Chapter 3

Author: Serene Joy
Vivian sat beside Nathan, her face expressionless.

The whispers around the room pricked at her like needles.

She pretended not to hear them.

Serena’s eyes immediately reddened.

She stood up, her voice trembling.

“Mr. Hayes, I can’t accept this. I haven’t done enough to deserve it.”

Nathan placed a hand on her shoulder, his tone leaving no room for argument.

“You deserve it. Everyone here has seen how much you’ve given to this company over the years.”

Then he turned to Vivian.

“Ms. Grant agreed to it too.”

The conference room fell completely silent.

Every eye turned toward Vivian, waiting for her to speak.

Vivian stared at Nathan’s hand resting reassuringly on Serena’s shoulder.

She lowered her gaze, her nails digging into her palm.

“Yes. I agreed.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but every person in the room heard her clearly.

Some looked stunned.

Others immediately lowered their heads and started typing furiously on their phones.

A few exchanged knowing glances.

Nathan nodded in satisfaction and continued.

“Now that Serena is a shareholder, she’ll no longer be working solely as my secretary. She’ll be involved in more of the company’s core projects.

“I expect everyone to cooperate with her and give her the support she needs.”

Everyone nodded in agreement.

The way they looked at Serena had already changed, carrying noticeably more respect.

Watching the scene unfold, Vivian suddenly remembered the early days of the company.

She had once accompanied Nathan to meet an especially difficult client.

The man had taken one look at how young she was and learned that she came from a ballet background.

His disdain had been obvious.

“Mr. Hayes, you brought a ballerina to a business meeting? Is she here to put on a show for me?”

Vivian’s face had burned with humiliation.

Nathan had immediately set down his glass.

His voice had been ice-cold.

“She’s the business partner I trust most.

“If you have a problem with that, then we don’t need this deal.”

Once they left the building, Vivian’s eyes had finally turned red.

Nathan had cupped her face in his hands.

“Vivian, no one gets to look down on you.

“As long as I’m here, all you need to do is hold your head high and keep moving forward.”

Back then, she had believed this man would protect her for the rest of her life.

But now, the woman he was protecting was someone else.

After the meeting ended, everyone gradually filed out.

Whispers spread through the room like a rising tide.

“Has Ms. Grant basically been pushed aside?”

“His actual girlfriend is sitting right there, and Mr. Hayes is still openly protecting Serena.”

“You don’t understand. It’s equity compensation. Public companies do this all the time.”

“Compensation is one thing. But why did it have to be his secretary?”

Vivian didn’t move.

She remained in her seat until the last set of footsteps disappeared down the hallway.

Only then did she slowly stand.

On her way out, she passed Serena’s workspace.

It was a small area directly outside Nathan’s office, separated by a semi-sheer privacy screen.

The screen was drawn.

Quiet voices came from the other side.

Serena sounded uneasy, with a hint of hurt in her voice.

“Mr. Hayes, do you think Vivian is upset?

“Those were her shares. I feel terrible accepting them.

“Maybe you should give them back to her. I’m afraid she’ll blame me.”

Nathan’s voice softened as he reassured her.

“With me protecting you, who would dare blame you?

“Don’t worry. I’ve already handled things with Vivian. You don’t need to think about it.”

Vivian stood outside the screen, her fingers tightening around the edge of the folder in her hands.

She heard Serena murmur a soft, nasal “Okay.”

It sounded almost like she was both touched and seeking comfort.

Then came the scrape of a chair.

Nathan seemed to move closer to her.

Vivian had never paid much attention to that privacy screen before.

Now she suddenly understood.

Nathan hadn’t had it installed simply because it was “more convenient for discussing work.”

He had done it so Serena could always be close to him.

Vivian forced herself to look away.

As she walked toward the exit, she called her attorney.

“Mr. Walker, please put all the shares under my name up for sale.

“Sell every last one. I want it handled as quickly as possible.”

There was a brief pause on the other end.

“Ms. Grant, are you planning to leave the company?”

“Yes.”

Her voice was perfectly calm.

“Can everything be done within a month?”

“It can. I’ll have it expedited.”

After hanging up, Vivian sent a message to a few of her closest friends.

'Drinks tonight. My treat.'

Three months later, Vivian moved into the new apartment Ryan had designed for her.He had drawn every detail himself, weaving in little preferences she had mentioned without even realizing it.The kitchen counters were set at a height she could comfortably reach because she had once complained that the cabinets in her old place were so high she couldn’t reach them even on tiptoe. The bedroom windows faced east because she had said she liked waking up to sunlight. And an entire wall by the entryway was covered with a mirror because she always checked her posture before leaving the house. When Ryan handed her the keys, Vivian walked up to him, rose onto her toes, and kissed his cheek.“That’s the deposit.“If the apartment passes inspection, you’ll get the rest.”Ryan froze for a second. Then he laughed, bent down, and swept her off her feet.Vivian yelped and smacked his shoulder.“Put me down!”“Failed inspection,” he said.“I don’t want the final payment anymore. I want t

Vivian looked at him, and her eyes suddenly turned red.She bit her lip and forced back the tears before taking his hand and pulling herself to her feet.“Let’s go.”They had just reached the lobby when hurried footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway.Nathan came running toward them, breathless. His hair was a mess, his shirt wrinkled, as though he had rushed straight out of his apartment. He had noticed Vivian hadn’t come out yet either and had forced his way in through the main entrance. But the building was completely unfamiliar to him.He had spent nearly twenty minutes wandering through the wrong corridors.Nathan stopped several feet away when he saw Vivian standing there unharmed.Vivian glanced at him but said nothing. She simply followed Ryan out the door.Nathan watched the two of them disappear outside. For the first time, he realized that in this city, he could no longer be the first person to find her when something went wrong. When they reached Vi

Nathan had lost a lot of weight. His suit hung loosely from his frame, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and the platinum ring was clenched tightly in his hand.“Vivian.”His voice was so hoarse she could barely hear him.Vivian stopped but didn’t move any closer.“What do you want?”Nathan looked down at the ring in his hand. Then he raised his head, his eyes red.“I was wrong.“Can you give me one more chance?”Vivian looked at him in silence. She remembered that ring. She had chosen it herself. She had personally had their initials engraved inside.Back then, she had truly believed she would marry Nathan. She had believed he would be the man who stayed beside her for the rest of her life.“Nathan,” she finally said, her voice calm and detached. “Keep your apology for yourself.“Go back to Riverton.“Ashburn isn’t the place for you.”With that, she walked past him.Nathan remained frozen where he stood. The ring dug painfully into his palm. When Vivian returned to

The first time Vivian went to physical therapy, the receptionist told her,“Someone has already paid for your treatment.”Vivian asked who.The receptionist pointed to the unnamed account in the system.“It was anonymous.”Vivian fell silent for a moment. She didn’t ask any more questions. That evening, she returned to her apartment, put the groceries she had bought into the refrigerator, and made herself a bowl of noodles. She sat by the window and ate slowly.Halfway through dinner, she happened to glance up.Her gaze landed on the top-floor window of the building across the street. The light was on.The curtains were half open, and she could just make out a figure standing by the window. The distance was too great to see his face. But Vivian knew exactly who it was.Ever since Nathan followed her to Ashburn, he had been living across the street, watching her from a distance every day.Vivian stared for two seconds. Then she set down her bowl and drew the curtains.

The next day, Ryan openly questioned the new investor’s motives during the project meeting.Citing the need to protect the design team’s independence, he proposed an additional clause:The investor would have no authority to interfere with the design team’s decisions, including the construction schedule, choice of materials, or any matters involving the ballet company. The French partners sided with Ryan.Nathan didn’t attend the meeting. When his assistant forwarded him the minutes afterward, he read them and smiled faintly.Ryan was smarter than he had expected. And much more assertive.Nathan didn’t push back.He simply told his assistant to inform the French partners that he respected the design team’s independence and had no intention of interfering with any of their decisions. He had never wanted control over the project. All he wanted was a legitimate reason to stay close to Vivian. Not long after, Ryan asked Nathan to meet him privately.Ryan chose a restaurant nea

Vivian took a step closer to him.Close enough for Nathan to see the red veins in her eyes.“My parents aren’t coming back.“Do you really think I care what you did to Serena? Or how many messages you sent me?“What I care about is that the night my mother died, she was waiting for money for her surgery.“What I care about is that while my father was being taken in for questioning, you were at a launch event with Serena!”Her voice wasn’t loud. But every word cut into Nathan like a knife.“So tell me, Nathan.“How are you ever going to make up for that?”Nathan opened his mouth. Not a single word came out.Vivian looked at him for another two seconds before turning away. She walked around him without looking back.Ryan glanced at Nathan but said nothing. Then he followed Vivian.Nathan remained rooted to the spot, watching her walk farther and farther away. Her light gray coat gradually blurred into the evening until she disappeared around the corner.Nathan lowered h
