Chapter 2

Author: Underwater Autumn
I didn't argue or make a scene.

I simply looked at him quietly for two seconds.

In those two seconds, I remembered so many things about us.

I remembered meeting him for the first time when I was five. He'd been holding the Alpha's hand, looking at me with curiosity in his eyes.

I remembered his birthday, when I'd personally fastened that cufflink onto him.

I remembered all the times he'd told me about his plans after we went to the Warrior Academy.

He'd said he would take me to see the largest Church of Christ the Savior and watch white doves soar across the sky.

Whenever he'd said those things, his eyes had curved into a smile, and I'd thought he was truly planning our future together.

Two seconds passed.

I took a step back and moved aside.

Dominic froze for a second. He hadn't expected me to give way so easily.

Surprise flashed in his eyes, even disbelief, as though all the words he'd prepared to persuade me had suddenly been thrown off course.

He quickly recovered and turned happily toward Sloan. He took her hand and led her toward the dance floor.

When the music began, Dominic gentlemanly slipped an arm around her waist, and Sloan's skirt swayed around her.

She couldn't quite keep up with the rhythm, occasionally stepping on his polished shoes. Embarrassed, she looked up at him.

Dominic slowed his movements and patiently guided her.

Everyone around us was watching. Some whispered to each other. Others pulled out their phones to record.

A few people's gazes fell on me. Some were sympathetic. Others were confused.

I looked away and turned to leave.

Outside, a light rain had begun to fall.

I didn't bother with an umbrella. I simply let the rain strike my face.

The moonstone bracelet around my wrist suddenly snapped. I stopped and stared at it for several seconds.

It was the first gift Dominic had ever given me. The chain had broken several times before, but I'd repaired it every time.

This time, I simply let it fall into a puddle and didn't pick it up. There was no point anymore.

My phone screen lit up. It was a message from Dominic.

I checked the time. Five minutes had passed. It was exactly when he and Sloan had finished their dance, and he had a free moment.

"I told you, Sloan only has the two of us as friends. She doesn't dare ask anyone else to dance. Even when you're throwing a tantrum, you should know the right time and place to do it."

Every message was an accusation. Every one carried that same familiar tone he always used when defending Sloan, as though I'd actually done something wrong.

I read them again. Then I let out a soft laugh.

What Dominic didn't know was that two days earlier, I'd changed my mind. I'd decided to attend the Royal Healer Academy in Moscow. It was the first decision I'd ever made with such absolute certainty.

When I got home, I gathered up everything related to Dominic, including the ring he'd made and polished for me with his own hands, along with a thick stack of letters. The handwriting was young and clumsy, but every sentence was filled with concern.

"Why didn't you talk to me today? Are you upset?"

"You haven't been going out much lately. Do you want me to take you somewhere to clear your head?"

I put everything into a cardboard box.

Then I looked up at the wall covered in photographs. There were pictures of Dominic and me swimming together, with him bending down to look at me.

There were also pictures from when his football team won the championship, when he'd insisted on taking a picture with me first, looking triumphant and full of life.

I took them down one by one and stuffed them all into the box. It was almost full. I hadn't even sealed it yet, and everything inside carried some trace of him.

There was an old Ferris wheel ticket, yellowed with age. I remembered staring in wonder at the city glowing with lights when, suddenly, he'd grabbed my wrist.

His eyes had been bright as he asked, "Adelaide, we're at the very top of the Ferris wheel. What are we supposed to do now?"

I'd stared at him, completely baffled.

The next second, his lips pressed against mine.

"We're supposed to kiss."

From the age of five to eighteen, his imprint was everywhere in my life. He was my entire youth.

My phone suddenly rang. It was a notification from the academy forum.

I opened it and saw a post from Sloan. There was only one simple picture. Her pale hand was firmly clasped in a large hand with long, prominent knuckles.

I recognized that hand instantly. It was Dominic's.

The Laurent watch on his wrist was one I'd personally bought from a collector. There was only one in the world.

At the time, he'd run his fingers over it again and again, saying that every gift I gave him was exactly what he'd wanted.

Sloan had captioned the post: "Turns out even someone this incredible gets clingy when he's drunk."

Dominic froze. He looked at me in disbelief. "Those things... I said all of that without thinking. I just thought you were overthinking everything. I never meant for you to leave me..."I gave a cold laugh. "So you having dinner alone with her, leaving me at the park so you could go pick her up—that was all me overthinking things?"He opened his mouth, still trying to defend himself."And replacing the cufflink I gave you with the cheap one she gave you? Was that me overthinking things too?"Every question was like a silver blade driving straight into his heart. His body trembled, remorse thick in his voice. "Adelaide, there really isn't anything between Sloan and me. I don't like her. I did all of this... because I wanted you to stop telling me what to do. I thought you'd come looking for me like you always did."He stumbled over his words, and by the end, he reached out as if to hug me. "I never thought you'd actually leave me."I stepped away from him and looked at his redden

I pretended not to notice his feelings for me.Cullen wasn't in a hurry either. Every day, he showed up right on time along the path I always took. Then the long break arrived. I packed my bags and locked the front door of the little house for the last time. When I turned around, I saw Cullen standing beneath a tree not far away.As I pulled my suitcase past him, he caught me by the wrist. "Adelaide, can I come back to your pack with you? I'd like to look around."I tried to pull my hand free, but before I could, he let go first.I stopped and met his sincere, hopeful gaze. The refusal on my lips never came out. Before I could say anything, he continued, "I sent the invitation to your pack a long time ago. Don't worry. No one's going to question why I'm there."He'd gone this far for me, so I could only agree. On the plane, Cullen didn't stop talking. He told me about the fish he'd caught in a river near his home when he was little. He told me how he'd first traveled away from

My voice was filled with anger and contempt.Sloan tried desperately to compose herself. Forcing a smile, she asked, "Don't you have even the slightest feelings for me?"I looked at her coldly. "Me? How could I possibly have feelings for you?"Sloan had thought I was different from all the other male wolves out there. She endured the ache in her chest and unwillingly pressed on. "If you don't have feelings for me, then why did you go out of your way to help me? Why did you give me gifts, have dinner with me alone, and even dance the first dance with me?"By the end, her voice was almost breaking. "I really thought I was different to you."I only found the whole thing absurd. All I could think about now were Adelaide's words on that last phone call and the determined look on her face as she'd walked away from the party."Sloan, do you really think that highly of yourself? I helped you because I admired the fact that an Omega like you managed to escape from rogue wolves."The gif

The next morning, I woke before dawn. This was my first birthday since I awakened my wolf at eighteen.A layer of condensation covered the windows.Knowing I'd get to see Adelaide today lifted my mood.I took the Italian custom-made suit Adelaide had given me from my closet and carefully combed my hair until not a strand was out of place. I looked even more polished and expensive than usual.I imagined the look on Adelaide's face when she saw me dressed like this. She'd definitely be surprised.Downstairs, the living room had already been decorated by my parents and some friends from the pack.Moonflowers filled the walls. They were Adelaide's favorite flowers, and every year on my birthday, I'd have my parents arrange for someone to gather them. The long table was covered with aged wine, and the cake in the center was different from the ones we'd had in previous years. A delicate moon pattern had been pressed into the surface in low relief.I walked over to my father, Alexande

(Dominic Knight's POV)I sat on the couch, unconsciously tightening my grip around my glass.Adelaide's departing figure kept flashing through my mind. It felt as though something important had slipped away from me.Blake waved a hand in front of my face. "She's already gone. Aren't you going after her?"I abruptly pulled my gaze back and shrugged, pretending not to care. "No need. She has a temper. Once she cools off, she'll come looking for me."Blake looked at me. He opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only patted my shoulder.Soon, we drove to the fireworks festival. The place was packed, and fireworks bloomed across the night sky.In previous years, Adelaide and I had always come together."This is my first time seeing fireworks."Sloan's voice pulled me back to the present. I lowered my head and looked at her."Really?" I had no interest in the fireworks tonight. All I could think about was Adelaide.Whenever she'd left in the past

I said nothing and lowered my head to pour myself a drink. The red wine that usually tasted rich and smooth was almost impossible to swallow now, bitter beyond words. But the atmosphere around us was lively.Blake called everyone over to play a card game, and before long, bursts of laughter filled the room. Sloan and Dominic worked together seamlessly and won several rounds.I didn't look at them. I simply kept my head down and sipped my wine.Blake turned to Dominic. "Dominic, which academy are you going to?"Without even thinking, Dominic answered, "The Warrior Academy. Adelaide is going there too."Then he smiled at me, acting so naturally that you would've never guessed we were in the middle of a cold war.Everyone there knew about our relationship. They had all automatically assumed we'd end up together.Blake turned to the person beside him. "What about you, Sloan?"Sloan gently picked up her glass and took a sip. "The same as Dominic."The moment she said it, the room
