Chapter 1

Dominic Knight looked every bit the part of an Alpha heir in his perfectly tailored suit, his tall, lean frame exuding an unmistakable presence.

When I walked into the banquet with my arm linked through his, countless people looked at us with envy.

A few she-wolves winked at me and laughed.

"You two are absolutely perfect together. You're the Alpha heir's fated mate, after all."

But I only tugged the corners of my lips into a smile, bitterness spreading through my chest.

From the moment we entered the banquet, Dominic's attention wasn't on me. He kept his head lowered, staring at his phone, opening and closing it every few moments.

I handed him a glass of champagne. He took it but didn't drink.

His eyes remained fixed on the screen. He didn't even notice when the glass began to tilt in his hand.

I knew who he was waiting for.

Sloan Daniel, the Omega our pack had taken in two years ago. Her parents had both been killed by rogues, and she'd barely survived herself.

At first, Dominic had only admired her courage as an Omega.

But later, he started teaching her how to hunt, having dinner with her, and even giving her the birthday present he'd prepared for me in advance.

There were always she-wolves looking at me with pity.

I had cried and fought with him over it again and again, only to be met with his favoritism every single time.

Dominic had said, "Sloan is all alone. She's had it so hard. I'm just taking care of her. Stop making a fuss over nothing."

Fine. This time, I wouldn't make a fuss.

Five minutes after the dance began, Sloan arrived. She was wearing a red velvet gown with a trailing hem. The fabric looked a little cheap, but she'd clearly put a lot of effort into getting dressed up. She looked completely different from her usual plain appearance.

The moment Dominic saw her, a smile appeared on his face. It was exactly the same smile he'd worn when he'd confessed his feelings to me—admiration, heat, and the faintest hint of affection.

"If you hadn't come soon, I would've gone to get you myself." He visibly relaxed, as though he'd been afraid she wouldn't show up.

Sloan raised a hand and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Shyly, she pulled out a small box and said softly, "I dressed up for the dance. This is for you."

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a black onyx cufflink that had no shine to it and looked like something cheap. He took it out, pleasantly surprised.

"You even had our initials engraved on it!"

Sloan nodded, her cheeks turning faintly pink.

Dominic's delight was impossible to miss. He reached up and removed the wolf-engraved cufflink from his sleeve, the one I'd given him. I'd won it at an auction, a one-of-a-kind piece, and then personally engraved the wolf on it. I'd stayed up for several nights to finish it.

On his birthday, surrounded by expensive gifts, mine was the one he'd loved the most.

I'd asked him, "It's just a cufflink. Do you really like it that much?"

He'd said, "Of course I do. You gave it to me. I'm going to wear it for the rest of my life."

Now he'd taken it off without a second thought.

He put on the ordinary cufflink instead, smiling so broadly the corners of his eyes lifted.

I stared at the wolf cufflink he'd taken off, my heart feeling as though someone had given it a gentle squeeze.

It didn't hurt. It just felt heavy.

I looked away. I didn't want to see it anymore.

"Adelaide Reynolds." Dominic sounded so pleased, as though he were mentioning something completely ordinary. "I want to dance with Sloan."

Before I could say anything, Sloan spoke, "Dominic, wouldn't that be inappropriate?"

She lifted her eyes slightly. Her voice carried a hint of hesitation, but her eyes were filled with anticipation. "After all, Adelaide is your mate. You should dance the first dance with her."

As she spoke, her gaze briefly swept over me before settling on Dominic.

There was a trace of contempt in her eyes. She thought she'd hidden it well.

She hadn't. It was perfectly clear.

Dominic didn't look at Sloan. He looked at me instead, waiting for me to react the way I had last time.

The last time I'd seen him let Sloan ride in the passenger seat of his car and drive her home.

The last time I'd frowned and demanded to know what was going on, losing my temper with him.

"Sloan doesn't have many friends, and she's too timid to ask anyone else to dance," he explained casually, trying to get me to give in first.

"You're kindhearted. You wouldn't want to see her standing alone in the corner while everyone else has a dance partner and she doesn't, would you?"

Dominic froze. He looked at me in disbelief. "Those things... I said all of that without thinking. I just thought you were overthinking everything. I never meant for you to leave me..."I gave a cold laugh. "So you having dinner alone with her, leaving me at the park so you could go pick her up—that was all me overthinking things?"He opened his mouth, still trying to defend himself."And replacing the cufflink I gave you with the cheap one she gave you? Was that me overthinking things too?"Every question was like a silver blade driving straight into his heart. His body trembled, remorse thick in his voice. "Adelaide, there really isn't anything between Sloan and me. I don't like her. I did all of this... because I wanted you to stop telling me what to do. I thought you'd come looking for me like you always did."He stumbled over his words, and by the end, he reached out as if to hug me. "I never thought you'd actually leave me."I stepped away from him and looked at his redden

I pretended not to notice his feelings for me.Cullen wasn't in a hurry either. Every day, he showed up right on time along the path I always took. Then the long break arrived. I packed my bags and locked the front door of the little house for the last time. When I turned around, I saw Cullen standing beneath a tree not far away.As I pulled my suitcase past him, he caught me by the wrist. "Adelaide, can I come back to your pack with you? I'd like to look around."I tried to pull my hand free, but before I could, he let go first.I stopped and met his sincere, hopeful gaze. The refusal on my lips never came out. Before I could say anything, he continued, "I sent the invitation to your pack a long time ago. Don't worry. No one's going to question why I'm there."He'd gone this far for me, so I could only agree. On the plane, Cullen didn't stop talking. He told me about the fish he'd caught in a river near his home when he was little. He told me how he'd first traveled away from

My voice was filled with anger and contempt.Sloan tried desperately to compose herself. Forcing a smile, she asked, "Don't you have even the slightest feelings for me?"I looked at her coldly. "Me? How could I possibly have feelings for you?"Sloan had thought I was different from all the other male wolves out there. She endured the ache in her chest and unwillingly pressed on. "If you don't have feelings for me, then why did you go out of your way to help me? Why did you give me gifts, have dinner with me alone, and even dance the first dance with me?"By the end, her voice was almost breaking. "I really thought I was different to you."I only found the whole thing absurd. All I could think about now were Adelaide's words on that last phone call and the determined look on her face as she'd walked away from the party."Sloan, do you really think that highly of yourself? I helped you because I admired the fact that an Omega like you managed to escape from rogue wolves."The gif

The next morning, I woke before dawn. This was my first birthday since I awakened my wolf at eighteen.A layer of condensation covered the windows.Knowing I'd get to see Adelaide today lifted my mood.I took the Italian custom-made suit Adelaide had given me from my closet and carefully combed my hair until not a strand was out of place. I looked even more polished and expensive than usual.I imagined the look on Adelaide's face when she saw me dressed like this. She'd definitely be surprised.Downstairs, the living room had already been decorated by my parents and some friends from the pack.Moonflowers filled the walls. They were Adelaide's favorite flowers, and every year on my birthday, I'd have my parents arrange for someone to gather them. The long table was covered with aged wine, and the cake in the center was different from the ones we'd had in previous years. A delicate moon pattern had been pressed into the surface in low relief.I walked over to my father, Alexande

(Dominic Knight's POV)I sat on the couch, unconsciously tightening my grip around my glass.Adelaide's departing figure kept flashing through my mind. It felt as though something important had slipped away from me.Blake waved a hand in front of my face. "She's already gone. Aren't you going after her?"I abruptly pulled my gaze back and shrugged, pretending not to care. "No need. She has a temper. Once she cools off, she'll come looking for me."Blake looked at me. He opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only patted my shoulder.Soon, we drove to the fireworks festival. The place was packed, and fireworks bloomed across the night sky.In previous years, Adelaide and I had always come together."This is my first time seeing fireworks."Sloan's voice pulled me back to the present. I lowered my head and looked at her."Really?" I had no interest in the fireworks tonight. All I could think about was Adelaide.Whenever she'd left in the past

I said nothing and lowered my head to pour myself a drink. The red wine that usually tasted rich and smooth was almost impossible to swallow now, bitter beyond words. But the atmosphere around us was lively.Blake called everyone over to play a card game, and before long, bursts of laughter filled the room. Sloan and Dominic worked together seamlessly and won several rounds.I didn't look at them. I simply kept my head down and sipped my wine.Blake turned to Dominic. "Dominic, which academy are you going to?"Without even thinking, Dominic answered, "The Warrior Academy. Adelaide is going there too."Then he smiled at me, acting so naturally that you would've never guessed we were in the middle of a cold war.Everyone there knew about our relationship. They had all automatically assumed we'd end up together.Blake turned to the person beside him. "What about you, Sloan?"Sloan gently picked up her glass and took a sip. "The same as Dominic."The moment she said it, the room
