Chapter 2 The Last Straw

Author: Summer Hart
Derek stared at me, disappointment written all over his face. "I gave Anna my word. The decision has been made."

Before I could say anything, the door slammed shut with a deafening bang. My heart jolted with it.

Silence settled over the room again, as if the argument had never happened.

But the pain it left behind was overwhelming. It crashed over me all at once, making it hard to breathe.

In all the years we had been together, this was the first time Derek had ever lost his temper with me. For the sake of an outsider, he had torn me apart.

He made all the love, devotion, and waiting I had given him over the years feel like a cruel joke.

I should have seen him for who he was much sooner. Maybe then I would not have let him hurt me this badly.

My eyes burned with tears, but I refused to cry over either of them. I found the coordinator's number and told him plainly that I was not withdrawing. Derek had no right to replace me.

But the next day, I could not take the field.

Anna stood there holding my uniform, tears streaming down her face. "I'm so sorry, Lily. I really didn't mean to ruin your uniform."

My whole body trembled. The long tear in the fabric was so obvious that there was no way it had happened by accident.

She could not beat me on the dance team, so she resorted to this to force me out of her way. And the reason she was so fearless was simple.

Derek had her back. She knew that no matter what happened, he would take her side.

I had finally had enough. I raised my hand and swung at her, but my hand never reached her face.

Derek stepped in front of her. He grabbed my wrist in a crushing grip and flung me aside.

I stumbled backward, hit the wall, and sucked in a sharp breath as pain shot through my back.

Derek froze, about to come over to check on me, but Anna grabbed his arm and kept him where he was.

I took a step back on my own, putting more distance between us.

Derek's gaze fell on my cheer uniform, and he frowned. "I tore your uniform. It had nothing to do with Anna. Don't make things difficult for her."

I jerked my head up and glared at him, my chest aching. He did not want me to make things difficult for Anna. But for Anna's sake, he had no problem making things difficult for me.

My eyes turned red as I fought back tears.

"Derek, you're my boyfriend. Defending another woman just because she's from your hometown… Do you think that makes you loyal? Or are you just trying to help her?"

"I'm not," Derek said quickly.

"I just want you to give up your spot. Anna's been through so much. Lily, you weren't like this before. Didn't you say you wanted to look out for her? Then why can't you help her this time? Or were you just saying that to make yourself look good? Did you never really mean it?"

I stood there, completely stunned. So in Derek's eyes, everything I had done for Anna had only been an act. His words stabbed straight into my heart.

"I've done so much for Anna. Are you really going to erase all of it over one cheer squad spot? Derek, you're an athlete. You should understand better than anyone what fairness means."

Derek lowered his head. "As long as you step aside, Anna can take your place. Lily, you don't need this opportunity. Anna does."

A sharp pain twisted through my chest, over and over, as though something inside me were being wrung tighter with every passing second.

I felt like a fool. A fool forced to stand there and watch Derek beg me for an opportunity on Anna's behalf. If that was how he wanted it to be, then so be it.

"Let's break up. You've been so good to Anna. You might as well be her boyfriend."

This time, I immediately called the coach for help. By the time he arrived, Owen already had Derek pinned against the wall.Derek refused to give up, struggling as he shouted threats of making Owen pay.I stared at the scene before turning to speak with the coach. "Derek has seriously violated the team's rules. I don't think he's fit to be on the field."The coach raised an eyebrow. Judging by the look he was giving me, Owen's gossip held more than just a nugget of truth. The coach had clearly been considering the same thing I'd just suggested."Coach, Derek has already allowed his emotions to affect the last match, and now he's gotten into a fight with a teammate over his personal affairs. If this keeps up, I'm afraid he'll end up hurting the entire team's chances."Even though this soccer league was part of a tourism promotion program, any negative publicity would reflect badly on the city's reputation. The coach thought it over and reviewed the security footage. In the end, he

During that time, Derek tried every possible way to find me. He messaged mutual friends on WhatsApp, called people I knew, and asked everyone where I'd gone. Some of the more soft-hearted ones even told me how much Derek missed me. I just smiled and said nothing.I didn't see Derek again until more than 20 days later. I had returned to practice with the cheer squad while he was there for soccer training. The moment he saw me, he mistakenly assumed I'd come to my senses and had returned to him."Lily, I knew you couldn't bear to leave me. Do you have any idea how much I've missed you? I'm sorry, Lily. I know I hurt you. I promise it'll never happen again."I withdrew my hand from his grip. "Let go. You're interrupting my practice.""No. I'm not letting you go this time."He reached out to hug me, but Owen stepped in front of him. "Derek, can't you see Lily isn't interested?"Derek's temper flared instantly. "Owen, this is between Lily and me. Stay out of it.""And what if I don

More than half a month had passed, and Derek still hadn't been able to reach me. Another weekly league match came around, but Derek never spotted me among the cheer squad. He had always assumed I'd left in a fit of anger and that I couldn't bear to walk away from him. He never expected me to leave so decisively. To him, my departure had been so abrupt that he hadn't even had time to process it.Derek was so lost in thought that he didn't even notice the ball coming his way."Derek, what are you spacing out for? Didn't you see the ball?"It was a shot he could've stopped, but the other team scored because he'd been distracted.Halftime arrived, and the cheer squad took the field. Anna flung herself around just as badly as ever.I watched it all on my phone, my lips inadvertently turning themselves upside down in distaste. I had tuned in to watch Owen, but instead I got treated to this joke of a performance.I had no interest in watching Anna's grade-school routine, so I closed th

As soon as I stepped off the plane, I saw my mom. She stood there holding a bouquet of flowers, welcoming me home. I shoved my emotions aside and gave her a bear hug.Mom never wanted me to follow Derek. I was the one who had insisted on chasing after him. Three years later, I finally understood why she'd tried so hard to stop me."Mom, thank you for waiting for me.""Silly girl. What are you thanking me for? I'm your mother, not Derek."I laughed at that. She had a point. Derek would make things difficult for me because of someone from his hometown. My mother would never do such a thing."Sweetheart, there's someone else here to see you.""Who?""Me." A familiar yet unfamiliar man stepped forward. "Owen Parker."I looked at him in surprise. "Aren't you Derek's teammate?"I'd only met Derek's teammates once, and only briefly. So, I could barely recall any of them. Still, I remembered him. There had always been something about him that stood out to me.Owen smiled. "I am Derek

I had booked a ticket to leave the next morning. Just like that, my three-year relationship with Derek came to an end.But I did not sleep well that night. My dreams were filled with all the times Derek had chosen Anna over me and left me feeling hurt. Then, a deafening crash jolted me awake. I glanced at the clock. It was a little after four in the morning. At first, I thought someone had broken into the apartment. But the next second, my bedroom door was kicked open with a violent bang. Before I could even see who it was, Derek's furious voice rang out."What was that message you sent Anna supposed to mean? Do you have any idea she cried all night because of you? I finally managed to calm her down. You're not getting any sleep tonight until you explain yourself."I rubbed my temples, exhausted. I really did not want to keep getting tangled up with them. So I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door. But as I passed Derek, he grabbed the suitcase and hurled it away. It slamm
