Chapter 3 It's Over

Author: Summer Hart
Derek frowned. "What… What did you say?"

I took a deep breath, feeling an unexpected sense of relief. "We're breaking up."

He stared at me in disbelief. "Why? Just because I gave your spot to Anna? Lily, when did you become so petty? You were never like this."

Before I could respond, Anna stepped forward, looking as fragile as ever.

"Lily, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I never meant to come between you and Derek. If you're uncomfortable with us being around each other, I'll leave right away. Just… please don't be mad at Derek, okay?"

She cried so pitifully that anyone watching would have thought I had done something unforgivable to her.

Derek immediately moved in front of her, flustered. "Lily, this has nothing to do with Anna."

The woman he insisted had nothing to do with any of this flashed me a triumphant smile the moment he was not looking.

"Derek—"

"That's enough." He cut me off dismissively. "It's just one spot. There's no need to keep making such a big deal out of it. And don't threaten me with a breakup. You should head home. Anna and I still have to go out there. We can talk when I get back."

He took Anna by the hand and walked away, leaving me standing there alone. Anna glanced back at me several times, wearing that same smug smile.

By the time I got back to my apartment, it was already after nine, and the soccer match had ended.

Derek had scored a goal for the city team, and the reporters were interviewing him afterward.

Smiling into the camera, he said, "I'd like to thank my girlfriend. She's traveled with me to so many matches. Without her support, I never would have made it this far."

The host grinned. "So, who is this lucky girlfriend? Is she here today?"

"She is," Derek answered without hesitation. "Every time I play, she's there cheering me on with the cheer squad. Her name is—"

"Derek." Anna suddenly stepped into the frame, interrupting the interview.

Mistaking her for Derek's girlfriend, the host teased, "Your girlfriend's gorgeous."

Derek froze for a split second. Then, he smiled. He did not correct him. Right there on camera, he let everyone believe Anna was his girlfriend.

A dull ache spread through my chest. I had been with Derek for three years. I would be lying if I said it did not hurt. I had loved him with all my heart. I had once dreamed about our future together. But three years of our relationship still could not compete with a hometown friend named Anna.

That was enough. I did not want to be a cheerleader anymore. And I wanted nothing more to do with anything connected to Derek.

I pulled out my phone and texted my mom. "Mom, I'm coming home tomorrow."

Just then, a WhatsApp message from Derek popped up. "The team's having dinner tonight, so I'll be home late. Anna's coming with us. Don't wait up."

I clenched my fist. Then, I blocked Derek without another thought. While scrolling through my social media feed, I came across a short video Anna had posted.

In it, she and Derek sat shoulder to shoulder while everyone around them egged them on to share a cross-cupped drink. They exchanged shy smiles, both blushing. The video ended there, leaving plenty to the imagination.

Then, a second later, Anna sent me the full video. She and Derek really had shared the drink. And while everyone cheered around them, they even held hands.

I took a deep breath and opened our chat. "Congratulations. You can have the trash."

I set my phone down. And just like I had done with Derek, I removed Anna from my life too.

This time, I immediately called the coach for help. By the time he arrived, Owen already had Derek pinned against the wall.Derek refused to give up, struggling as he shouted threats of making Owen pay.I stared at the scene before turning to speak with the coach. "Derek has seriously violated the team's rules. I don't think he's fit to be on the field."The coach raised an eyebrow. Judging by the look he was giving me, Owen's gossip held more than just a nugget of truth. The coach had clearly been considering the same thing I'd just suggested."Coach, Derek has already allowed his emotions to affect the last match, and now he's gotten into a fight with a teammate over his personal affairs. If this keeps up, I'm afraid he'll end up hurting the entire team's chances."Even though this soccer league was part of a tourism promotion program, any negative publicity would reflect badly on the city's reputation. The coach thought it over and reviewed the security footage. In the end, he

During that time, Derek tried every possible way to find me. He messaged mutual friends on WhatsApp, called people I knew, and asked everyone where I'd gone. Some of the more soft-hearted ones even told me how much Derek missed me. I just smiled and said nothing.I didn't see Derek again until more than 20 days later. I had returned to practice with the cheer squad while he was there for soccer training. The moment he saw me, he mistakenly assumed I'd come to my senses and had returned to him."Lily, I knew you couldn't bear to leave me. Do you have any idea how much I've missed you? I'm sorry, Lily. I know I hurt you. I promise it'll never happen again."I withdrew my hand from his grip. "Let go. You're interrupting my practice.""No. I'm not letting you go this time."He reached out to hug me, but Owen stepped in front of him. "Derek, can't you see Lily isn't interested?"Derek's temper flared instantly. "Owen, this is between Lily and me. Stay out of it.""And what if I don

More than half a month had passed, and Derek still hadn't been able to reach me. Another weekly league match came around, but Derek never spotted me among the cheer squad. He had always assumed I'd left in a fit of anger and that I couldn't bear to walk away from him. He never expected me to leave so decisively. To him, my departure had been so abrupt that he hadn't even had time to process it.Derek was so lost in thought that he didn't even notice the ball coming his way."Derek, what are you spacing out for? Didn't you see the ball?"It was a shot he could've stopped, but the other team scored because he'd been distracted.Halftime arrived, and the cheer squad took the field. Anna flung herself around just as badly as ever.I watched it all on my phone, my lips inadvertently turning themselves upside down in distaste. I had tuned in to watch Owen, but instead I got treated to this joke of a performance.I had no interest in watching Anna's grade-school routine, so I closed th

As soon as I stepped off the plane, I saw my mom. She stood there holding a bouquet of flowers, welcoming me home. I shoved my emotions aside and gave her a bear hug.Mom never wanted me to follow Derek. I was the one who had insisted on chasing after him. Three years later, I finally understood why she'd tried so hard to stop me."Mom, thank you for waiting for me.""Silly girl. What are you thanking me for? I'm your mother, not Derek."I laughed at that. She had a point. Derek would make things difficult for me because of someone from his hometown. My mother would never do such a thing."Sweetheart, there's someone else here to see you.""Who?""Me." A familiar yet unfamiliar man stepped forward. "Owen Parker."I looked at him in surprise. "Aren't you Derek's teammate?"I'd only met Derek's teammates once, and only briefly. So, I could barely recall any of them. Still, I remembered him. There had always been something about him that stood out to me.Owen smiled. "I am Derek

  • Goodbye for Good   Chapter 4 The End of Us

I had booked a ticket to leave the next morning. Just like that, my three-year relationship with Derek came to an end.But I did not sleep well that night. My dreams were filled with all the times Derek had chosen Anna over me and left me feeling hurt. Then, a deafening crash jolted me awake. I glanced at the clock. It was a little after four in the morning. At first, I thought someone had broken into the apartment. But the next second, my bedroom door was kicked open with a violent bang. Before I could even see who it was, Derek's furious voice rang out."What was that message you sent Anna supposed to mean? Do you have any idea she cried all night because of you? I finally managed to calm her down. You're not getting any sleep tonight until you explain yourself."I rubbed my temples, exhausted. I really did not want to keep getting tangled up with them. So I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door. But as I passed Derek, he grabbed the suitcase and hurled it away. It slamm
