Chapter 2

Author: Tomato Egg Stir-Fry
Holly was staring curiously at the dead body surrounded by the crowd. “Poor thing,” she said with sorrow.

Everyone around her praised how kind she was after hearing that.

I was the only person who knew how vicious and shameless she truly was underneath her obedient facade.

If it was not for her, I would not have ended up in a dead-end and had no other choice but to kill myself. However, it was too late now. My father had abandoned me for her.

Both of them had indirectly caused my death.

After the director called the cops, he said worriedly, “Our filming progress will be affected by this. But it’s truly a sad situation. Even though I can’t see the deceased girl’s face clearly, I can tell that she was young. What a shame.”

Alba took a few steps back. His eyes were cold and callous. He said indifferently, “The children nowadays are too fragile. They kill themselves over any little challenge. Serves them right!”

Did I deserve that? I laughed as tears rolled down my face. I could not even stand anymore. I curled up into a ball from pain.

Was I not dead? My illness could not hurt me anymore, so why was I still experiencing such pain?

Maybe it was because words could kill too.

Holly said with a smile, “Alba, don’t worry. I’m not like her. But… When I saw this poor girl, it made me think of Paige Powell. She hasn’t texted me back in a few days. I’m a little worried about her.”

Holly was still trying her best to make me look bad in my father’s eyes.

Alba sneered. He said indifferently, “She’s quite stubborn and doesn’t listen to me. She’s exactly like her mother. Forget about her.”

His smile turned even colder when he mentioned my mother.

“But… it’s too dangerous for her to always roam around alone as a girl. What if she runs into some trouble? That’d be bad.” Holly looked a little bit hesitant.

However, I could tell that even though her words were full of concern for me, her eyes were vicious. She really hoped I would get into trouble and die.

Alba sighed and patted her head. “Holly, you’re too kind. That’s why she always bullies you. I don’t care about a daughter like that. I’d be relieved if she got into trouble and died.”

His words pained me even more. Alba would not be upset about my death at all.

Even if he found out that I was the dead girl lying in front of him, he would be indifferent about it.

When Alba woke up in the hospital, Holly was by his side. She immediately passed Alba a glass of water when she saw that he had regained his consciousness. Alba resembled a rusted robot with his stiff movements. He seemed to recall something and suddenly asked, “Where’s Paige? I’m supposed to pick her up from school. I can’t stay here. I promised to pick her up.” When I was in first grade, I saw Alba sending Holly to school while I was being sent by the nanny. I cried and ran toward him. I hugged him and told him that I wanted him to fetch me from school at least once. He might have found me pitiful with my tear-stained face, or maybe he was afraid that I would make Holly late, but he promised to fetch me from school that day. It was the first time he told me that he was going to pick me up from school. I was extremely excited and looked forward to seeing my father. He did not show up. He had completely forgotten his promise to me. However, more than ten years later

“Her organs ruptured from the impact, and blood filled her lungs and trachea. She suffocated to death. Preliminary testing suggests that she committed suicide by jumping off a building. We’ve ruled out the possibility of homicide…”Alba could not comprehend what the police said after that. I may have committed suicide, but he was the one who caused my death. He did not care about me, and I missed the critical period to cure my illness. Instead of helping me, he had shamed me when I came to him for financial support. The true culprit of my death was him. My illness was real, my effort to study to gain his approval was real, and I did not lie to him when I asked him for money to treat my illness. However, because of his hatred toward my mother, he stubbornly ignored my efforts in building a good relationship with him. Alba suddenly laughed maniacally. He looked insane with his tired expression. No one dared to utter a single word. He kept looking at my pale face, as if he w

“Is she really that outstanding?” Alba lowered his gaze so no one could see the emotions in his eyes. “Of course. In my many years of teaching, I’ve come across students like her only a few times. She’s a great kid.”I teared up a little bit. It was not for Alba, but for the teacher whose name I did not even know. It turned out that there were many people who knew me and were proud of me. I was not the failure that I thought I was. Alba’s hands started to tremble. He finally lost it when he saw my teacher. She told him that I had applied for a week-long leave and had not shown up in school for a few days. “If she’s not at school or at home, where is she?” Alba exploded. He looked very anxious. At that moment, the phone in his pocket started ringing. He frantically retrieved his phone and looked at the phone screen. He was disappointed when he saw that it was an unknown number. “It’s not Paige?”Did he really wish that it was me?He answered the call, and a man with a

The car was reaching the speed limit, but Alba was still accelerating. The rearview mirror reflected his red eyes. After speeding down the road, he finally stopped before a hospital. He had reached the hospital where I was diagnosed. I saw him stumbling out of the car and rushing toward the front desk. He was holding my medical report when he asked about my condition. However, the doctor informed him that they could not simply disclose the patient’s information. Alba was having a breakdown. He tightly held onto the medical report in his hand as he stared at the doctor with red eyes. He roared, “This is my daughter’s medical report! I’m her father! Why can’t I know about her condition? Why?” Before he could finish, he was already sobbing. The doctor was shocked by his outburst. He immediately got their department head to attend to him. Alba followed the department head into his office. He anxiously repeated my condition. The department head put on his glasses and careful

After the discovery of my dead body, the filming had to be stopped. Alba rejected Holly’s suggestion to go for a meal. He went back to the home that he had not visited for a long time. He opened the door to complete darkness. The person that would stubbornly wait for him at the door was no longer there. “Paige, are you home?” He switched on the light and called out my name in the empty space. In Alba’s eyes, I went to him whenever he showed me any bit of kindness. I was like that since I craved his love. However, no one would answer his calls anymore. Alba was determined and kept calling out my name. But no one answered him. The house was quiet as a grave. I stood before him as I watched him call out my name in an empty room. I felt tears welling up. I thought that he did not care about me. I thought he wished that I was dead. Why was he then acting like he cared? He sat down on the couch and rubbed his temples. He took out his phone and opened the messaging app. I

I snapped out of my memories when I saw the policemen. They had arrived to retrieve my dead body. Alba was standing far away from me with his hand against his nose. He stared at the maggot-covered, bloody body in disgust. The policemen quickly took some photos of the scene and did a simple examination of my dead body before covering it with a white cloth. They were planning to bring my body back to do a thorough examination. But just when they were passing by Alba with the covered body, his disgust was suddenly replaced by confusion. He slowly walked forward and raised his hand uncontrollably. He wanted to reveal the body. Underneath the cloth was his biological daughter. Just when his hand touched the white cloth, one of the policemen interrupted him. “Stop! What are you doing?”Alba snapped back to his senses and put the white cloth down. He missed the last chance to see me.“I’m sorry about it. He must be frightened because he had never encountered something like this
