Chapter 5

Author: Serene Joy
Vivian grabbed the bottle of red wine from the table, raised it over her head, and poured it straight over herself.

Red wine streamed down her body, instantly staining her white blouse a shocking crimson.

Everyone at the booth froze.

Vivian dropped the empty bottle onto the table and looked at Nathan.

The corner of her mouth curved slightly, her voice hoarse.

“Is that enough?”

Serena immediately put on a worried expression.

“Vivian, you don’t have to do this to yourself. Mr. Hayes will feel terrible.”

Nathan’s gaze remained on Serena, who was shivering from the cold.

He didn’t even look at Vivian.

“I don’t want this happening again.”

The bar door opened and closed.

A gust of cold night air swept inside, dispersing the heavy smell of alcohol.

Vivian remained where she was, wine still dripping from the ends of her hair.

Lena took off her jacket and draped it around Vivian’s shoulders.

“Vivian…”

Vivian shook her head.

“I’m fine. Let’s go.”

She picked up her bag and walked away, leaving wet footprints behind her.

Her back remained perfectly straight.

Not a single tear fell.

Over the next few days, Vivian and Nathan barely spoke.

He started coming home later and later.

Sometimes, he didn’t come home at all.

At the office, he and Serena were spending more and more time together.

Serena sat beside him during meetings.

They went downstairs for lunch alone.

Whenever they worked late, Nathan drove her home.

Rumors quickly spread through the company.

“Are Mr. Hayes and Serena together now? Ms. Grant doesn’t care?”

“Ms. Grant already gave Serena some of her shares. Isn’t that obvious enough?”

“I actually feel bad for Ms. Grant. She built this company with Mr. Hayes, and now someone else gets to enjoy everything she worked for.”

Whenever Vivian overheard them, she simply smiled and went back to organizing the documents in her hands.

She was almost finished handing over her work.

Her visa had been approved too.

None of it mattered anymore.

There was only one important thing left to do before she left.

She needed to make sure her parents were taken care of so the Grant family wouldn’t suffer the same downfall as they had in her previous life.

This time, Vivian had prepared in advance.

She had moved part of the family’s assets into an overseas trust.

She had also insulated her father’s business dealings from potential liabilities.

She had even stocked extra supplies of her mother’s emergency medication.

Vivian thought she had covered everything.

She thought she could finally leave without worrying.

Then one day, she received an urgent call from her father’s assistant.

“Ms. Grant, something terrible happened! Your mother was rushed to the hospital, your father has been taken in for questioning, and both the company and the family home have been seized!”

Vivian’s mind went blank.

How could this have happened?

She had taken precautions against everything.

There was no time to think.

She grabbed her bag and rushed out.

When she reached the hospital, her father’s assistant was waiting outside the emergency room.

At that exact moment, a doctor came out and pulled off his mask.

His gaze swept over the people in the hallway.

“The patient is in critical condition. The surgical deposit needs to be paid immediately. We can’t delay the operation any longer.”

Vivian immediately opened her banking app.

But none of the money in her accounts could be moved.

The funds in the overseas trust were still locked under a ninety-day restriction period.

Vivian spun around and grabbed her father’s assistant by the arm.

“What happened?

“How did my father’s company end up like this?”

He lowered his head, his voice strained.

“It was Serena Lane.

“She said she was helping Mr. Hayes organize information on the company’s business partners, so she gained access to your father’s key client list and financial records.

“She leaked the information to a competitor.

“But Mr. Hayes stepped in for her. He said it had only been a mistake and refused to pursue the matter.”

Vivian slowly released his arm.

So that was what had happened.

All her precautions.

All her careful planning.

None of it had mattered against Nathan’s determination to protect Serena.

In her previous life, Nathan had solved every problem for her.

He had been the one ray of light in the darkest period of her life.

But now, Serena had caused the Grant family to collapse overnight.

And instead of holding her accountable,

Nathan had stepped in to protect her.

Vivian turned toward the closed doors of the emergency room.

Behind them, the faint beeping of her mother’s life-support equipment sounded like a thread that could snap at any moment.

She forced herself to stay calm and called Nathan.

The phone rang several times.

But when someone finally answered,

it was Serena.

Her voice was soft and sleepy, as though she had just woken up.

“Hello?”

Three months later, Vivian moved into the new apartment Ryan had designed for her.He had drawn every detail himself, weaving in little preferences she had mentioned without even realizing it.The kitchen counters were set at a height she could comfortably reach because she had once complained that the cabinets in her old place were so high she couldn’t reach them even on tiptoe. The bedroom windows faced east because she had said she liked waking up to sunlight. And an entire wall by the entryway was covered with a mirror because she always checked her posture before leaving the house. When Ryan handed her the keys, Vivian walked up to him, rose onto her toes, and kissed his cheek.“That’s the deposit.“If the apartment passes inspection, you’ll get the rest.”Ryan froze for a second. Then he laughed, bent down, and swept her off her feet.Vivian yelped and smacked his shoulder.“Put me down!”“Failed inspection,” he said.“I don’t want the final payment anymore. I want t

Vivian looked at him, and her eyes suddenly turned red.She bit her lip and forced back the tears before taking his hand and pulling herself to her feet.“Let’s go.”They had just reached the lobby when hurried footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway.Nathan came running toward them, breathless. His hair was a mess, his shirt wrinkled, as though he had rushed straight out of his apartment. He had noticed Vivian hadn’t come out yet either and had forced his way in through the main entrance. But the building was completely unfamiliar to him.He had spent nearly twenty minutes wandering through the wrong corridors.Nathan stopped several feet away when he saw Vivian standing there unharmed.Vivian glanced at him but said nothing. She simply followed Ryan out the door.Nathan watched the two of them disappear outside. For the first time, he realized that in this city, he could no longer be the first person to find her when something went wrong. When they reached Vi

Nathan had lost a lot of weight. His suit hung loosely from his frame, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and the platinum ring was clenched tightly in his hand.“Vivian.”His voice was so hoarse she could barely hear him.Vivian stopped but didn’t move any closer.“What do you want?”Nathan looked down at the ring in his hand. Then he raised his head, his eyes red.“I was wrong.“Can you give me one more chance?”Vivian looked at him in silence. She remembered that ring. She had chosen it herself. She had personally had their initials engraved inside.Back then, she had truly believed she would marry Nathan. She had believed he would be the man who stayed beside her for the rest of her life.“Nathan,” she finally said, her voice calm and detached. “Keep your apology for yourself.“Go back to Riverton.“Ashburn isn’t the place for you.”With that, she walked past him.Nathan remained frozen where he stood. The ring dug painfully into his palm. When Vivian returned to

The first time Vivian went to physical therapy, the receptionist told her,“Someone has already paid for your treatment.”Vivian asked who.The receptionist pointed to the unnamed account in the system.“It was anonymous.”Vivian fell silent for a moment. She didn’t ask any more questions. That evening, she returned to her apartment, put the groceries she had bought into the refrigerator, and made herself a bowl of noodles. She sat by the window and ate slowly.Halfway through dinner, she happened to glance up.Her gaze landed on the top-floor window of the building across the street. The light was on.The curtains were half open, and she could just make out a figure standing by the window. The distance was too great to see his face. But Vivian knew exactly who it was.Ever since Nathan followed her to Ashburn, he had been living across the street, watching her from a distance every day.Vivian stared for two seconds. Then she set down her bowl and drew the curtains.

The next day, Ryan openly questioned the new investor’s motives during the project meeting.Citing the need to protect the design team’s independence, he proposed an additional clause:The investor would have no authority to interfere with the design team’s decisions, including the construction schedule, choice of materials, or any matters involving the ballet company. The French partners sided with Ryan.Nathan didn’t attend the meeting. When his assistant forwarded him the minutes afterward, he read them and smiled faintly.Ryan was smarter than he had expected. And much more assertive.Nathan didn’t push back.He simply told his assistant to inform the French partners that he respected the design team’s independence and had no intention of interfering with any of their decisions. He had never wanted control over the project. All he wanted was a legitimate reason to stay close to Vivian. Not long after, Ryan asked Nathan to meet him privately.Ryan chose a restaurant nea

Vivian took a step closer to him.Close enough for Nathan to see the red veins in her eyes.“My parents aren’t coming back.“Do you really think I care what you did to Serena? Or how many messages you sent me?“What I care about is that the night my mother died, she was waiting for money for her surgery.“What I care about is that while my father was being taken in for questioning, you were at a launch event with Serena!”Her voice wasn’t loud. But every word cut into Nathan like a knife.“So tell me, Nathan.“How are you ever going to make up for that?”Nathan opened his mouth. Not a single word came out.Vivian looked at him for another two seconds before turning away. She walked around him without looking back.Ryan glanced at Nathan but said nothing. Then he followed Vivian.Nathan remained rooted to the spot, watching her walk farther and farther away. Her light gray coat gradually blurred into the evening until she disappeared around the corner.Nathan lowered h
