repairs until tomorrow.” “Will our repair contract cover this?” Damien said. He snapped at Luke, closed his eyes behind his right hand, and sighed. “Sorry, in time for the wedding, please.” “Right then.” Luke said in response

“They're aware of our presence; they'll reach us soon. Damien said to April. “Luke answered my call and is on top of everything.” “What do you mean on top of everything? What’s happening?” April wasn’t expecting this. She hadn’t expected a second outage so soon, but now Damien confirmed the situation was not an accident. “Someone tampered with the delivery of the electricity from the generators. I doubt their method; this isn't the only elevator affected. It’s the entire building again. Luke is on it again and we’re on the list.” Damien said to April. He frowned. “I question their method; buried cables precede the main structures. They will quickly identify the issue and restore the electricity promptly. He appeared unhappy. Now, this incident taught April understood to understand how powerlessness anyone could be. “I guess that’s the best we can expect. Your guests are more important right now. It would look bad if you took

  • Goodbye My Deadbeat Hello My Billionaire   CHAPTER 26-OFF AND ON

April didn’t run from Chloe, not with the lights on. Chloe's actions were visible to onlookers. April found herself stuck with no time to create a scenario or narrative to embarrass her. She couldn't quickly discredit April without raising questions about her own motives and presence. Chloe couldn't create false situations to blame on herself. April entered the lobby from the corridor and wrapped her robe closer around her. The lighting appeared so bright now after the dark. The soft sounds of people, music, and machines now appeared louder than before. She sighed because it’s over and she could find everyone else and ensure they’re okay. Then she’d retreat to her suite and hide. At least, that’s what April thought she’d do. That’s not what happened. April stepped toward the front desk and Damien’s voice came from behind her. “April, where were you? I told you to stay in the lobby or the lounge.” His words told everyone he’s annoyed, and Ap

  • Goodbye My Deadbeat Hello My Billionaire   CHAPTER 25-CHLOE’S ABORT THREAT

April watched David back away and leave. She sighed, letting her shoulders relax. Her arm hurt where he’d squeezed it. The ass thought she’d allow him to take her somewhere to hurt her. David signed the divorce settlement papers. He still believed he’d manipulate her life. A server appeared out of nowhere, startling and said to April when he refreshed her tea. “Enjoy Madam. If you need anything else, please signal me. I’ll bring it to you.” “Thank you.” Pastries next to a cup showed server presence. April studied the cup of tea as she thought. Damien had the staff watching her. Were they caring for her, guarding her, or protecting her? He wanted her in his life; she wasn’t sure if he understood all her facets. His feelings might change following that revelation. She ate and thought. David wanted his freedom, and then he acted like that. It won’t work; she would’ve to set a boundary. Damien would severely reprim

  • Goodbye My Deadbeat Hello My Billionaire   CHAPTER 24-WATCH OUT DAVID

"I want what you owe me." David said as he loomed over April. His face was in shadow, which meant she failed to see his hate filled glared, but she didn't miss his grip on her arm. The familiar pressure and pain were there. "David, I owe you nothing. Now, release my arm. Anything I have now has come from outside of our marriage and your prenuptial agreement and postnuptial agreement don't include it. You've signed the settlement, and I've already submitted it to my lawyer who's filed it. It's a matter of days we'll receive the official divorce certificates, and this'll be over." April said, and she hadn't cowered or cried. She'd seemed too calm, and her satisfied smile rubbed David the wrong way right now. "No, I don't believe you. It won't happen so soon. It's too early. I'm not ready. It can't be over." David leaned in closer as he spoke. His emotions rose as he spoke and revealed something odd. "What's the matter David? I

April felt the heavy drops of the rain; she stood up from the table. It came with a suddenness no one expected. April held her arm ahead of her face. Damien surprised her by taking her other hand, pulling her from the table. “Damien, a bride will change everything.” It’s out of your hands and you won’t miss your control.” Neil said. Their joking exchange had April questioning their playful banter. Was their banter veiled matchmaking. April didn’t know Damien; a hasty remarriage wasn’t her intention. “Well, that’s an excellent save darling.” Carolyn pinched Neil’s cheek, and she gave Neil a fond smile. “Yeah, wasn’t it? I’m hoping Damien’s taking notes. He’s going to need it.” Neil kissed Carolyn’s cheek and released Damien’s shoulder with a smile. “I heard you I’m still married. Okay, I’m getting wet. Can we move along?” April said from Damien’s other side as she raised a hand in protest. She wanted to set her
