Chapter 13

Author: Edelweiss W.S.
"Oh, you're just being modest, aren't you? I know you've got a hot body down there. How else could you have made it as a firefighter, am I right? Can I sneak a peek? See if you've got those well-defined muscles?"

The woman was growing stranger by the second. She was already handsy enough to grab my chest before I could react.

Her grin widened as excitement flooded her voice. "Oho, I felt it! Now that's rock hard!"

I stepped back warily. "Um, Mrs. McKay?"

"Oh, don't mind me, Mr. Grimwald. Where are my manners? Now, tell me… are you single?"

"I… I guess you could say that?" I answered, unsure. It was technically true, but telling Patricia that felt like a mistake.

Why was she still here, anyway? I'd already paid her. She should have left by now.

Patricia's grin stretched to its limit as her eyes narrowed.

"Perfect! I really like you, Mr. Grimwald. So here's what I'll do—I'm lowering your rent. You paid me three months in advance, plus a deposit, right? I'm going to count that as six months paid!"

I suddenly understood. She was hitting on me. A shiver crept down my spine. "No, wait! I'm not single! You misheard me. I've been married for five years! I even have a kid!"

She smiled like she'd just heard a terrible joke.

"You're a bad liar, Mr. Grimwald. That suitcase's packed for one. What, you left your wife and kid back in your hometown?" She folded her arms. "How old's your kid? What school do they go to? Who's their teacher?"

It turned into an interrogation about a kid who didn't exist. I couldn't answer a thing. I didn't even know Bobby well enough to lie and pretend he was mine.

My silence sealed the deal in her mind.

"See? What kind of father forgets his own kid? Oh, right. A father who doesn't have one! Ha! Don't worry about lying to me, Mr. Grimwald," she said with a breezy wave. "It's settled. You're welcome to stay here. Forget the deposit. What you've paid will count for six months!"

The look in her eyes made my skin crawl. As she turned toward the door, I raised my voice, hoping to stop her. "I'm married, ma'am! I mean it!"

"Yes, I'm sure you are." She gave a wink. "I still like you, sweetie. That's why the rent's cheaper. Please, enjoy your stay!"

She liked me? What kind of "like" was she talking about? And she clearly didn't believe I was married at all!

She closed the door behind her while I stood there, stunned. Just how forward was this woman? Who hit on someone they thought was married and didn't even care?

I should never have paid the rent upfront. I never should've signed that contract. Sleeping on the streets would've been better, but I had only enough money for two more days. My paycheck wouldn't arrive for a while.

I had no choice. I had to stay here.

As for Patricia, it would be safer to order an extra lock.

I placed the order and started unpacking. I only had personal grooming items and some clothes. Everything else—my toiletries, bedsheet, blanket—was still at Hera's house.

This would have to do.

Hera and Edmund arrived at the bar.

She was dressed like he had never seen before. Usually, she styled herself as a regal, aloof queen. Tonight, she wore a mini-skirt that revealed her long, lean legs wrapped in black silk. Her heels added height, and her hair was permed into wild, bold waves.

Her makeup stole the show. Striking and daring, she looked like a sex bomb.

Edmund couldn't take his eyes off her. His mouth hung open. "Hera, you... I had no idea this side of you existed! We never saw you like this when we were together!"

"How do I look?" she asked coyly.

"Gorgeous! You're the most beautiful woman in this place!"

"Do you like it?"

"I love it!" He swallowed nervously, then added, "Your husband won't like me saying that, will he?"

Hera brushed off his concern with a calm reply. "Let's not talk about him tonight. We're here to enjoy ourselves. Come on, let's get a drink."

"Okay! Oh, by the way, I think we should get a private room. You're so stunning tonight that I'm worried you might attract unwanted attention... Predators," he said quickly, his eyes gleaming.

"No. Let's stay here," she said firmly as she slipped her arm around his neck and pressed her body against his.

In the corner of the bar, a man watched and recorded everything from his seat.

The night was calm. I stood by the window, admiring the moon's soft, white glow.

I had been deep into housekeeping. While hanging my clothes, I opened the closet and found dust everywhere. This unit had not seen an occupant for ages.

I spent an hour cleaning before finally putting my clothes away. Just as I finished, a text popped up from an old college friend.

I hadn't spoken to Chase Johnson since graduation. I wondered what he wanted. Was he inviting me to his wedding?

Unfortunately, it was nothing so pleasant. He sent me a video clip.

It looked like it was filmed in a bar. A woman sat on a man's lap, her body pressed closely to his. Something about her felt familiar, but I couldn't place it.

Chase's message arrived with a "shock" emoji.

Chase: [Yo, man. Don't freak out, but is that your wife in the video?]

Hera?

My heart stopped for a moment.

I dismissed her and turned my attention to Renault. "Are you brain-damaged or what? I divorced this woman. There is nothing between us anymore. Your threat means nothing to me.""What problem do you even have with us?" Renault demanded loudly. "I have never done anything to harm you. I even stopped harassing Julia, just as I promised. Why is it so hard for you to leave my family alone?"Cruel malice gleamed in his eyes.I met his stare. "Think about it this way, Renault. The only reason I am standing here is because I discovered what you really did."Renault ground his teeth. "So that's it? There's no room for negotiation? Pfft. You're a bad boy, Sebastian. But I'm worse. If I have to go to hell, I'm taking you with me."He shoved Hera aside and lunged at me, his dagger flashing in a dazzling blur.My face drained of color. I had no time to retreat.Suddenly, Hera sprinted toward me, shrieking, "No! Stay away from him!"I had never seen her like this. She seized the blade with

  • Goodbye, Saintess.   Chapter 624

"He's dead?!" Something was not right. I could understand why the Kingsman executives would choose to kill themselves. According to Naomi, the crimes they had committed were so severe that parole from their life sentences would never be an option. The Hill Group, however, was nowhere near that level. At most, Winston would face a ten-year sentence. So why had he killed himself?"Something's rotten. Call Naomi and tell her to find out who's backing Winston. Get the other elites to work with her. Use my family's information brokers and resources.""Understood."Byleth took out her phone and relayed the message.Sazaar was now safe for me. The only personal enemy I had left was the Youngkins. Even so, I could not leave the city yet. I needed to know what had really happened to Winston. Had he been a pawn from the beginning? The Grimwald family's information network was extraordinary. Combined with Naomi's hacking skills, they uncovered the truth within ten minutes."You wouldn't

I patted her shoulder. "Hey now. Chin up. I still need your help at the mining site. Besides, I still have the Hill Group to deal with. Can I leave Sazaar to you?"Naomi looked startled. "Even the Hill Group?""Yep. My investigation shows that Winston did far more than we first believed. Because of him, people in Sazaar now think Sleeping Giant is nothing more than a predatory corporation. We need the Hill Group out of the picture, once and for all, if we want to keep doing business in this city. We have to expose the Hill Group and clear Sleeping Giant's name."Naomi nodded. "You helped me fulfill one of my greatest desires. Of course I'll repay you. You can leave it to me… if you trust me to handle it."I smiled. "Of course I do."I left half of the Grimwald Group's elites to support Naomi and headed straight for Winston's residence with Byleth. The Hill Group was already under my control. The remaining executives seemed unaware of the things Winston had done behind their backs

"Sleeping Giant isn't strong enough on its own to do much. But now, with the power of the Grimwald family, I can finally put my desires into action without worry."Anna nodded, even though she did not fully understand Sebastian. She sensed that the man smiling before her carried the aura of a conqueror.…I fetched the wine and invited Anna to join us for dinner."I'm so glad you agreed, Ian. I've already spoken with the executives of the Grimwald Group. As the heir to the family head, you can now command them however you wish. Your ambitions are now our ambitions," Julius said, his tone filled with admiration."I'll handle the trouble in Enbarr for now, until you achieve what you set out to do. After that, you can return in full glory. Let everyone know that my long-lost grandson is not an abandoned child. He is a true titan, now awakened.""You flatter me," I replied, giving his words little thought. At that moment, my focus rested entirely on the Hill Group's betrayal and the

"Baron has to be one of them, right? What about Byleth? A powerful warrior who just showed up in my life out of nowhere. She has to be one of your people too, doesn't she? And what about everyone else? The bigshots I saved. Did you plan all of that?"Julius looked momentarily startled. "No. Only Baron was my underling."Baron… The man who had helped me fly. Without him, I would never have reached the height I stood at today. So he knew."No wonder he kept trying to protect me even when his life was on the line. He was trying to earn your favor through me," I muttered. "That's a steep price to pay."I tried to process what I had just learned, forcing my thoughts to move faster. What was I supposed to do with this information? How was I supposed to face everyone I now knew?"If that's how you see it, Ian, I can't change your mind. I trust your ability to understand all of this," Julius said with a sigh. "Still, you need to internalize it quickly. More trouble is coming your way, Ian

Anna grinned with a hint of mystery. "Rather than asking me for an answer… you should ask the old man himself."The old man? What old man?I followed her into a private room at the restaurant. An elderly man sat behind the table, waiting. He wore finely tailored clothes, and a quiet, majestic presence filled the room.He looked familiar. Uncomfortably so. In fact, he looked a bit like me. "Who is this?" I asked.Anna did not answer. She turned to the old man and inclined her head with clear respect. "I've brought him here, Mr. Grimwald.""That you did. Atta girl," the old man said with a grin. He lifted a hand and waved me closer. "My precious Ian, come to your grandpa!""W-What?!" I blurted out. I pointed at myself. "Did you mean… m-me?"Who was this man? Had I heard him right? His last name was Grimwald?A strange sense of familiarity clung to me, one I could not shake. It felt as though I should be close to him, as though that closeness had been taken from me long ago.An
