Chapter 6

Author: Serene Joy
“Where’s Nathan? I need to speak to him. It’s urgent.”

Vivian’s voice was tight.

“Mr. Hayes?”

Serena drew out the words, sounding almost amused.

“He drank too much at a business dinner. I just helped him into bed. He’s exhausted and sleeping pretty deeply.”

Something slammed into Vivian’s chest.

She gritted her teeth.

“Where is he? I need to see him right now.”

“Ms. Grant.”

Serena cut her off, her tone calm and almost helpless.

“Mr. Hayes has to accompany me to a partner’s launch event tomorrow. He really can’t get away.”

“But he specifically said you should handle your own problems. He doesn’t have the energy to deal with them.”

The call ended.

Vivian bit down hard on her lip and dialed again.

His phone was off.

She tried once more.

Still off.

Her hand began to tremble around the phone until the name on the screen blurred before her eyes.

But she didn’t have time to fall apart.

She started calling everyone she knew, asking to borrow money.

She swallowed her pride and begged, scraping together the money bit by bit.

At last, she had enough for the surgery.

Vivian turned and was about to rush to the billing desk when the emergency room doors suddenly opened.

The doctor stepped out and removed his mask.

He looked at her and shook his head.

“I’m sorry. We did everything we could.”

Vivian’s knees gave out beneath her.

A nurse caught her, but Vivian stumbled past her and rushed into the emergency room.

Her mother lay motionless on the bed, a white sheet covering her face.

Vivian grabbed her mother’s already cold hand.

Tears fell onto the sheet one after another.

Then she broke down sobbing.

At that exact moment, her father’s assistant rushed through the door.

His face was deathly pale, his lips trembling.

“Ms. Grant…

“Your father was threatened while he was cooperating with the investigation. He suffered a massive heart attack.

“He died before anyone could save him.”

Vivian’s sobs stopped.

She couldn’t hold herself up anymore.

Her body collapsed onto the cold tile floor.

Her father’s assistant hurried toward her.

“Ms. Grant!”

Vivian couldn’t hear him.

Her ears were ringing.

Only one thought kept repeating in her mind.

She had been reborn.

She had known what was coming.

She had prepared for it.

So why had she still failed to save her parents?

All the precautions she had believed were foolproof had turned out to be paper-thin against Serena’s schemes and Nathan’s determination to protect her.

“It’s my fault.”

Her voice began to shake.

“It’s all my fault. Why didn’t I prepare better?”

The words came faster and faster.

Her breathing turned rapid and uneven.

Her father’s assistant crouched down and tried to help her up, but Vivian shoved him away.

She braced both hands against the floor and pressed her forehead to the freezing tile, her shoulders shaking violently.

“Mom. Dad. I’m sorry.

“I’m so sorry.”

She sobbed until her entire body trembled.

Until she could barely breathe.

Her father’s assistant stood beside her with red-rimmed eyes, unable to say a word.

After what felt like forever, her cries gradually faded into broken sobs.

Then even those stopped.

Vivian swayed.

A second later, she collapsed onto her side, unconscious.

Her father’s assistant panicked and immediately called for a nurse.

Several people rushed over and carried her to a chair in the hallway, trying desperately to rouse her.

After a long while, Vivian’s eyelashes finally fluttered.

She slowly opened her eyes.

They were empty.

Completely hollow.

She didn’t speak.

She simply sat up and leaned back against the chair, staring at the ceiling for so long that her father’s assistant began to wonder if she would ever speak again.

Then, finally, she did.

Her voice was so hoarse it was barely audible.

“Contact a funeral home for me.

“Have my parents cremated. I’m taking their ashes with me.

“And book me a flight to Ashburn tonight. The earliest one you can find.”

Just then, a message from her attorney came through.

'Ms. Grant, all your shares have been sold. The funds have been deposited into your account.'

Before dawn, Vivian collected her parents’ urns.

She held them tightly against her chest, their cold surfaces chilling her to the bone.

Then she went straight to the airport.

The terminal was brightly lit.

When the boarding announcement sounded, Vivian walked toward the gate.

Before the plane took off, her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

It was a message from Nathan.

'Your father’s company already had financial problems. None of this was Serena’s fault. She just happened to handle the documents, so don’t blame her.'

'Today’s launch event is very important to Serena. As long as you don’t come over and cause trouble, I’ll pay for your mother’s surgery. I’ll also find a way to help your father avoid prison.'

'Be good. Wait for me to come home.'

Vivian stared at the screen and read every word.

Suddenly, she wanted to laugh.

In her previous life, Nathan had been willing to die for her.

In this life, he was willing to abandon her completely for Serena.

She wouldn’t be waiting for him to come home.

Vivian didn’t reply.

She deactivated the number, removed the SIM card from her phone, snapped it in half, and dropped the pieces into the trash bag beside her seat.

As the plane lifted into the sky, Vivian looked down through the window.

The lights of Riverton stretched beneath her like a golden sea.

She had spent two lifetimes struggling in that sea.

All the love.

All the hatred.

All the pain she had once believed she would never overcome.

Now, the darkness swallowed it all.

Three months later, Vivian moved into the new apartment Ryan had designed for her.He had drawn every detail himself, weaving in little preferences she had mentioned without even realizing it.The kitchen counters were set at a height she could comfortably reach because she had once complained that the cabinets in her old place were so high she couldn’t reach them even on tiptoe. The bedroom windows faced east because she had said she liked waking up to sunlight. And an entire wall by the entryway was covered with a mirror because she always checked her posture before leaving the house. When Ryan handed her the keys, Vivian walked up to him, rose onto her toes, and kissed his cheek.“That’s the deposit.“If the apartment passes inspection, you’ll get the rest.”Ryan froze for a second. Then he laughed, bent down, and swept her off her feet.Vivian yelped and smacked his shoulder.“Put me down!”“Failed inspection,” he said.“I don’t want the final payment anymore. Vivian looked at him, and her eyes suddenly turned red.She bit her lip and forced back the tears before taking his hand and pulling herself to her feet.“Let’s go.”They had just reached the lobby when hurried footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway.Nathan came running toward them, breathless. His hair was a mess, his shirt wrinkled, as though he had rushed straight out of his apartment. He had noticed Vivian hadn’t come out yet either and had forced his way in through the main entrance. But the building was completely unfamiliar to him.He had spent nearly twenty minutes wandering through the wrong corridors.Nathan stopped several feet away when he saw Vivian standing there unharmed.Vivian glanced at him but said nothing. She simply followed Ryan out the door.Nathan watched the two of them disappear outside. For the first time, he realized that in this city, he could no longer be the first person to find her when something went wrong. When they reached Vi

Nathan had lost a lot of weight. His suit hung loosely from his frame, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and the platinum ring was clenched tightly in his hand.“Vivian.”His voice was so hoarse she could barely hear him.Vivian stopped but didn’t move any closer.“What do you want?”Nathan looked down at the ring in his hand. Then he raised his head, his eyes red.“I was wrong.“Can you give me one more chance?”Vivian looked at him in silence. She remembered that ring. She had chosen it herself. She had personally had their initials engraved inside.Back then, she had truly believed she would marry Nathan. She had believed he would be the man who stayed beside her for the rest of her life.“Nathan,” she finally said, her voice calm and detached. “Keep your apology for yourself.“Go back to Riverton.“Ashburn isn’t the place for you.”With that, she walked past him.Nathan remained frozen where he stood. The ring dug painfully into his palm. When Vivian returned to

The first time Vivian went to physical therapy, the receptionist told her,“Someone has already paid for your treatment.”Vivian asked who.The receptionist pointed to the unnamed account in the system.“It was anonymous.”Vivian fell silent for a moment. She didn’t ask any more questions. That evening, she returned to her apartment, put the groceries she had bought into the refrigerator, and made herself a bowl of noodles. She sat by the window and ate slowly.Halfway through dinner, she happened to glance up.Her gaze landed on the top-floor window of the building across the street. The light was on.The curtains were half open, and she could just make out a figure standing by the window. The distance was too great to see his face. But Vivian knew exactly who it was.Ever since Nathan followed her to Ashburn, he had been living across the street, watching her from a distance every day.Vivian stared for two seconds. Then she set down her bowl and drew the curtains.

The next day, Ryan openly questioned the new investor’s motives during the project meeting.Citing the need to protect the design team’s independence, he proposed an additional clause:The investor would have no authority to interfere with the design team’s decisions, including the construction schedule, choice of materials, or any matters involving the ballet company. The French partners sided with Ryan.Nathan didn’t attend the meeting. When his assistant forwarded him the minutes afterward, he read them and smiled faintly.Ryan was smarter than he had expected. And much more assertive.Nathan didn’t push back.He simply told his assistant to inform the French partners that he respected the design team’s independence and had no intention of interfering with any of their decisions. He had never wanted control over the project. All he wanted was a legitimate reason to stay close to Vivian. Not long after, Ryan asked Nathan to meet him privately.Ryan chose a restaurant nea

Vivian took a step closer to him.Close enough for Nathan to see the red veins in her eyes.“My parents aren’t coming back.“Do you really think I care what you did to Serena? Or how many messages you sent me?“What I care about is that the night my mother died, she was waiting for money for her surgery.“What I care about is that while my father was being taken in for questioning, you were at a launch event with Serena!”Her voice wasn’t loud. But every word cut into Nathan like a knife.“So tell me, Nathan.“How are you ever going to make up for that?”Nathan opened his mouth. Not a single word came out.Vivian looked at him for another two seconds before turning away. She walked around him without looking back.Ryan glanced at Nathan but said nothing. Then he followed Vivian.Nathan remained rooted to the spot, watching her walk farther and farther away. Her light gray coat gradually blurred into the evening until she disappeared around the corner.Nathan lowered h
